  • An experimental study has been performed to investigated the forced convection heat transfer characteristics of 6 circular cylinders in staggered arrangement in a cross flow of air. The water scale deposited on condenser wall of power plant was used to investigate the effect of roughness of scaled surfaces. The relative roughness*average diameter of scale/cylinder diameter) was in a range of k/d=0.0066, 0.0111, 0.0167, 0.0222 and 0.0278. The cylinder spacings(L/d) varies from 1.5 to 4.0 where L denote the cylinder spacings along and normal to the upstream uniform flow direction. The Reynolds number was varied in a range of 10, 000$\leq$ Re $\leq$ 50,000. The local and mean Nusselt numbers were investigated as a function of scale roughness, the cylinder spacing and Reynolds number. The results are compared with those of clean cylinder and inline tube bank, subsequently the mean fouling resistance over the entire circumference was estimated from those results as a function of scale roughness, the cylinder spacing and Reynolds number.

  • Convenient analytical tools for evaluation of the aperiodic and the fluctuating instabilities of the passive residual heat removal system (PRHRS) of an integral reactor are developed and results are discussed from the viewpoint of the system design. First, a static model for the aperiodic instability using the system hydraulic loss relation and the downcomer feedwater heating equations is developed. The calculated hydraulic relation between the pressure drop and the feedwater flow rate shows that several static states can exist with various numbers of water-mode feedwater module pipes. It is shown that the most probable state can exist by basic physical reasoning, that there is no flow rate through the steam-mode feedwater module pipes. Second, a dynamic model for the fluctuating instability due to steam generation retardation in the steam generator and the dynamic interaction of two compressible volumes, that is, the steam volume of the main steam pipe lines and the gas volume of the compensating tank is formulated and the D-decomposition method is applied after linearization of the governing equations. The results show that the PRHRS becomes stabilized with a smaller volume compensating tank, a larger volume steam space and higher hydraulic resistance of the path $a_{ct}$. Increasing the operating steam pressure has a stabilizing effect. The analytical model and the results obtained from this study will be utilized for PRHRS performance improvement.

  • Aeronautics engine cooling is one of the biggest problems that engineers have tried to solve since the beginning of human flight. Systems like radiators should solve this purpose and they have been studied extensively and various solutions have been found to aid the heat dissipation in the engine zone. Special interest has been given to air coolers in order to guide the air flow on engine and lower the high temperatures achieved by the engine in flow conditions. The aircraft companies need faster and faster tools to design their solutions so the development of tools that allow to quickly assess the effectiveness of an cooling system is appreciated. This paper tries to develop a methodology capable of providing such support to companies by means of some application examples. In this work the development of a new methodology for the analysis and the design of oil cooling systems for aerospace applications is presented. The aim is to speed up the simulation of the oil cooling devices in different operative conditions in order to establish the effectiveness and the critical aspects of these devices. Steady turbulent flow simulations are carried out considering the air as ideal-gas with a constant-averaged specific heat. The heat exchanger is simulated using porous media models. The numerical model is first tested on Piaggio P180 considering the pressure losses and temperature increases within the heat exchanger in the several operative data available for this device. In particular, thermal power transferred to cooling air is assumed equal to that nominal of real heat exchanger and the pressure losses are reproduced setting the viscous and internal resistance coefficients of the porous media numerical model. To account for turbulence, the k-${\omega}$ SST model is considered with Low- Re correction enabled. Some applications are then shown for this methodology while final results are shown in terms of pressure, temperature contours and streamlines.

  • The thermal performance of a flat evaporator for capillary pumped loop (CPL) applications was investigated. Two to four layers of coarse wire screen wicks were placed onto the heated surface to provide irregular passages for vapor flow. The evaporator and condenser were separated by a distance of 1.2 m and connected by individual liquid and vapor lines. The wall material was copper and the working fluid was ethanol. The experimental facility utilized a combination of capillary and gravitational forces for liquid return, and distribution over the evaporator surface. The tubing used for vapor and liquid lines was 9.35 mm or less in diameter and heat was removed from the condenser by convection of air. A heat flux of up to $4.9{\times}10^4$ $W/m^2$ was applied to a flat evaporator having dimensions of 100 mm by 200 mm, 20 mm thick. The thermal resistance of the system as well as the temperature characteristics of the system was investigated as the evaporator heat flux and the condenser cooling capacity varied. The performance of the evaporator and effect of condenser cooling capacity were analyzed and discussed.

  • Thermal performance of louver fin and plate fin in a thermoelectric cooling system with a duct-flow type fan arrangement is analytically evaluated. The thermoelectric cooling system consists of a thermoelectric module and two heat exchanger fins. The analytic results show that the optimized louver fin has lower thermal resistance than plate fin. The COP and heat absorbed rate of the thermoelectric cooling system with optimized louver fins are 10.3% and 5.8% higher than optimized plate fins, respectively.

  • To attain power generation with body heat, the thermal resistance matched design of the thermoelectric generator was the principal factor which was not critical in the case of thermoelectric generator for the waste heat generation. The dimension of thermoelectric legs and the number of thermoelectric leg-pairs dependent output power performances of the thermoelectric generator on the human wrist condition was simulated using 1-dimensional approximated heat flow equations with the temperature dependent material coefficients of the constituent materials and the dimension of the substrate. With the optimum thermoelectric generator design, thermoelectric generator modules were fabricated by using newly developed fabrication processes, which is mass production possible. The electrical properties and the output power characteristics of the fabricated thermoelectric modules were characterized by using a home-made test set-up. The output voltage of the designed thermoelectric generator were a few tens of millivolts and its output power was several hundreds of microwatts under the conditions at the human wrist. The measured output voltage and power of the fabricated thermoelectric generator were slightly lower than those of the designed thermoelectric generator due to several reasons.

  • Reinforced concrete (RC) shield tunnel lining must be designed for fireproof performance because the lining is sometimes exposed to very high temperature due to traffic accidents. Both experimental and numerical studies are carried out to evaluate fire resistance performance of precast RC tunnel lining systems. In the experimental studies, six full-scale precast RC tunnel segments are exposed to fire in order to examine the influence of various parameters on the fire resistance performance of precast RC tunnel lining. We used the temperature curve of the RABT criteria, which are severe conditions of fire temperatures. The fire test showed that the explosive spalling was not observed by substituting concrete to PP fiber reinforced concrete. A transient heat flow analysis was carried out in consideration of the material properties that change with temperature, and the results showed good agreement with the test results.

  • This work studies qualitative thermal characteristics of PCM cold storage medium container and its surrounding streams. Experimental parameters are initial PCM temperature and cold water flow rate. A mathematical modeling was establised to estimate temperature distribution and the cooling process. We found that the phase-change temperatures of PCM varies from 6 to $8^{\circ}C$ which is constant for other materials and that the dominant heat transfer resistance is that on the container side taking about 3/4 of the total resistance. The one dimensional mathematical model predicts experimental data quit well.
