  • This paper is a study of the eddy current brake designed to replace the air brake of railway application. The eddy current brake has the advantage of being able to take a high current density compared to the other application because this brake is used for applying brakes to the rolling stock for a shorter amount of time. Also, this braking system has the merit of being able to take a high current density at low speed rather than at high speed, because the heat generated by the low speed operation is less than that of the high speed operation. This paper also presents a method of improving the output torque of the eddy current brake at low speed operation through a change of the winding as well as the basic design.

  • The objective of IM rocket motor is to minimize the probability of inadvertent initiation and severity of subsequent collateral damage, hence it is important to define personnel and equipment survivability to a rocket motor accident. The violent response probability associated with shock, impact and thermal effects be minimized. And during production, transportation/storage and stack of rocket motor, sympathetic detonation, giving severe effects of the propagation of adverse reaction on its surroundings, be reduced. Hence Reaction type also based on reaction results of the overpressure, fragment throw and heat flux.

  • This study attempted to investigate the value of photoelectric sensors in terms of a defrost-control method. Tests were conducted in a calorimeter room under the heating with the defrost-performance test conditions described in KS C 9306. Accordingly, the photoelectric technology is a competitive defrost-control method that can precisely control the operational defrost cycle using the output voltages that are proportional to the frost height. The heating period is gradually reduced because the complex defrost-control method, for which the sensors initiate the defrosting process and the defrosting process is terminated by the time parameter, could not adjust the net defrosting time by itself. Therefore, a complex defrost-control method, for which the photoelectric sensors start the defrosting process and it is terminated by the temperature parameter, is preferred because of the adjustment of the net defrosting time. Regardless of the defrost-control method, the first defrosting cycle is activated earlier than the times that are determined in the second and third cycles and so on, because the first operation cycle can decide the characteristics of the subsequent cycle.

  • In the current paper, a generalization of the results of Zhao et al. (2008) on a new design of C/C composite multidisc brake system is presented. The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of thermal sensitivity of Carbon/Carbon (C/C) composite material on the temperature distributions, deformation, and stress during braking. In this regard, a transient temperature-displacement coupled analysis for C/C composite brake discs with frictional heat generation under simulated operating conditions is performed. An axisymmetric model for brake system is used for the finite element analysis according to the theory of energy transformation and transportation. The transient temperature distributions on the friction surfaces, deformation, and stress are obtained. To check the validity, the results are corroborated with other solutions available in the literature, wherever possible. The current study could be used as a guide in the initial design of a high performance multidisc brake system.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate probiotic effects of two Lactobacillus plantarum strains (GBL16 and 17) isolated from black raspberry. Results revealed that the number of GBL16 was gradually decreased as bile salt concentration was increased from 0.3 to 1%. However, GBL17 did not show any difference when GBL17 was applied to 1% bile salt, and it indicates that GBL17 is more tolerant to bile salt than GBL16. GBL17 exhibited higher heat resistance and adhesion ability to Caco-2 cells than GBL16. Regarding gut microbiome, no significant change in the number of total bacteria in intestines of mice after treatment with GBLs was determined. However, the combination of GBL16 and GBL17 significantly increased the number of total bacteria in intestines of mice after they were orally administered. Therefore, the results suggest that both GBL16 and 17 strains could be one of major probiotics that can improve human gut health.

  • Modern people spend more and more time in an automobile in their daily life. In this life, drivers and passengers should create HVAC environment in the automobile interior which is not only for convenient transportation but also give comfortable feeling with dwelling culture. Also, the latest cars give much importance for the role of HVAC system that controls the environment of the area for passengers more than just basic capability. There are solar radiant heat, surface temperature, refrigeration system(temperature, humidity, air current, velocity), and dust for the factor which have an effect on the HVAC environment in the automobile interior, also these are being carried for the HVAC environment delivered an individual character. In this study, we drew the automobile interior as three dimension and arranged a method of numerical analysis on HVAC environment in the automobile interior displaying air current distribution and temperature distribution through simulation of the automobile interior on the ventilation volume and outlet area. The aim of this study is to develop the estimated method for HVAC environment. in the automobile interior.

  • This study aims to understand abnormal climate caused by impacts of climate change and to suggest the direction of urban planning focusing on adaptation to climate change. The study consists of theory consideration and case study(Chicago, Philadelphia, Seattle). As a result, the main impacts of climate change faced by urban areas are heat wave, precipitation, and drought. To prevent these impacts, it is important to prepare methods of urban planning as followings: planning for land use, park and green considering the climate patterns, establishing and managing water resources systems similar to the nature, securing renewable energy resources, and transportation facilities and exterior space with proof against climate. It is especially necessary to introduce infrastructures related to storm water, green roof, shading tree planting, green space, and permeable pavement. Finally, in order to realize urban planning for adaptation to climate change, it is needed to make the detailed and specific goal and strategy for the climate change adaptation plan and to extend the scope from the goals to an action plan, a detailed plan, and a design guideline.

  • Liquid and solid fuels currently in use have various pros and cons. As a result, researches are dedicated to produce a new form of fuel that utilizes the advantages and overcomes weakness of conventional fuels. In the present study, a new method for making solidified ethanol fuel is introduced, and its preliminary properties and combustion characteristic are observed. The solidified ethanol fuel was made through the production of agarose hydrogel, and its subsequent soaking into pure ethanol. The properties of the solidified ethanol fuel were quantitatively and qualitatively observed, and its validity and applicability discussed.

  • The purpose of this paper is to find the fire-protection method for keeping on the bond capacity of Near-Surface-Mounted (NSM) FRP under high temperature. Experiments have been carried out to evaluate the bond capacity of NSM FRP by using CFRP-plates and to confirm the heat transfer to the concrete block when the refractory insulation is attached to the surface of NSM FRP. Bond test of NSM FRP under room temperature was conducted to obtain the maximum bond strength. And then a heating tests were carried out with keeping the bond stress of 30% of the maximum bond strength. As a result, the bond capacity of NSM FRP was disappeared when the temperature at epoxy reached to its glass transition temperature (GTT). In order to secure the bond capacity of the NSM FRP, it is necessary to protect the front as well as side by using insulation materials.

  • In this study, the dielectric properties of flame retardant silicone rubber mixed with the amount of silica 50~65 phr were measured at frequencies ranging from 1 to 2.7 MHz and temperature ranges from 30℃ to 160℃. The permittivity decreased with higher frequencies and higher temperatures, and tanδ are thought to have decreased due to the increased heat oxidation of the methyl group bound to Si, which increased the hardness of silicone rubber. FT-IR analysis of specimen mixed with SiO2 of 50~65 phr showed oscillations of OH groups bound to SiO2 between wavenumber 3,600 and 3,300. As a result of analyzing surface components by Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) on all specimens mixed with SiO2 of 50 to 65 phr, all specimens contained Si, and the analysis by field emission scanning electron (FE-SEM) confirmed that about 1~5 ㎛ particles were distributed regularly on the surface of the specimens.
