Effect of pre-treatment on the gas nitriding process of austenitic stainless steels has been investigated and the following results were obtained. Minimum pre-treatment time was decreased to 5min with increasing treatment temperature from $200^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$. Surface activation effect by the pre-treatment was maintained in the air up to holding time of 64hr, judging from the analysis result of gas nitrided specimens. The Depth of nitrided layer of STS 304 and 316 stainless steels were ranged from $5{\mu}m$ to $90{\mu}m$ at $440^{\circ}C{\sim}600^{\circ}C$. The X-ray diffraction intensity for austenitic stainless steels were increases as nitriding temperature from $440^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$.
Ti-45.2at.%Ni-5at.%Cu and Ti-40.2at.%Ni-10atat.%Cu alloy powders were fabricated by gas atomization process. The microstructures, Shape, hardness and phase transformation behaviors of the powders were investigated by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, micro-hardness measurement, x-ray diffraction analyses and differential scanning calorimetry. The hardness of the Ti-Ni-XCu alloy powders decreased as Cu-content increased. The x-ray diffraction analyses were carried out for powders without heat treatment, and those that treated at 85$0^{\circ}C$ for an hour in a vaccum state($10^5$ torr) and then quenched into ice water. The intensity of B$19^t$ phase increased with heat treating. The monoclinic B$19^t$ martensite was formed in the Ti-Ni-XCu alloy powders during cooling.
The structural integrity of mechanical components during several transients should be assured in the design stage. This requires a fatigue analysis including thermal and stress analyses. As an example, this study performs a fatigue analysis of the reactor pressure vessel of SMART during arbitrary transients. Using heat transfer coefficients determined based on the operating environments, a transient thermal analysis is performed and the results are applied to a finite element model along with the pressure to calculate the stresses. The total stress intensity range and cumulative fatigue usage factor are investigated to determine the adequacy of the design.
In producing cordierite glass-ceramics by sintering, following experiments were conducted in order to determine the optimum heat-treatment schedule for high-crystallinity and dense sintered body. The glass composition of 11.67MgO-29.46Al2O3-52.88SiO2-5P2O5-1B2O3 (wt%) was selected on the basis of the early experiment. The 3-step heat treatment schedule was determined by the results of DTA, Dilatometric measurement and high-temperature XRD, where the particle-size-controlled glass powder was used. The degree of densification and the crystallinity were evaluated by the measurement of the bulk density and X-ray scattering intensity. The specimen fired with the optimum conditions showed ${\alpha}$-cordierite phase, relative density ∼98%, crystallinity ∼92%, thermal expansion coefficient ∼30${\times}$10-7/$^{\circ}C$, dielectric constant ∼5.5 and resistivity ∼1.0${\times}$1012 {{{{ OMEGA }}cm, respectively.
A fully coupled fluid flow, heat, and solute transport model was developed to investigate turbulent flow, solidification, and macrosegregation in a continuous casting process of steel slab with EMBR. Transport equations of mass, momentum, energy, and species for a binary iron-carbon alloy system were solved using a continuum model. The electromagnetic field was described by the Maxwell equations. A finite-volume method was employed to solve the conservation equations associated with appropriate boundary conditions. The effects of intensity of magnetic field and carbon segregation were investigated. The electromagnetic field reduces the velocity of molten flow in the mold and an increase in the percentage of C in steel results in a decrease of carbon segregation ratio.
The effects of injection angles between $0^{\circ}$ and $9^{\circ}$, mainstream turbulent intensities between 0.36 percent and 9.3 percent and embedded longitudinal vortices on jets issuing from a single film cooling hole and from a row of inclined holes are investigated. The heat transfer coefficients around film cooling holes are affected greatly by the compound injection angles. The injected jets affected weakly by the freestream turbulence at low level. However, the heat transfer coefficients near the film cooling holes have higher values at a high turbulence intensity. The vortices generated from a delta winglet change the injected jet direction and the kidney-type vortex pattern.
The fire whirl occurring in the urban and/or wildland fire is generated by the instabilities of atmosphere. The fire whirl is a rare phenomenon, but highly destructive because it has high inhalation and lift force. In this study, experimental study is performed with oriental oak leaves, for investigating of the fire whirl characteristics occurred in wildland fire. As a result of experiment, the circulation intensity increases as increasing of the induced air velocity, and then the fire whirl occurs. Also, the heat release rate and flame height increase 22% and 18% in highest circulation.
In this study, the discrete ordinates method which has been widely used in the solution of neutron transport equation is applied to the solution of the time dependent radiative transfer equation. The self-adjoint form of the second order radiation intensity equation is used to enhance the stability of the solution, and a new multi-step linearization method is developed to avoid the nonlinearity in the material temperature equation. This new solution method is applied to the well known Marshak wave problem, and the numerical result is compared with that of the conventional Monte-Carlo method.

The micro laser module was designed and prepared to deliver the light to the HAMR head. It consists of laser diode, photo diode and actuator to realize stable light delivery even though the head is fluctuated during the disk rotation. The optical evaluation was carried out with the actual distance between the light source and HAMR head with a range of reflectivity and it was found that the incident angle could be controlled within ${\pm}0.125^{\circ}$ to maintain same intensity into the HAMR head. It was also confirmed that the designed micro laser module is thermally stable without any severe effect on the magnetic head.
In this study, boron/silicon sol compounds were applied to wood for construction and durable materials, and fire risks were investigated in terms of smoke performance index (SPI), smoke growth index (SGI), and smoke intensity (SI). The compound was synthesized by reacting tetraethoxyorthosilicate with boric acid and boronic acid derivatives. Smoke characteristics were investigated using a cone calorimeter (ISO 5660-1) equipment for cypress wood. The fire intensity fixed the external heat flux at 50 kW/㎡. The smoke performance index measured after the combustion reaction increased between 13.4% and 126.7% compared with cypress wood. The fire risk due to the smoke performance index decreased in the order of cypress, phenylboronic acid/silicon sol (PBA/Si), (2-methylpropyl) boronic acid/silicon sol (IBBA/Si), boric acid/silicon sol (BA/Si). The smoke growth index decreased between 12.0% and 57.5% compared to the base specimen. The risk of fire caused by the smoke growth index decreased in the order of cypress, PBA/Si, IBBA/Si, BA/Si. The fire risk due to smoke intensity decreased between 3.2% and 57.8%, and in the order of cypress, PBA/Si, IBBA/Si, BA/Si. COpeak concentrations ranged between 85 and 93 ppm, and decreased between 37% and 43% compared to the base specimen. A comprehensive assessment of the fire risk on smoke hazards decreased in the order of cypress, PBA/Si, IBBA/Si, BA/Si.
