  • Manganese dioxide ($MnO_2$) is one of the most important cathode materials used in both aqueous and non-aqueous batteries. The $MnO_2$ polymorph that is used for lithium primary batteries is synthesized either by electrolytic (EMD-$MnO_2$) or chemical methods (CMD-$MnO_2$). Commonly, electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) is used as a cathode mixture material for dry-cell batteries, such as a alkaline batteries, zinc-carbon batteries, rechargeable alkaline batteries, etc. The characteristics of lithium/manganese-dioxide primary cells fabricated with EMD-$MnO_2$ powders as cathode were compared as a function of the parameters of a manufacturing process. The flexible primary cells were prepared with EMD-$MnO_2$, active carbon, and poly vinylidene fluoride (PVDF) binder (10 wt.%) coated on an Al foil substrate. A cathode sheet with micro-porous showed a higher discharge capacity than a cathode sheet compacted by a press process. As the amount of EMD-$MnO_2$ increased, the electrical conductivity decreased and the electrical capacity increased. The cell subjected to heat-treatment at $200^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr showed a high discharge capacity. The flexible primary cell made using the optimum conditions showed a capacity and an average voltage of 220 mAh/g and 2.8 V, respectively, at $437.5{\mu}A$.

  • Electrical properties of the laminated SMD-type PTC thermistor for microcircuit protection were investigated as a function of calcination and sintering temperature. $BaTiO_3$ with $Y_2O_3$ and $MnO_2$ were calcined at 1000 to $1150^{\circ}C$ for 2h and the laminated SMD-type PTC thermistor was sintered at 1350 to $1400^{\circ}C$ for 2h in a reduced atmosphere (1% $H_2/N_2$). Sintered density of the sample was dependent on the calcination and sintering temperature. Electrical properties of the sintered samples were strongly dependent on the densities of samples. For the samples with density below 4.6 g/$cm^3$, the insulator characteristics were observed, while PTC jump characteristics (R150/R30) were disappeared for the sample with density above 5.05 g/$m^3$. Optimal PTC characteristics were obtained for the sintered samples with density of 5.05 g/$m^3$. The laminated SMD-type PTC thermistor prepared by calcination at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 2h and sintering at $1270^{\circ}C$ for 2h showed the room temperature resistivity of $11{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ and PTC jump characteristics of $10^2$ order.

  • The effects of utilizing evaporative cooling system equipped with tunnel ventilation on postpartum ovarian activities, energy balance and milk production of early lactating dairy cows under hot and humid climates were studied from parturition to 22 wk postpartum. Thirty-four crossbred Holstein-Friesian (93.75% HF$\times$.25% Bos indicus) primiparous cows were randomly assigned to one of two groups. Cooled cows (n = 17; treatment) were housed in the tunnel ventilated barn equipped with evaporative cooling system and uncooled (n = 17; control) were housed in the naturally ventilated barn without supplemental cooling system. Cooled cows had greater (p<0.05) dry matter intake and milk production than uncooled cows. Days to the energy balance (EB) nadir did not differ between groups. However, days to equilibrium EB for uncooled cows was longer (p<0.05) than for cooled cows. There was no significant difference in postpartum anovular condition between cooled and uncooled cows. The interval from parturition to first postpartum ovulation did not differ between groups ($31.4{\pm}4.3$ and $26.1{\pm}3.6$ day, respectively). These results suggest that the evaporative cooling and tunnel ventilation has the potential to decrease the severity of heat stress and improve both milk production and metabolic efficiency during early lactation without affecting reproductive function in dairy cows under hot and humid climates.

  • In this study, we synthesized Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) in polyacrylonitrile (PAN) thin films using a simple annealing process in the solid phase. The synthetic conditions were systematically controlled and optimized by varying the concentration of the Au salt solution and the annealing temperature. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed their chemical state, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) verified the successful synthesis, size, and density of AuNPs. Au nanoparticles were generated from the thermal decomposition of the Au salt and stabilized during the cyclization of the PAN matrix. For actual device applications, previous synthetic techniques have required the synthesis of AuNPs in a liquid phase and an additional process to form the thin film layer, such as spin-coating, dip-coating, Langmuir-Blodgett, or high vacuum deposition. In contrast, our one-step synthesis could produce gold nanoparticles from the Au salt contained in a solid matrix with an easy heat treatment. The PAN:AuNPs composite was used as the charge trap layer of an organic nano-floating gate memory (ONFGM). The memory devices exhibited a high on/off ratio (over $10^6$), large hysteresis windows (76.7 V), and a stable endurance performance (>3000 cycles), indicating that our stabilized PAN:AuNPs composite film is a potential charge trap medium for next generation organic nano-floating gate memory transistors.

  • The structural transformation behavior of $Na_2Ti_3O_7$ by hydrolysis was investigated in mild and strong acidic aqueous medium. Compared with $K_2Ti_4O_9,\;Na_2Ti_3O_7$ exhibits quite different structural and morphological transformation behavior despite their similar layered structural characteristics. $TiO_2(B)$ obtained by heat treatment of $H_2Ti_3O_7\;at\;350^{\circ}C$ transforms to rutile $H_2Ti_3O_7\;at\;900^{\circ}C$. This temperature is much lower than $1200{\circ}C$, the temperature for anatase to rutile transition when $K_2Ti_4O_9$ is used as a starting titanate. A rectangular rod shape and size of $TiO_2(B)$ particles obtained from $Na_2Ti_3O_7$ is also different from a fibrous structure of $TiO_2(B)$ prepared using $K_2Ti_4O_9$. Rutile crystals of 100 nm diameter with a corn-like morphology and large surface area are directly obtained when the hydrolysis of $Na_2Ti_3O_7$ is carried out at $100^{\circ}C$ in a strong acid solution. The structure of starting titanates and the hydrolysis conditions are an important factor to decide the particle size and morphology of $TiO_2(B)\;and\;TiO_2$.

  • Super duplex stainless steels (sDSS) are excellent for use under severely corrosive conditions such as offshore and marine applications like pipelines and flanges. sDSS has better mechanical properties and corrosion resistance than the standard duplex stainless steel (DSS) but it is easier for a sigma phase to appear, which depresses the mechanical property and corrosion resistance, compared to DSS, because sDSS has a higher alloy element than DSS. In addition, sDSS has a feeble ductile-brittle transition temperature (DBTT) because it has a 50% ferrite microstructure. In the actual operating environment, sDSS would be thermally affected by welding and a sub-zero temperature environment. This study analyzed how precipitated sDSS behaves at a sub-zero temperature through annealing heat treatment and a sub-zero tensile test. Six types of specimens with annealing times of up to 60 min were tested in a sub-zero chamber. According to the experimental results, an increase in the annealing time reduced the elongation of sDSS, and a decrease in the tensile test temperature raises the flow stress and tensile stress. In particular, the elongation of specimens annealed for 15 min and 30 min was clearly lowered with a decrease in the tensile test temperature because of the increasing sigma phase fraction ratio.

  • To investigate the possibility of the $ZrO_2$ buffer layer as the insulator for the Metal-Ferroelectric-Insulator-semiconductor (MFIS) structure, $ZrO_2$ and $SrBi_2Ta_2O_9$ (SBT) thin films were deposited on the P-type Si(111) wafer by the R.F. magnetron-sputtering method. According to the process with and without the post-annealing of the $ZrO_2$ buffer layer and SBT thin film, the diffusion amount of Sr, Bi, Ta elements show slight difference through the Glow Discharge Spectrometer (GDS) analysis. From X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) results, we could confirm that the post-annealing process affects the chemical binding condition of the interface between the $ZrO_2$ thin film and the Si substrate. Compared to the MFIS structure without the post-annealing of the $ZrO_2$ buffer layer, memory window value of MFlS structure with post-annealing of the $ZrO_2$ buffer layer were considerably improved. The window memory of the Pt/SBT (260 nm, $800^{\circ}C)/ZrO_2$ (20 nm) structure increases from 0.75 to 2.2 V under the applied voltage of 9 V after post-annealing.

  • Spinnable pitches and carbon fibers were successfully prepared from petroleum or coal pyrolysis residues. After pyrolysis fuel oil (PFO), slurry oil, and coal tar were simply filtered to eliminate the solid impurities, the characteristics of the raw materials were evaluated by elemental analysis, 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MALDI-TOF-MS), and so on. Spinnable pitches were prepared for melt-spinning carbon fiber through a simple distillation under strong nitrogen flow, and further vacuum distillation to obtain a high softening point. Carbon fibers were produced from the above pitches by single-hole melt spinning and additional heat treatment, for oxidization and carbonization. Even though spinnable pitches and carbon fibers were processed under the same conditions, the melt-spinning and properties of the carbon fiber were different depending on the raw materials. A fine carbon fiber could not be prepared from slurry oil, and the different diameter carbon fibers were produced from the PFO and coal tar pitch. These results seem to be closely correlated with the initial characteristics of the raw materials, under this simple processing condition.

  • A cDNA clone for a transcript preferentially expressed during an early phase of flooding was isolated from Nicotiana tabacum. Nucleotide sequencing of the cDNA clone identified an open reading frame that has high homology to the previously reported glycine-rich RNA-binding proteins. The open reading frame consists of 157 amino acids with an N-terminal RNA-recognition motif and a C-terminal glycine-rich domain, and thus the cDNA clone was designated as Nicotiana tabaccum glycine-rich RNA-binding protein-1 (NtGRP1). Expression of NtGRP1 was upregulated under flooding stress and also increased, but at much lower levels, under conditions of cold, drought, heat, high salt content, and abscisic acid treatment. RNA homopolymer-binding assay showed that NtGRP1 binds to all the RNA homopolymers tested with a higher affinity to poly r(G) and poly r(A) than to poly r(U) and poly r(C). Nucleic acid-binding assays showed that NtGRP1 binds to ssDNA, dsDNA, and mRNA. NtGRP1 suppressed expression of the fire luciferase gene in vitro, and the suppression of luciferase gene expression could be rescued by addition of oligonucleotides. Collectively, the data suggest NtGRP1 as a negative modulator of gene expression by binding to DNA or RNA in bulk that could be advantageous for plants in a stress condition like flooding.
