  • The two-thermocouple method was investigated experimentally to evaluate its accuracy for the measurement of local wall temperature and heat flux on a heat transfer tube with an electric heater rod installed in an annulus channel. This work revealed that a thermocouple flush-mounted in a surface groove serves as a good reference method for the accurate measurement of the wall temperature, whereas two thermocouples installed at different depths in the tube wall yield large bias errors in the calculation of local heat flux and wall temperature. These errors result from conductive and convective changes due to the fin effect of the thermocouple sheath. To eliminate the bias errors, we proposed a calibration method based on both the local heat flux and Reynolds number of the cooling water. The calibration method was validated with the measurement of local heat flux and wall temperature against experimental data obtained for single-phase convection and two-phase condensation flows inside the tube. In the manuscript, Section 1 introduces the importance of local heat flux and wall temperature measurement, Section 2 explains the experimental setup, and Section 3 provides the measured data, causes of measurement errors, and the developed calibration method.

  • In this paper, an experimental study was conducted on the energy efficiency ratio of performance for air source heat pump. The energy efficiency ratio presents the operating efficiency of heat pump performance. In order to improve reliability in the energy efficiency ratio test of air source heat pump, the measurement uncertainty of the instrument was estimated. Measurement uncertainty refers to the uncertainty of a measurement, estimates the range in which the expected value of the measurement can be within a certain confidence level, and suggests a range in which the measured representative value is incorrect. The measurement uncertainty for the energy efficiency ratio test of air source heat pump was calculated and the measured results were presented.

  • This paper presents a experimental study on the performance of the heat pump. Uncertainty of measurement means the degree of uncertainty in the measurement. Therefore, it estimates a section where expected value of the measurement might be within a certain confidence level and suggests a range where measured representative value might be incorrect. Uncertainty of measurement is a parameter that shows characteristics of dispersion of measured value that was reasonably estimated from measured quantity. Measurement result of performance experiment is not a true value but estimated value that was estimated reasonably. Therefore, uncertainty of measurement needs to be calculated and presented with the result of measurement.

  • A study on the measurement of critical heat flux using the transient inverse heat conduction method in spray cooling was performed. The inverse heat conduction method estimates the surface heat flux or temperature using a measured interior temperature history. The effects of the measuring time interval and location of temperature measurement on the measurement of critical heat flux were primarily investigated. The following results were obtained. The estimated critical heat flux decreased as the time interval of temperature measurement increased. Meanwhile, the effect of measurement location on critical heat flux was not significant. It was also found, from the experimental results, that the critical superheat increased as the measurement location of thermocouple neared the heat transfer surface.

  • Recently, energy recovery ventilators (ERVs) have been installed for energy saving in many multi-residential buildings in Korea. The performance of the heat exchanger of an ERV is analyzed in this study under specific indoor and outdoor conditions in a test-cell measurement. However, the performance of the heat exchanger varies according to the indoor and outdoor condition. In this study, the performance of energy recovery of the ventilation system was therefore analyzed in actual weather conditions using field measurement. Experiments were conducted under winter conditions in a multi-residential building for 20 days. Based on the measurement results, the characteristics of sensible heat and latent heat exchange rates were analyzed.

  • The demand on quantitative measurement of the heat flux is motivated in making higher-quality steel product through a water quenching process of plate mill. To improve a spatial degree of heat flux measurement, the multi-point heat flux measurement was carried out by a unique experimental technique that has a combination of the existing single-point heat flux gauge. The corresponding heat flux can be easily determined by Fourier's law in a conventional way. The multi-point heat flux gauge developed in this study can be applicable to measure the surface heat flux, the surface heat transfer coefficient during a water quenching applications of steelmaking process. The results exhibit different heat transfer regimes; such as single-phase forced convection, nucleate boiling, and film boiling, that are occurred in close proximity on the multi-point heat flux gauge quenched by water impinging jet.

  • To improve the mean-life and the reliability of power cable, we have investigated specific heat (Cp) and thermal conductivity of XLPE insulator and semiconducting materials in 154[kV] underground power transmission cable. Specimens were made of sheet form with the seven of specimens for measurement. Specific heat (Cp) and thermal conductivity were measured by DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) and Nano Flash Diffusivity. Specific-heat measurement temperature ranges of XLPE insulator were from $20[^{\circ}C]\;to\;90[^{\circ}C]$, and the heating rate was $1[^{\circ}C/min]$. And the measurement temperatures of thermal conductivity were $25[^{\circ}C],\;55[^{\circ}C]\;and\;90[^{\circ}C]$. In case of semiconducting materials, the measurement temperature ranges of specific heat were from $20[^{\circ}C]\;to\;60[^{\circ}C]$, and the heating rate was $1[^{\circ}C/min]$. And the measurement temperatures of thermal conductivity were $25[^{\circ}C]\;and\;55[^{\circ}]C$. From these experimental results both specific heat and thermal conductivity were increased by heating rate because volume of materials was expanded according to rise in temperature. We could know that a small amount of CNT has a excellent thermal properties.

  • This paper proposes a new measurement method to improve the shortcomings of an existing integral method for measuring heat flux in plug-type heat flux gauges in the high-temperature and high-pressure environments of liquid-rocket combustors. Using the existing integral measurement method, the calculation of the surface area for the heat flux in the gauge exhibits error in relation to the actual surface area. To solve this problem, transient profiles obtained from ANSYS Fluent were used to calculate unsteady heat flux as it adjusted to the measured temperature. First, a heat flux gauge was designed and manufactured specifically for use in the high-temperature and high-pressure conditions that are similar to those of liquid rocket combustors. A calibration test was performed to prove the reliability of the manufactured gauge. Then, a combustion experiment was conducted, in which the gauge was used to measure unsteady heat flux in a liquid rocket combustor that used kerosene and liquid oxygen as propellants. Reasonable heat flux values were obtained using the gauge. Therefore, the proposed measurement method is considered to offer significant improvement over the existing integral method.

  • Averaged heat transfer coefficients in the trailing edge model of a turbine blade with double impingements were measured using transient liquid crystals technique and conventional copper plate-thermocouple technique. The detailed distributions of heat transfer coefficients by transient liquid crystals technique were also presented. Results showed that increased heat transfer coefficient due to the inpingements and the averaged heat transfer coefficients increased as Reynolds number increased. Results by transient liquid crystals technique showed that the heat transfer coefficient strongly depended on the main stream temperature used in heat transfer coefficient calculation. The averaged heat transfer coefficients measured by different methods showed similar trend as Reynolds number changed, but the value varied up to 40% depending on the measurement technique.
