An experimental study of jet impinging the non-isothermal heating surface with linear temperature gradient is conducted with the presentation of the turbulent flow characteristics and the heat transfer rate, represented by the Nusselt number. The jet Reynolds number ranges from 15,000 to 30,000, the temperature gradient of the plate is 2~4.2$^{\circ}C$/cm and the dimensionless nozzle to plate distance (H/D) is from 2 to 10. The results show that the peak of heat transfer rate occurs at the stagnation point, and the heat transfer rate decreases as the radial distance from the stagnation point increases. A remarkable feature of the heat transfer rate is the existence of the second peak. This is due to the turbulent development of the wall jet. Maximum heat transfer rate occurs when the axial distance from the nozzle to nozzle diameter (H/D) is 6 or 8. The heat transfer rate can be correlated as a power function of Prandtl number, Reynolds number, the dimensionless nozzle to plate distance (H/D) and temperature gradient (dT/dr). It has been found that the heat transfer rate increases with increasing turbulent intensity. The wall jet is influenced by temperature gradient and the effect becomes more important at higher radii.
In this study, the effect of relative position of the blade for the fixed vane has been investigated on blade surface heat transfer. The experiments were conducted in a low speed stationary annular cascade, and heat transfer of blade was examined for six positions within a pitch. Turbine test section has one stage composed of sixteen guide vanes and blades. The chord length of the tested blade is 150 mm and the mean tip clearance of the blade having flat tip is about $2.5\%$ of the blade chord. For the detailed mass transfer measurements on the blade surfaces, a naphthalene sublimation technique was used. The inlet flow Reynolds number is fixed to $1.5{\times}10^5$. Complex heat transfer characteristics are observed on the blade surface due to various flow characteristics, such as separation bubble, relaminarization, transition to turbulence and leakage vortices. The distributions of velocity and turbulence intensity change significantly with the relative position due to the blockage effect of the blade. This causes the variation of heat transfer patterns on the blade surface. The results show that the flow near the leading edge get highly disturbed and deflected toward the either side of the blade when the blade leading edge is positioned close to the trailing edge of the vane. Therefore, separation bubble disappears on the pressure side and overall heat transfer on the relaminarization region is increased. But, due to reduced tip gap flow at the upstream region, the effect of leakage flow on the upstream region of the blade surface is weakened. Thus, the heat transfer characteristics significantly change with the blade positions.
Aedes albopictus, a common species in the Republic of Korea, is internationally known as a major vector for various diseases, and it is well-adapted to urban environments. Recent insect outbreaks in urban areas, attributed to climate change and urban heat islands, have increased the necessity of researching the effects on mosquito populations. This study analyzed climate data from 25 Automatic Weather System (AWS) stations in Seoul, identifying urban areas with pronounced heat island effects and suburban areas with milder effects. Nine urban heat island conditions were established based on this analysis, under which the hatching rates of Ae. albopictus were examined. The results revealed an increase in hatching rates correlating with the intensity of the urban heat island effect. Regression analysis further indicated that this trend accelerates as the strength of the heat island effect increases. This study suggests that temperature variations resulting from urban heat island phenomena can significantly influence the hatching rates of Ae. albopictus.
Metal cutting operations involve generation of heat due to friction between the tool and the pieces. This heat needs to be carried away otherwise it creates white spots. To reduce this abnormal heat cutting fluid is used. Cutting fluid also has an important role in the lubrication of the cutting edges of machine tools and the pieces they are shaping, and in sluicing away the resulting swarf. As a cutting fluid, water is a great conductor of heat but is not stable at high temperatures, so to improve stability an emulsion type mixed fluid with water and oil is often used. It is pumped over the cutting site of cutting machines as a state of atomized water droplet coated with oil by using jet. In this paper, to develop cutting fluid supplying nozzle to obtain ultra thin oil film for coating water droplet, a numerical analysis of three dimensional mixed fluid Jet through multi-stage nozzle was carried out by using a finite volume method. Jet flow characteristics such as nozzle exit velocity, development of mixing region, re-entrance and jet intensity were analyzed. Detailed mixing process of fluids such as air, water and oil in the nozzle were also investigated. It is easy to understand complex flow pattern in multi-stage nozzle. Important flow Information for advance design of cutting fluid supplying nozzle was drawn.

To study the effect of cloud on the variabilities of turbulent fluxes over the flat terrain, we used the gradient method to analyze the dynamic and thermodynamic data from the meteorological 9-m mast (0.75, 3 and 9 m) in Villafria airport in Spain. The decrease of the surface wind speed is governed by cooling at the surface following the evening transition. The sensible heat flux and the momentum flux are increased with the dynamic factor rather than the thermodynamic factor, and the sensible heat flux was not affected by the thermal condition. The global radiation did not play an important role in the variation of the sensible heat flux in the cloudy day, but the atmospheric surface layer was characterized rather by the wind intensity.
Measurements of OH chemiluminescence in an atmospheric pressure, laboratory-scale dump combustor at equivalence ratios ranging from 0.63 to 0.89 were reported. The signal from the first electronically excited state of OH to ground state was detected through a band-pass filter with an ICCD. The objectives of this study are two: One is to see the effects of equivalence ratio on global heat release rate and local Rayleigh index distribution. To get the local Rayleigh index distribution, the line-of-sight images were inverted by tomographic method, such as Abel de-convolution. Another aim is to investigate the validity of using OH chemiluminescence acquired with an ICCD as a qualitative measure of local heat release. For constant inlet velocity and temperature, the overall intensities of OH emission acquired at different equivalence ratio showed periodic and higher value at high equivalence ratio. OH intensity averaged over one period of pressure increased exponentially with equivalence ratio. Local Rayleigh index distribution clearly showed the region of amplifying or damping the combustion instability as equivalence ratio increased. It could provide an information/insights on active control such as secondary fuel injection. Finally, local heat release rate derived from reconstructed OH images were presented for typical locations.
The Urban Canopy Model (UCM) implemented in WRF model is applied to improve urban meteorological forecast for fine-scale (about 1-km horizontal grid spacing) simulations over the city of Seoul. The results of the surface air temperature and wind speed predicted by WRF-UCM model is compared with those of the standard WRF model. The 2-m air temperature and wind speed of the standard WRF are found to be lower than observation, while the nocturnal urban canopy temperature from the WRF-UCM is superior to the surface air temperature from the standard WRF. Although urban canopy temperature (TC) is found to be lower at industrial sites, TC in high-intensity residential areas compares better with surface observation than 2-m temperature. 10-m wind speed is overestimated in urban area, while urban canopy wind (UC) is weaker than observation by the drag effect of the building. The coupled WRF-UCM represents the increase of urban heat from urban effects such as anthropogenic heat and buildings, etc. The study indicates that the WRF-UCM contributes for the improvement of urban weather forecast such nocturnal heat island, especially when an accurate urban information dataset is provided.

Heat island phenomena in Chuncheon (Korea) were investigated using air temperature measured by automatic weather stations and temperature dataloggers located at rural and urban sites. Numerical simulation of the phenomena was performed using Weather Research and Forecasting Urban Canopy Model (WRF-UCM) and results were compared with the observation. The model was initialized with NCEP/FNL data. The horizontal resolution of the fine domain is 0.33 km. The results of observational analyses show that the intensity of heat island was significantly higher during the nighttime than during the daytime. The highest measured temperature difference between rural and urban site is $3.49^{\circ}C$ and average temperature difference varies between 1.4 and $1.9^{\circ}C$. Good agreement was found between the simulated and observed temperatures. However, significantly overestimated wind speed was found at the urban sites. The linear regression analysis between observed and simulated temperature shows high correlation coefficient 0.96 for urban and 0.94 for rural sites while for wind speed, a very low correlation coefficient was found, 0.30 and 0.55 respectively.

The experimental study on flow and heat transfer characteristics was conducted to investigate and to compare the performance of swirl jet by a twisted tape as a swirl generator with the performance of impinging single circular jet in fully developed flow tube. The effects of jet Reynolds number(Re=8700, 13800, 20000, 26500), dimensionless distance of nozzle-to-plate(H/d=2, 4, 6, 8) and swirl ratio(S=0.11, 0.23, 0.30) of the jet on the local and average Nusselt number have been examined. Measurements of local heat transfer rate and flow patterns on the jet impinging plate were used naphthalene sublimation technique and flow visualization technique respectively. Mean velocity and turbulence intensity of the jet along the centerline were measured. With a twisted tape in the nozzle exit, average Nusselt number at the around area of stagnation point were higher than those without the twisted tape at H/d=2, 4 and with the increase of Reynolds number. With a twisted tape in the nozzle, in the case of H/d=2, Re=26500 and S=0.11, maximum local Nusselt number at the region of y/d=0 and x/d=0.44 was obtained.

An observational study of urban heat island was carried out using field data obatined during 6 days in May and August 1992 in Chunchon(population size 180.000). Air temperature was measured at 64 points along two sampling ruoutes by themisters attached to cars. Both routes cover urban and rural area and across the cneter of urban area. Continuous observation of air sonde was perfomed to clarify heights of nocturnal boundary layer(NBL) at the center of urban area. Surface meteorological observations were performed at both urban and rural sites. This study showed that heat island phenomena was obviously observed at the urbanized area during the night time with low wind speed. The average NBL heights exteded to about 10 meters, but varied with meteorological conditions. After sunset, the air temperature decreased with time at both sites and cooling rate at the urban site was greater than the rural site. The maximum heat island intensity was 7.5$^{\circ}$C at 21 LST, May 4. Usingthe two meteorological data sets obtained from urban and rural sites, the air pollutant concentration was calculated by Gaussian plume model which can obtain not only horizontal distribution of concentration but also vertical distribution. The result indicated that the concentration resulted from urban meteorological data set was lower than that from rural meteorological data set. It was also calculated that the air pollutant extended to higher level in urban meteorological data set than that in rural meteorological data set.
