  • A study on the recovery of silver and nitric acid in the liquid waste resulted from the mediated electrochemical oxidation(MEO) process was conducted. The removal of silver in the concentrated nitric acid solutions was carried out by the electrodeposition. The removal efficiency more than 98% could be obtained in nitric acid concentrations less than 3 M with the current efficiency of nearly 100%. The experimonts on the evaporation for the recovery of nitric acid were performed as well. At the evaporation factor of 25., the degree of nitric acid recovery in 3.5 M nitric acid solution containing 0.5 to 1.0 mol% NaNO, was 80~90% resulting in 2.8~3.1 M nitric acid. The design factors and operating conditions of the distillation tower were analyzed by using MEH model derived by Maphtali-Sandholm with the throughput of 4 kg/hr for the enrichment of dilute nitric acid solution recovered by evaporation to reuse in the MEO process. The distillation column composed of eleven theoretical stages having the overall tray efficiency of 70% are needed to obtain 1.03 kg/h of 12M nitric acid and 2.97 kg/h of water with feed being introduced to the column at tray 6 from the bottom at the reflux ratio of 0.25, the reboiler with the heat load of 2.7 kW, and the condenser with the cooling load of 0.5 kW.

  • Following the earthquake in Gyeongju (2016) and Pohang (2017), South Korea is no longer a safe place for earthquakes. Accordingly, the need for shelters suitable for disaster environments is increasing. In this study, a lightweight composite panel was used to produce post-disaster housing for refugees to compensate for the disadvantages of existing evacuation facilities. For this purpose, an evaluation of structural performance and thermal environment for post-disaster housing for refugees composed of lightweight composite panels was performed. To assess the structural performance, a lateral loading test was conducted on a system made of lightweight composite panels. The specimens consisted of two types, which differed according to the bonding method, as a variable. In addition, the seismic and wind loads were calculated in accordance with KBC 2016 and compared with the experimental results. Regarding the energy performance, optimization of south-facing window planning and window-wall ratio and solar heat gain coefficient were analyzed to minimize heating, cooling, and lighting energy. As a result, the specimens composed of lightweight composite panels will perform sufficiently safely for lateral loads and the optimized window planning will lead to a low-energy operation.

  • It is well known that the aluminizing steel is excellent in corrosion resistance and heat resistance. Therefore it has been used as boiler parts, heat exchanger parts and guide rails which are used under comparatively simple conditions. Recently, it has been noticed that aluminizing steel has high resistance to various atmosphere, high temperature oxidation and seawater resistance. So its usage has been extended widely to the production of parts such as intake and exhaust valve of internal combustion engine, turbine blade and pipelines On ships which required such properties. It is considered that aluminium coated steel is excellent in wear resistance because of high hardness on main ingredient FezAIs of Fe-AI alloy layer existed in diffusion coating layer. And it will beused as a new material taking wear resitance with seawater resistance in marine field. However it is difficult to findout any report concering the wear behaviors or properties of alum in izing steel. In this study the experiment was carried out under the condition of rolling-sliding contact using an Amsler-type wear testing machine at 0.80, 0.91, 1. 10, 1. 25% of slip ratio and 55.43, 78.38, 110.85 kg/mm^2 of Hertz's contact stress in run-in period for the purpose of service-ability test of aluminizing steel as a wear resisting material and obtaining the available design data. The followings are the obtained results from the experimen tal study; 1) The 2nd diffusion material has most excellent wear resistance. This material has brought out about 18% decrease of wear weight in a lower friction load level and 40~G decrease in a higher level comparing to the raw material. 2) Satisfactory effect of wear resistivity cannot be much expected in 2nd diffusion specimens. This is considered due to the formation of fine void in the alloy layer near the boundary to the aluminium layer. 3) Fracture on friction surface of aluminizing steel by the rolling-sliding contact is spalling, and spalling crack occurres initially beneath the specimen surface near the boundary in diffusion coating layer.

  • The PSCB girder bridge is a closed cross-section in which the top and bottom flanges and the web are integrated, and the structural characteristics are generally different from the bridges in which the girder and the floor plate are separated, so a maintenance plan that reflects the characteristics of the PSCB girder bridge is required. As a result of analyzing damage types by collecting detailed safety diagnosis reports of highway PSCB girder bridges, most of the deterioration and damage occurring during use is concentrated on the top flange. In particular, cracks in the bridge direction on the underside of the top flange occurred in about 70 % of the PSCB girder bridges to be analyzed, and these cracks were judged to be caused by indirect loads such as heat of hydration and drying shrinkage rather than structural cracks caused by external loads. In order to improve durability and reduce maintenance costs of PSCB girder bridges in use, it is necessary to control restraint drying shrinkage cracks from the design stage. Therefore, in this paper, the cracks caused by drying shrinkage under restraint, which is the main cause of cracks under the flanges of the top part of the PSCB girder bridge, were directly calculated using the Gilbert Model, and the influencing factors such as the amount of reinforcing bars, diameter and spacing of reinforcing bars were analyzed. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the crack width caused by restraint drying shrinkage exceeded the allowable crack width of 0.2 mm for reinforcing bars with a reinforcing bar ratio of 0.01 or less based on the H16 reinforcing bar and a reinforcing bar with a diameter greater than H19 based on the reinforcing bar ratio of 0.01. Finally, based on the results of the crack width review, a method for controlling the crack width of the top flange of the PSCB girder bridge was proposed.

  • In order to improve the emission of diesel engines, natural gas-diesel dual fuel combustion compression ignition engines are in the spotlight. In particular, a reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) combustion strategy is investigated comprehensively due to its possibility to improve both efficiency and emissions. With advanced diesel direct injection timing earlier than TDC, it achieves spontaneous reaction with overall lean mixture from a homogeneous mixture in the entire cylinder area, reducing nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) and improving braking heat efficiency at the same time. However, there is a disadvantage in that the amount of incomplete combustion increases in a low load region with a relatively small amount of fuel-air. To solve this, sensitive control according to the diesel injection timing and fuel ratio is required. In this study, experiments were conducted to improve efficiency and exhaust emissions of the natural gas-diesel dual fuel engine at low load, and evaluate combustion stability according to the diesel injection timing at the operation point for power generation. A 6 L-class commercial diesel engine was used for the experiment which was conducted under a 50% load range (~50 kW) at 1,800 rpm. Two injectors with different spray patterns were applied to the experiment, and the fraction of natural gas and diesel injection timing were selected as main parameters. Based on the experimental results, it was confirmed that the brake thermal efficiency increased by up to 1.3%p in the modified injector with the narrow-angle injection added. In addition, the spray pattern of the modified injector was suitable for premixed combustion, increasing operable range in consideration of combustion instability, torque reduction, and emissions level under Tier-V level (0.4 g/kWh for NOx).
