  • Fresh ginger rhizomes were heat-treated for 10 min, 30 min, or 60 min using hot air ($40^{\circ}C$, $50^{\circ}C$, or $60^{\circ}C$), and stored in low-density polyethylene (0.04 mm thickness) bags for 2 months at $12{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. We studied the effects of heat pretreatment on changes in gas levels after packaging, and quality characteristics of the rhizomes. Oxygen and carbon dioxide levels progressively fell and rose, respectively, as the temperature of heat treatment rose and the duration of such treatment was extended. The sprouting rate of ginger rhizomes treated at $40^{\circ}C$ was higher than that of other samples. Rotting, softening, and increasing pH of rhizomes were accelerated by treatment at higher temperature for a longer time. Weight loss and soluble solid levels were not affected by heat treatment. Sensory qualities such as appearance, odor, and overall acceptability of rhizomes fell with treatment at a higher temperature for a longer time. These results suggest that heat pretreatment has a detrimental effect on the quality of fresh ginger rhizomes.

  • The phase stability of tetragonal phase in Y-TZP was investigated in terms of the distribution of grain sizes and heat-treating atmosphere. Y-TZP with various grain sizes were prepared using duration time at $1600^{\circ}C$ as experimental parameter. Accumulated grain size distributions were built from the SEM micrographs and the amount of tetragonal phase were measured using XRD. Both results were compared to determine the critical grain size before and after heat-treatment in vacuum. The critical grain size drastically decreased compared with the small increase of average grain size due to the autocatalytic effect which critically affects the tetragonal to monoclinic phase transformation. After heat-treatment in reductive atmosphere critical grain size relatively increased due to the stabilization of tetragonal phase. The formation of oxygen vacancies during heat-treatment was ascribed to the increase of stability.

  • LaNiO$_3$(LNO) thin films on (100) Si substrates are prepared by sol-gel method on heat treatment conditions, such as heat transfer direction, pyrolysis and annealing process, and annealing temperatures and times. The effect of heat treatment conditions on the (100) orientations, structures and resistances of the thin films are investigated by XRD, SEM(FESEM), and a lout probe method. Highly (100) orientation factor(0.97), a pseudocubic crystalline structure with a dense and uniform microstructure could be formed by the following conditions: 1) the heat transfer direction is from Si substrate to LNO, 2) the pyrolysis and annealing process are alternated, 3) the annealing temperature is $650^{\circ}C$ and 4) the annealing times is 3 minutes. The sheet resistance of thin films decreased with increasing of a annealing temperature and time, and a number of coating.

  • Changes in microstructure and damping capacity with aging time for solutionized Mg-Al alloy have been investigated. Discontinuous ${\beta}\;(Mg_{17}Al_{12})$ precipitates form along the primary grain boundaries, the amount of which increases as the aging time increases. The hardness of the matrix with respect to aging time shows a typical "S" shape, indicating a generation of fine continuous precipitates in the matrix during the aging. The peak level of damping capacity is obtained after 1 hour of aging, over which the damping capacity becomes deteriorated continuously. The formation of optimum density of continuous ${\beta}$ precipitates with fine morphology which would act as pinning points for dislocation lines, might be responsible for the improvement of damping capacity.

  • The interfacial phenomena between intermetallic compounds and Al matrix have been studied at $680^{\circ}C$ for various holding time under argon atmosphere. Model experiments were performed using Fe, Ni and Ti wire to observe the interfacial phenomena. The interfacial phenomena between intermetallic compounds and Al matrix were analysed by optical microscope, SEM and EDX. The results of EDX and XRD showed that the interfacial zones of intermetallic compounds/Al matrix were composed of several intermetallic layers. The reaction layer was varied with holding time and heating temperature. The investigation of interfacial zones in the specimen as a function of heat treatment time at $680^{\circ}C$ indicated that the best heat treatment condition for squeeze casting was $680^{\circ}C$ for 5min.

  • The effect of austenitizing temperature and time on the processing window of 3.60wt%C - 2.50wt%Si - 0.80wt%Cu ductile cast iron and that of the amount of copper added were investigated. The second stage reaction at 400oC was retarded with increased austenitizing temperature. The widest processing window was obtained at the lower austempering temperature with the increased time at the same austenitizing temperature. The width of the widest processing window was decreased with the increase of time at the same austenitizing temperature. The width of processing window was increased with the increased amount of copper added.

  • This study presents a real-time method that uses Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (LAS) to measure exhaust gas temperatures in turbulent flow fields. It was possible to measure temperature by passing a laser beam through the exhaust gas in a grid pattern, and obtain a temperature distribution image through time series analysis at 0.1 second intervals. Temperature image resolution has been improved with CT reconstruction algorithms. Estimating maximum temperature values and locations enabled 2D temperature analysis, surpassing single-point methods like thermocouples. The accuracy of LAS measurements was evaluated by comparison with thermocouple measurements. This approach will contribute to automotive technology and environmental protection by providing reliable temperature data for interpreting turbulent temperature distributions.

  • In order to study the interfacial reaction between Nb thin sheet and Fe-C-(Si) alloy with different Chemical compositions, they were cast-bonded. The growth of carbide layer formed at the interface after isothermal heat treatment at 1173K, 1223K, 1273K and 1323K for various times was investigated. The carbide formed at the interface was NbC and the thickness of NbC layer was increased linearly in proportional to the heat treating time. Therefore, It was found that the growth of NbC layer was controlled by the interfacial reaction. The growth rate constant of NbC layer was slightly increased with increase of carbon content when the silicon content is similar in the cast irons. However, as silicon content increases with no great difference in carbon content, the growth of NbC layer was greatly retarded. The calculated activation energy for the growth of NbC layer was varied in the range of 447.4~549.3 kJ/moI with the compositions of cast irons.

  • The degradation of mechanical properties in the high nitrogen steel HN3 developed for nuclear fusion reactor has been evaluated quantitatively using the small punch(SP) test, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis has also been conducted to identify carbides or nitrides precipitated on grain boundaries of the heat treated samples. Mechanical properties of the steel HN3 significantly decreased with increasing heat treatment time and temperature or with decreasing testing temperature. Combination of XRD and metallurgical observation, revealed that the material degradation in the thermally aged steel was caused by precipitation of carbides on the grain boundaries. While the weld metal showed the lowest mechanical properties among various microstructures in GTA weldments. By combining SP test and XRD analysis, cryogenic fracture behaviors and aging degradation for high nitrogen steel could be successfully evaluated in nondestructive manner.

  • The effects of eight types of spheroidizing annealing conditions including annealing temperature, annealing time, cooling rate, and furnace atmosphere on the microstructure and hardeness were determined in SCM440 steel which has been widely used for automotive parts. The well-spheroidized structure and minimum hardness were obtained when the steel was heat-treated at $770^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours, cooled to $720^{\circ}C$ at a cooling rate of $24^{\circ}C/h$, and then kept for 7 hours at the $720^{\circ}C$ followed by air cooling. In order to increase the productivity and to save the manufacturing cost, it is desirable to apply a faster cooling rate to the spheroidizing annealing. It was found that a cooling rate of $100^{\circ}C/hr$ was the fastest cooling rate applicable to the SCM440 steel among the four cooling rates used in this study. The microstructure consisted of ferrite and very fine spheroidized cementite when the steel was annealed for 13 hours at $720^{\circ}C$ below $A_{C1}$ temperature. This was caused by the short annealing time and the retarding effect of Cr and Mo on both the dissolution of pearlite to cementite and coarsening of spheroidized cementite. The steel heat treated in air showed the decarburized layer of about $125{\mu}m$ in thickness at the surface.
