Dissimilar friction welding were produced using 15(mm) diameter solid bar in chrome molybedenum steel(KS SCM440) to carbon steel(KS S45C) to investigate their mechanical properties. The main friction welding parameters were selected to endure good quality welds on the basis of visual examination, tensile tests, Vickers hardness surveys of the bond of area and H.A.Z and microstructure investigations. The specimens were tested as-welded and post-weld heat treated(PWHT). The tensile strength of the friction welded steel bars was increased up to 100% of the S45C base metal under the condition of all heating time. Optimal welding conditions were n=2,000(rpm), $P_1=60(MPa),\;P_2=100(MPa),\;t_1=4(s),\;t_2=5(s)$ when the total upset length is 5.4 and 5.7(mm), respectively. The peak of hardness distribution of the friction welded joints can be eliminated by PWHT. Two different kinds of materials are strongly mixed to show a well-combined structure of macro-particles without any molten material and particle growth or any defects.
It has been reported that copper and copper alloys have a large anisotropy of functional properties such as electrical, thermal and mechanical properties, which means that the texture of polycrystalline alloy should be considered to achieve better properties. In this study, the determination of grain growth orientation and texture formation in the cold-rolled, heat-treated and Ni-plated hybrid copper sheets was investigated. Grain growth direction and texture formation were analyzed by the X-ray pole figure. The influence of texture on the mechanical properties could be quantitatively confirmed by the results from the orientation distribution function and the tensile test. The heat-treated texture in the cold-rolled hybrid copper sheet is also investigated and discussed.

The strength level of welded joint in room temperature and elevated temperature up to $600^{\circ}C$ was investigated in 250 and 300 grade 18% Ni maraging steel sheet welded with electron beam. The results obtained in this study are as follows; 1. Optimum welding heat input was 600J/cm in 1.0mm thickness and the room temperature tensile strength, joint efficiency of welded joint treated with optimum aging condition were found to be about 166kg/$mm^2$, 95% in 250 grade, 189kg/$mm^2$, 92% in 300 grade maraging steel sheet, respectively. 2. Tensile strength of welded joint in room temperature increased slightly by aging after repeated solution heat treatment, but the fracture mode showed a shear. 3. Joint efficiency at a temperature between $540^{\circ}C$and $600^{\circ}C$ found to be about 72% to 55%, but the joint efficiency exceeded about 90% below $300^{\circ}C$. 4. The fracture occurred in most weld metal, and the fracture surface showed a shallow dimple.

In mechanical testing of W-Ni-Pe heavy alloys, the cracks nucleate at W/W interface and propagate through W/ Imatrix interface or through matrix phase together with the cleavage of W grains. The mechanical properties can therefore be improved by control of the interfacial strength and area. In this presentation, some experimental result and techniques on this subject will be reviewed and discussed. The hydrogen embrittlement caused by the hydrogen segregation at interfaces during sintering in an hydrogen atmosphere can be removed by an heat-treattnent in vacuum or in an inert atmosphere. The heat-treatment condition can be estimated by using a diffusion equation for a cylindrical shape. The mechanical properties, in particular the impact property, are degraded by the segregation of non-metallic impurities, such as Sand P. The degradation can be prevented by adding a fourth element, such as La or Ca, active with the non-metallic impurities. The cyclic heat-treatment at usual heat-treattnent tempemture causes the penetration of matrix between W/W grain boundaries and results in remarkable increase in impact energy. This is due to an increase in the area of ductile failure during the impact test. The instability of W/matrix interface casued by addition of Mo or Re can be controlled by using W powders of different size. The increase in the interfacial area in found to be related to the presence of non-equilibrium pure W gmins among W(Mo or Re) solid solution gmins.
The interfacial bond strengh and microstructural analysis of pre-heat treated porcelain-fusedmetal(PFM) were investigated using a mechanical three-point bending tester and scanning electron microscope(SEM). Four kinds of heat treated samples were prepared as follows ; A: Heating $1200^{\circ}F{\to}1600^{\circ}F$, holding 1min, reheating ${\to}1850^{\circ}F$, hold 3min under vacuum, B: heating $1200^{\circ}F{\to}1600^{\circ}F$, holding 1min, reheating${\to}1850^{\circ}F$ under vacuum conditon, C: heating $1200^{\circ}F{\to}1600^{\circ}F$, holding 1min, reheating${\to}1850^{\circ}F$, holding 3min in the air, repeat same heat treatment process under vacuum condition, D: heating $1200^{\circ}F{\to}1600^{\circ}F$, holding 1min, reheating${\to}1850^{\circ}F$, holding 1min in the air. The three-point bening test result shows that the interfacial bond strength of specimen B and C were higher than that of A and D. The SEM study indicate that Specimen C shows the highest surface density.

In this study, the cell-wall microstructure and anti-swelling effectiveness (ASE) of heat-treated larch wood were evaluated and the correlation between them was analyzed. For this purpose, some larch lumbers were heat-treated for 12, 18, and 24 hours at temperatures of 190℃ and 220℃. By observing the scanning electron microscopy cross-sectional image of the heat-treated larch, it was confirmed that the shape of heat-treated wood cell changed, the cut-section of the wood cell wall was rough, and the intercellular space has become wide as the intercellular bonds had broken because of heat-treatment. In addition, the evaluation of the swelling for each treatment condition revealed that, as the heat-treatment temperature and duration increased, the amount of absorbed water and swelling decreased and the ASE increased. The decrease in the amount of absorbed water is thought to be affected by the chemical change in the cell wall by heat-treatment. On the contrary, the decrease in the swelling and the increase in the ASE are thought to be due to a combination of chemical changes and physical changes such as structural changes in the cell wall.
Thin copper films were grown by electrodeposition on copper seed layers which were grown by sputtering of an ultra-pure copper target on tantalum nitride-coated silicon wafers and subsequently, cleaned in ECR plasma. The copper films were then subjected to ⅰ) vacuum annealing, ⅱ) rapid thermal annealing (RTA) and ⅲ) rapid thermal nitriding (RTN) at various temperatures over different periods of time. XRD, SEM, AFM and resistivity measurements were done to ascertain the optimum heat treatment condition for obtaining film with minimum resistivity, predominantly (111)-oriented and smoother surface morphology. The as-deposited film has a resistivity of ∼6.3 $\mu$$\Omega$-cm and a relatively small intensity ratio of (111) and (200) peaks. With heat treatment, the resistivity decreases and the (111) peak becomes dominant, along with improved smoothness of the copper film. The optimum condition (with a resistivity of 1.98 $\mu$$\Omega$-cm) is suggested as the rapid thermal nitriding at 400oC for 120 sec.
Nano porous, transparent silica aerogels monoliths were prepared under ambient drying (1 atm, $270^{\circ}C$) condition by the combination of sol-gel process and surface modification with subsequent heat treatment. Three kinds of solvent, n-hexane, n-heptane and xylene, were selected in the point view of low surface tension and vapor pressure in order to restrain a formation of cracks during drying. Crack-free silica aerogels with over 93 % of porosity and below $0.14g/cm^3$ of density were obtained by solvent exchange and surface modification under atmosphere condition. Optimum solvent was confirmed n-heptane among these solvents through estimation of FT-IR, TGA, BET and SEM. Modified silica aerogel exhibited a higher porosity and pore size compare to unmodified aerogels. Hydrophobicity was also controled by C-H and H-OH bonding state in the gel structure and heat treatment over $400^{\circ}C$ effects to the hydrophobicity due to oxidation of C-H radicals.
Evaluation of long term stability of the Brinell standard hardness tester was carried out to secure its application as a national standard in Brinell hardness. Accuracy and repeatability in load application were tested through evaluating errors in hardness measurement of certified reference blocks. All of those requirements in KS as well as ISO specifications were satisfied by this standard hardness tester. In addition to this, long term stability test of automatic indentation measurement system was carried out. The scattering range was almost the same with its error range. To figure out an optimum test condition for better repeatability and long term stability, the effect of load variation, load application speed and time have been studied using orthogonal array experimental plan. It was found that the best combination is $30{\mu}m/s$ of load application speed and 25 seconds of load application time.
In this study, friction-wear test was carried out on the carburized layer depth of a mechanical structure steel SNCM carburized with RX and LPG for 7hrs at $930^{\circ}C$ and also the wear properties of wear loss, wear rate, coefficient of friction, friction force and friction temperature were investigated. The wear properties for carburized layer of SNCM were tested on dry condition at the room temperature by the thrust load of 49~245N range at sliding speed of 0.2m/sec and the sliding speed of 0.2~1.0m/sec range at thrust load of 98N. Wear loss on the depth of carburizing layer was increased with increasing of thrust load and sliding speed, and with decreasing of hardness. The condition of worn surfaces were showed mild wear at less than the thrust load of 98N and sliding speed of 0.6m/sec but were showed severe wear at more than 98N and 0.6m/sec. The friction load and temperature were increased with increasing of thrust load but with increasing sliding speed was appeared minimum at 0.6m/sec. With increasing thrust load the wear rate was increased and the coefficient of friction was decreased, but with increasing sliding speed the wear rate and the coefficient of friction were decreased in 0.2~0.6m/sec and increased in 0.6~1.0m/sec, therefore 0.6m/sec in this testing is a transition velocity.
