  • Natural convection of a magnetic fluid is different from that of Newtonian fluids because magnetic-body force exists in addition to gravity and buoyancy. In this paper, natural convection of a magnetic fluids (W-40) in a cubic cavity was examined by experimental method. One side wall was kept at a constant temperature (25 $^{\circ}C$), and the opposite side wall was also held at a constant but lower temperature (20 $^{\circ}C$). The magnetic fields of various magnitude were applied up and down by permanent magnets. We measured temperatures at 5 points which are the most suitable places in cavity by the analysis record. The thermo-sensitive liquid crystal film (R20C5A) was utilized in order to visualize wall-temperature distributions. Several kinds of experiments were carried out in order to clarify the influence of direction and intensity of magnetic fields on the natural convection. It was found that the natural convection of a magnetic fluids could be controlled by the direction and intensity of the magnetic fields.

  • The numerical simulation of heavy precipitation event occurred in the central Korean Peninsula on July 26-28, 1996 was performed using the fine mesh model. ARPS (Advanced Regional Prediction System) developed by the CAPS (Center for Analysis and Prediction of Storms). Usually, the heavy rainfalls occurred at late July in the Korean Peninsula were difficult to predict, and showed very strong rainfall intensity. As results, they caused a great loss of life and property. As it usual, this case was unsuccessful to predict the location of rain band and the precipitation intensity with the coarse-mesh model. The same case was, however, simulated well with fine-mesh storm-scale model, ARPS. Moisture band at 850 hPa appeared along the Changma Front in the area of China through central Korea passed Yellow Sea. Also the low-level jet at 700 hPa existed in the Yellow Sea through central Korea and they together offered favorable condition to induce heavy rainfall in that area. The convective activities developed to a meso-scale convective system were observed at near the Yangtze River and moved to the central Korean Peninsula. Furthermore, the intrusion of warm and moist air, origninated from typhoon, into the Asia Continent might result in heavy rainfall formation through redistribution of moisture and heat. In the vertical circulation, the heavy rainfall was formed between the upper- and low-level jets, especially, the entrance region of the upper-level jet above the exit the region of the low-level jet. The low level convergence, the upper level divergence and the strong vertical wind were organized to the very north of the low level jet and concentrated on tens to hundreds km horizontal distance. These result represent the upper- and low-level jets are one of the most important reasons on the formation of heavy precipitation.

  • Anodized tubular $TiO_2$ electrodes (ATTEs) with three noticeably different lengths are prepared to determine their optimum length for the photo-driven activity in the reaction of Cr(VI) reduction and hydrogen evolution. The ATTEs with ethylene glycol have longer $TiO_2$ tubes (7-15.6 ${\mu}m$) than those with hydrfluoric acid (0.6-0.8 ${\mu}m$). These samples, which differ only in the length of the tubes, with a wall thickness of ca. 20 nm, consist mainly of an anatase crystalline phase after heat treatment at $650^{\circ}C$, since the anatase crystallites at the tube walls do not undergo transformation into rutile phase, due to the constraints imposed by the wall thickness. Among them, the medium size (ca. 8 ${\mu}m$) tubes provide the optimum conditions, irrespective of the light intensity, which is explained in terms of the correlation between the amount of photons and the adsorbed electron acceptors and their location. Photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction leads to ca. 60% reduction of Cr(VI) even under 1 sun irradiation with the medium-sized anodized $TiO_2$ tubes, but only ca. 20% with the short- and long-sized tubes. For hydrogen evolution, tubes longer than 8 ${\mu}m$ do not exhibit better performance with any light intensity.

  • The p-CIn2Te4 single crystal was grown in the three-stage vertical electric furnace by using Bridgman method. The quality of the grown crystal has been investigated by the x-ray diffraction and the photoluminescence measurements. From the photoluminescence spectra of the as-grown CdIn2Te4 crystal and the various heat-treated crystals, the (Do, X) emission was found to be the dominant intensity in the photoluminescence spectrum of the CdIn2Te4:Cd, while the (Ao, X) emission completely disappeared in the CdIn2Te4:Cd. However, the (Ao, X) emission in the photoluminescence spectrum of the CdIn2Te4:Te was the dominant intensity like an as-grown CdIn2Te4 crystal. These results indicated that the (Do, X) is associated with VTe acted as donor and that the (Ao, X) emission is related to VCd acted as acceptor, respectively. The p-CdIn2Te4 crystal was found to be obviously converted into the n-type after annealing in the Cd atmosphere. The origin of (Do, Ao) emission and its TO phonon replicas is related to the interaction between donors such as VTe or Cdint, and accepters such as VCd or Teint. Also, the In in the CdIn2Te4 was confirmed not to form the native defects because it existed in the stable form of bonds.

The quality of the grown crystal has been investigated by x-ray diffraction and photoluminescence measurements. From the photoluminescence spectra of the as-grown $CdIn_{2}Te_{4}$ crystal and the various heat-treated crystals, the ($D^{o}$, X) emission was found to be the dominant intensity in the photoluminescence spectrum of the $CdIn_{2}Te_{4}$:Cd, while the ($A^{o}$, X) emission completely disappeared in the $CdIn_{2}Te_{4}$:Cd. However, the ($A^{o}$, X) emission in the photoluminescence spectrum of the $CdIn_{2}Te_{4}$:Te was the dominant intensity like in the as-grown $CdIn_{2}Te_{4}$ crystal. • Graphene has been synthesized on 100- and 300-nm-thick Ni/$SiO_2$/Si substrates with $CH_4$ gas (1 SCCM) diluted in mixed gases of 10% $H_2$ and 90% Ar (99 SCCM) at $900^{\circ}C$ by using inductively-coupled plasma chemical vapor deposition (ICP-CVD). The film morphology of 100-nm-thick Ni changed to islands on $SiO_2$/Si substrate after heat treatment at $900^{\circ}C$ for 2 min because of grain growth, whereas 300-nm-thick Ni still maintained a film morphology. Interestingly, suspended graphene was formed among Ni islands on 100-nm-thick Ni/$SiO_2$/Si substrate for the very short growth of 1 sec. In addition, the size of the graphene domains was much larger than that of Ni grains of 300-nm-thick Ni/$SiO_2$/Si substrate. These results suggest that graphene growth is strongly governed by the direct formation of graphene on the Ni surface due to reactive carbon radicals highly activated by ICP, rather than to well-known carbon precipitation from carbon-containing Ni. The D peak intensity of the Raman spectrum of graphene on 300-nm-thick Ni/$SiO_2$/Si was negligible, suggesting that high-quality graphene was formed. The 2D to G peak intensity ratio and the full-width at half maximum of the 2D peak were approximately 2.6 and $47cm^{-1}$, respectively. The several-layer graphene showed a low sheet resistance value of $718{\Omega}/sq$ and a high light transmittance of 87% at 550 nm.

  • The analysis on the bus bar effect is conducted to develop a cost effective 24kV/2,000A switchgear. The temperature enclosures and bus bars could rise due to several heat sources such as eddy current losses and copper losses. Therefore, a study on the characteristics of the electric field intensity and electromagnetic loss according to the bus bar size in a bus bar compartment is essential to design a electrically reliable high voltage switchgear. It is investigated that the electromagnetic influence to the temperature rising and the dielectric stability according to various bus bar sizes by using finite element method(FEM). The electric field intensity and electromagnetic loss according to various bus bar sizes are calculated to design a reliable and a high voltage switchgear. As results, it is found that the electromagnetic loss and the dielectric stability of bus bar could be determined by a bus bar size. It means that a cost effective 24kV/2,000A high voltage switchgear could be developed by selecting the proper size of a bus bar. Also, it is recognized that the electromagnetic characteristics according to various bus bar sizes in order to design an electrically stable high voltage switchgear when the enclosure size is determined as a fixed value. Futhermore, studies on the various nominal voltage class and bus bar sizes will be conducted to develop a cost effective high voltage switchgear.

  • Fly ash has the advantages, among others, of improving the characteristics of concrete, reducing the price of concrete products, improving the durability, and reducing hydration heat. However, when added in mass, it leads to problems such as insufficient concrete intensity, increase of AE use, and others, resulting in a limitation of the use volume. Therefore, this study is undertaken to solve the problems associated with themass use of fly ash through the high concentration powder ($4000{\sim}8000cm^2/g$) of fly ash, curing method, the addition of an alkali stimulation agent and others for the purpose of increasing the added value of the fly ash. The research showed that the intensity manifestation has an outstanding status, with the hydrates reaching a very stable condition if the rate of addition of a stimulation agent is appropriately used with the heightening of the fineness of the fly ash in the temperature range of $40^{\circ}C$, and if the applicable study is continued, it is likely to result ineffective value generation on the massive replacement of fly ash.

  • Blue light-emitting phosphors having the excitation spectrum range of the medium-long ultraviolet ($280nm{\sim}400nm$) have been prepared by solid state reaction method. As a starting material the natural alkaline feldspar powder produced from the domestic mine field in Buyeo, Chungnam-do. The photoluminescence characteristics and crystal structures have been analyzed for the phosphor samples. The powder mixture of the natural alkaline feldspar and the rare-earth oxide was calcined at $800{\sim}1000^{\circ}C\;for\;3{\sim}4h$ in air. The calcined samples we fully ground at room temperature and then heat-treated in the mild reducing gas atmosphere of $5%H_2-95%N_2$ mixture at $1100{\sim}1150^{\circ}C\;for\;3{\sim}4h$. The natural alkaline feldspar material consists of the monoclinic orthoclase ($KAlSi_3O_8$) and the triclinic albite ($NaAlSi_3O_8$) phases. At the $0.5wt%Eu_2O_3$ addition the PL spectrum showed the maximum intensity and with further increase of $Eu_2O_3$ the PL intensity decreased. The albite phase disappeared in the $Eu_2O_3$ doped phosphors. The effect of the co-doped activator on the PL characteristics have been also discussed.

  • Resonating thermal lags of solid fuel with heat transfer oscillations generated by boundary layer oscillation is the primary mechanism of the occurrence of the LFI (Low Frequency Combustion Instability) in hybrid rocket combustion. This study was experimentally attempted to confirm that how the boundary layer was perturbed and led to the LFI. Special attention was also made on oxidizer swirl injection to investigate the contribution to combustion stabilization. Also the overall behavior of fluctuating boundary layer flow and the occurrence of the LFI was monitored as swirl intensity increased. Fluctuating boundary layer was successfully monitored by the captured image and POD (Proper Orthogonal Decomposition) analysis. In the results, oscillating boundary layer became stabilized as the swirl intensity increases. And the coupling strength between high frequency p', q' diminished and periodical amplification of RI (Rayleigh Index) with similar frequency band of thermal lag was also decreased. Thus, results confirmed that oscillating axial boundary layer triggered by periodic coupling of high frequency p', q' is the primary mechanism to excite thermal resonance with thermal lag characteristics of solid fuel.
