  • The flow structure and heat transfer characteristics of a turbulent buoyant jet were investigated experimentally. The instantaneous temperature and velocity fields in the near field were measured using a two-frame PIV and PLIF techniques. A thin light sheet illuminated a two-dimensional cross section of the buoyant jet in which Rhodamine B was added as a fluorescent dye. The intensity variations of LIF signal from Rhodamine B molecules scattered by the laser light were captured by a CCD camera after passing an optical filter. By ensemble averaging the instantaneous temperature and velocity fields, the mean temperature and velocity fields as well as the spatial distributions of turbulent statistics were obtained. The results show the flow structure and convective heat transfer of the developing shear layer in the near field.

  • Recent high oil price results in the development of energy saving technology such as LED lighting system. Street-lighting system using COH LED package can save energy because the heat dissipation through cupper base is better than conventional technology. Studies on manufacturing processes of lighting system are insufficient even though LED package design and its heat analysis have been studied. This study focuses on the problem and solution of manufacturing processes such as LED packaging process, optimized emission angle, and LED bar dimension for mechanical assembly. As a result, we established better manufacturing alternatives of LED packaging and street-lighting system with higher lighting efficiency of 84 lm/W, as well as good illumination intensity of 39.7 lux at 6 m from lighting source.

  • The popcorn cracking phenomena in plastic IC packages during reflow soldering are investigated by considering the heat transfer and moisture diffusion through the epoxy molding compound(EMC) along with the mechanics of interface delamination. Heat transfer and moisture diffusion through EMC under die pad are analyzed by finite difference method (FDM)during the pre-conditioning and subsequent reflow soldiering pro-cess and the amounts of moisture mass and vapor pressure at delaminated die pad/ EMC interface are calculated as a function of the reflow soldering time. The energy release rate stress intensity factor and phase angle were obtained under various loading conditions which are thermal crack face vapor pressure and mixed loadings. It was shown that thermal loading was the main driving force for the crack propagation for small crack lengths but vapor pressure loading played more significant role as crack grew.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the defects of dyeable polypropylene(DPP) fabric by heat setting and to describe the change of physical properties of DPP fabrics. The thermosetting was carried out in autoclave from 100 to $140^{\circ}C$ temperature range for 2 min. In this study, we investigated the effect of the thermosetting temperatures on the structural, thermal, mechanical properties(e.g., the strength and elongation) and dyeability of DPP fabrics. The melting energy(J/g), the tensile strength was found to increase with increasing temperature of thermosetting. The diffraction peak at Bragg angle($2{\theta}$) about $13.8^{\circ}$ were very strong and diffraction intensity increased with increasing thermosetting temperatures. And d-spacing and half-width decreased with increasing thermosetting temperatures. On the other hand, the dyeability(K/S) and crease recovery decreased with an increasing thermosetting temperatures.

  • Thermal deformation of machine tools can be evaluated from the analysis of the whole temperature field. However, it is extremely inefficient and impossible to acquire the whole temperature field by measuring temperatures of every point. So, a temperature estimator, which can estimate the whole temperature field from the temperatures of just a few points, is required. In this paper, 1-dimensional heat transfer problem is modeled with modal analysis and state space equations. and then state observer is designed to estimate the intensity of heat source and the whole temperature field in real-time. The reliability of this estimator is verified by making a comparison between solutions by the proposed method and the exact solutions of examples. The proposed method is applied to the estimation of temperature distribution in a ball screw system.

  • The fatigue crack propagation behavior or non-heat-treatment and thermally aged type 304 stainless steel was investigated on the basis of linear elastic fracture mechanics. This Study was concentrated on the relations between the crack propagation rate and the stress intensity factor range. The following results are obtained : The precision measurement and observation of fatigue crack propagation behavior is studied with moire grating. The effect of thermally aged type 304 stainless steel is investigated under small load. In the equation da/dN=c(.DELTA. k)/SUP m/, factor m of thermally aged steel is a little higher than non-heat-treatmented steel and its limit is m=1.35-4.2.

  • A CFD analysis has been performed to investigate turbulent heat transfer in a triangular rod bundle with a pitch-to-diameter ratio(P/D) of 1.06. Anisotropic turbulence models predicted the turbulence-driven secondary flow in the triangular subchannel and the distributions of time mean velocity and temperature showing significantly improved agreement with the measurements over the linear standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$. The anisotropic turbulence models predicted turbulence structure in large flow region fairly well but could not predict the very high turbulent intensity of azimuthal velocity observed in narrow flow region(gap).

  • Two onions (Sulfur-1 and Sulfur-4) cultivated with different sulfur applications were thermally processed to elucidate the effects of heat treatment on browning index and antioxidant activity. Sulfur-4 onion had higher sulfur content compared with the Sulfur-1 onion. After thermal processing, browning intensity was different between the two onions juices, with lower values observed for Sulfur-4 onion juice. This suggests that sulfur inhibits the Maillard browning reaction. The total reducing capacity of the juices increased at higher thermal processing temperatures; however, it was also lower in the Sulfur-4 onion juice. This suggests that the heat treatment of onions enhanced their antioxidant activity, but the effect was offset in the Sulfur-4 onion juice presumably due to higher sulfur content. This study indicates that sulfur, a core element for the functionality of onions, can decrease the antioxidant activity of thermally processed onions because of its potential as a Maillard reaction inhibitor.

  • Copper-chromium multilayers with a nominal bilayer thickness of about 400 $\AA$ (200 $\AA$ each) were prepared by dc magnetron sputtering and the evolution of microstructure during heat treatment was investigated by using x-ray diffractometry(XRD), Auger electron spectroscopy(AES) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM). It was observed that an amorphous phase with a thickness of about 40 $\AA$ was formed at the interfaces of the as-deposited Cu/Cr multilayered film using cross-sectional TEM. At elevated temperatures, the Cu(111) reflection showed increasing intensity and decreasing line-width as a result of copper grain growth. The intermixed amorphous phase disappeared after annealing at $250^{\circ}C$ for 1 h and the multilayer structure was stable up to $400^{\circ}C$ for 1 h annealing. At $600^{\circ}C$ annealing, it was observed that the multilayer structure was completely destroyed and copper and chromium phases were fully intermixed.

  • Fundmental fatigue crack propagation tests with C-T type specimens were conducted at various load ratios (R) such as 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5 in T6 and Thermomechanically treated (TMT) conditions of 7039 Al alloy. Better mechanical properties from monotonic test as well as fatigue crack propagation were obtained by TMT process owing to uniform distribution of fine microstructures and non-existence of precipitation free zone (PFZ). Through the measurement of Kop and ${\Delta}K$ at various R the concept of effective stress intensity factor range ratio, U was reviewed to asses the load ratio effect on fatigue crack propagation. A relationship between U and variables such as ${\Delta}K$ and R was obtained empirically. This may enable us to predict ${\Delta}K_{eff}$ that is of critical importance for prediction of fatigue crack propagation rate.
