Convective boiling heat transfer coefficients were measured in a horizontal minichannel with R-l34a. The test section was made of stainless steel tube with an inner diameter of 3.0 mm and a length of 2m. It was uniformly heated by applying electric current directly to the tube. Local heat transfer coefficients were obtained for heat fluxes from 10 to $40kW/m^2$, mass fluxes from 200 to $600kgT/m^2s$, qualities up to 1.0, and the inlet saturation temperature of $10^{\circ}C$. The experimental results were mapped on Wojtan et $al.'s^(7)$ and Wang et $al.'s^(8)$ flow pattern maps. The nucleate boiling was predominant at low vapor quality whereas the convective boiling was predominant at high vapor quality. Laminar flow appeared in the flow with minichannel. The experimental results were compared with six existing two-phase heat transfer coefficient correlations. A new boiling heat transfer coefficient correlation based on the superposition model for refrigerants was developed with mean and average deviations of 10.39% and -3.66%, respectively.
To estimate the thermal effect of the vegetation canopy on the surface sublayer environment numerically, we used the combined model of Pielke's1) single layer model for vegetation and Deardorff's2) Force restore method(FRM) for soil layer. Application of present combined model to three surface conditions, ie., unsaturated bare soil, saturated bare soil and saturated vegetation canopy, showed followings; The diurnal temperature range of saturated vegetation canopy is only 20K, while saturated bare soil and unsaturated bare soil surface are 30K, 35K, respectively. The maximum temperature of vegetation canopy occurs at noon, about 2 hours earlier than that of the non-vegetation cases. The peak latent heat fluxes of vegetation canopy is simulated as a 600Wm-2 at 1300 LST. They have higher values during afternoon than beforenoon. Furthermore, the energy redistribution ratios to latent heat fluxes also increased in the late afternoon. Therefore, oasis effect driving from the vegetation canopy is reinforced during late afternoon compared with the non-vegetated conditions.
International efforts have focused recently on the development of tungsten surfaces that can intercept energetic ionized and neutral atoms, and heat fluxes in the divertor region of magnetic fusion confinement devices. The combination of transient heating and local swelling due to implanted helium and hydrogen atoms has been experimentally shown to lead to severe surface and sub-surface damage. We present here a computational model to determine the relationship between the thermo-mechanical loading conditions, and the onset of damage and failure of tungsten surfaces. The model is based on thermo-elasticity, coupled with a grain boundary damage mode that includes contact cohesive elements for grain boundary sliding and fracture. This mechanics model is also coupled with a transient heat conduction model for temperature distributions following rapid thermal pulses. Results of the computational model are compared to experiments on tungsten bombarded with energetic helium and deuterium particle fluxes.

One of the cold start problems of a FCV is the freezing of the water in the water tank when a FCV is not in operation and the surrounding temperature drops below $0^{\circ}C$. The ice in the tank should be melted as quickly as possible for a satisfactory operation of fuel cell vehicles. In this study, the melting process for the constant heat fluxes of the plate heaters was numerically calculated in the 2-D model of the tank and plate heaters. The enthalpy method and FVM code was used for this analysis. The changes of the temperature with heat fluxes and the heat transfer area could be investigated. The energy balance error was found to increase with the heat flux. From this numerical analysis, the proper heat flux value and some important design factors relating local overheating and pressurization of the water tank could be examined.

The effect of thermal stratification on the turbulent dispersion from a fine cylindrical heat source was experimentally examined in a wind tunnel with and without a strong temperature gradient. A 0.5 mm dia. nichrome wire was used as a line heat source. Turbulent intensities, r.m.s. value of temperature and convective heat fluxes were measured by using a hot-wire and cold-wire combination probe. The results show that the peack value and the spread of the vertical turbulent intensity for the stratified case are far lower than those in the neutral case, which indicates that the stable temperature gradient suppresses the vertical velocity component. All of the third order moments including heat fluxes measured in the stable condition have very small values than those of the neutral case. This nature suggests that the decrease of scalar fluctuations in the stably stratified flow is mainly due to the suppression ofthe turbulent diffusion processes by the stable stratification. A simple gradient model with a composite timescale which has a simple weighted algebraic mean between dynamic and thermal time scale yields reasonably good numerical values in comparison with the experimental data.

The spatial variability of soil heat fluxes in a conifer forest was investigated by meteorological measurement. The maximum daily averages of R $s_{dn}$ and Rn were about 260 W $m^{-2}$ and 180 W $m^{-2}$ . The daily average of G was typically 10% of net radiation during mid-July to mid-August. The measured soil heat flux of $G_{6}$ was suitable to calculate G within 2% error during the study period. A time delay in the maximum nux at a depth of 0.1 m by heat storage was observed. About 10 to 15 W $m^{-2}$ of error can occur, if it is neglected.
Because of environmental issues caused by CFC, HCFC or HFC refrigerants, new alternative refrigerants has gained a significant attention. This paper presents experimental information on heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop behavior during evaporation process of R32/290 mixtures in a horizontal smooth tube. A smooth tube with outer diameter of 5 mm and length of 5 m was selected as a test tube. Heat transfer coefficients and pressure drop characteristics were measured for a range of mass fluxes from 497 to 994 $kg/m^2s$, heat fluxes from 12 to 20 $kW/m^2$ and for several mixture compositions(100/0, 75/25, 58.4/41.6, 2s/75, 100/0 by wt% of R32/290). The differences of measured heat transfer characteristics among various R32/290 refrigerant mixtures were analyzed for various compositions.

Refrigerant mixtures provide an opportunity to adjust their properties to fit design criteria and a possibility to create new blends that can improve heat transfer characteristics. Therefore, mixture of $CO_2$ and propane is chosen which may be a promising refrigerant and has good environmental compatibility. This paper presents measured heat transfer coefficient data during evaporation process of $CO_2$/propane mixtures flowing upward in vertical smooth and. micro-fin tubes. Smooth and micro-fin tubes with outer diameters of 5 mm and length of 1.44in were selected as test tubes. The tests were conducted at mass fluxes of 212 to $656kg/m^{2}s$, inlet temperatures of -10 to $30^{\circ}C$, heat fluxes of 15 to $60\;kW/m^2$ and for several compositions (75/25, 50/50, 25/75 wt%). Among $CO_2$/propane refrigerant mixtures, the heat transfer characteristics are much better than that of any compositions when the composition is 75/25 (wt%).

This paper describes water circulation characteristics of a water/steam receiver at various heat fluxes. The water/steam receiver for a solar tower power system is a natural circulation type. Experimental conditions of water and steam were set at a pressure of 5 bar and temperature of $151.8^{\circ}C$. The experimental device for the water/steam receiver consisted of a steam drum, upper/lower header, riser tubes, and downcomer tube. The experiments were conducted by varying heat fluxes in terms of mass flow rate in each riser tube. However, the total mass flow rate on the riser tubes was fixed at 217.4 g/s. For the uniform heat flux, while the water temperature of the steam drum and upper header were kept at steady state, the temperature of the lower header was fluctuated. For the non-uniform heat flux, while the temperature of the steam drum was kept steady state, the temperature difference increased in the right and left side of the upper header, and the temperature of the lower header was fluctuated.

The objective of this work is to measure space and time resolved wall heat fluxes during nucleate pool boiling of R113/R11 mixtures using a microscale heater array in conjunction with a high speed CCD. The microscale heater array is constructed using VLSI techniques, and consists of 96 serpentine platinum resistance heaters on a transparent quartz substrate. Electronic feedback circuits are used to keep the temperature of each heater at a specified temperature and the variation in heating power required to keep the temperature constant is measured. Heat flux data around an isolated bubble are obtained with triggered CCD images. CCD images are obtained at a rate of 1000frames/second. The heat transfer variation vs. time on the heaters directly around the nucleation site is plotted and correlated with images of the bubble obtainedby using the high speed CCD. For both of the mixture(R11/R113) and pure system(pure R11, pure R113), the wall heat fluxes are presented and compared to find out the qualitative difference between pure and binary mixture nucleate boiling.
