In the present study, we used a loop thermosyphon heat exchanger consisting of condensers with internal fins and external plate fins which are 480 mm wide, 68 mm long, and 1,000 mm high. The heat transfer pipes in the heat exchanger were 15 mm in diameter and 1,000 mm in length, and 98 heat transfer pipes were installed in the heat exchanger. According to the experimental results, as the spaces between the internal discontinuous pins decreased, the frequency of pressure drops increased and changes in temperature at the outlet of the condenser were shown to be a little smaller. Therefore, we can see that as the spaces between internal discontinuous pins decreased, the heat transfer performance increased. For the loop heat pipe heat exchanger consisting of a condenser with internal and plate fins, as the temperature of the air flowing into the condenser increased, the condensation heat transfer rate also increased, and as the condenser refrigerant inflow temperature increased, the condensation heat transfer rate increased as well.
This research focused on the multi-pass heat exchanger using the minichannel possessing the spring fin. An air-water was used as working fluid. The characteristics of liquid single phase heat transfer were verified. The compact heat exchanger (heat transfer area density : ${\beta}=2,146 m^2/m^3$), based on the shape of header(Top combining header), 63 minichannels ($D_i$ : 1.4 mm, L : 0.25 m) and the air side adopting the copper wire spring fin, was fabricated. The heat transfer area density of the air side was improved up to 161% when compared with the conventional fin-tube heat exchanger that adopts the heat transfer tube with the inner diameter of 5 mm. With regard to heat transfer performance, heat transfer rate per unit volume increased up to 142% when compared with the fin-tube heat exchanger adopting the heat transfer tube with the inner diameter of 5 mm.
In this study, the numerical process for analyzing the automotive louver fin heat exchanger was developed with a 3D microscopic and semi-microscopic analysis. In the microscopic analysis, the simulation with the detailed meshes was performed for obtaining the characteristics of the heat exchanger. From this simulation, the numerical correlations of the heat transfer and flow friction were obtained. In the semi-microscopic analysis, the Semi-microscopic Heat Exchanger (SHE) method, which is characterized by a conjugate heat transfer and porous media analysis was used with the numerical correlation from the microscopic analysis. This analysis predicted the flow and heat transfer characteristics of the louver fin heat exchanger in the wind tunnel and vehicle. In the design of the louver fin heat exchanger, this numerical process can predict the performance and characteristic of the louver fin heat exchanger.
Application of geothermal energy in buildings has been gaining popularity as it provides the benefits of both heating and cooling a building. Among the various types of geothermal energy systems, ground-coupled heat pump system is the most commonly applied one in South Korea. A ground heat exchanger plays an important role as a heat source in winter and a heat sink in summer. For the stable operation of a ground-coupled heat pump system, a ground heat exchanger should be sized so that it provides sufficient heating and cooling energy. Heating and cooling energies generated in ground heat exchangers mainly depend on the temperature difference between the heating medium in ground heat exchangers and the surrounding ground. In addition, the performance of ground heat exchangers influences the change in ground temperature. Therefore, it is necessary to consider this interrelation between the change in the ground temperature and the performance of ground heat exchanger for an accurate estimation of its performance. However, previous thermal analysis models for ground heat exchangers are not competent enough to allow a complete understanding of this interrelation. Therefore, this study proposes a three-dimensional equivalent, transient ground heat exchanger analysis model. First, a previous thermal analysis model for ground heat exchangers, including an analytical model, a g-function, and a numerical model are analyzed. Next, to overcome the limitations of the previous models, a three-dimensional equivalent, transient ground heat exchanger model is proposed. Finally, this study validated the proposed model with the measurement data of the thermal response test, sandbox test, and TRNSYS DST model. All validation results showed a good agreement. These findings helped us to investigate the thermal performance of ground heat exchangers more accurately than the analytical models, and faster than the numerical models. Furthermore, the proposed model contributes to the design of ground heat exchangers by considering the different operation conditions of buildings.
This paper proposes a mathematical model for predicting the frosting performance on a fin-tube heat exchanger. The model consists of empirical correlations of average heat transfer coefficients for the plate and tube surfaces and a diffusion equation inside the frost layer. The numerical results are compared with experimental data for the frost thickness, the frosting rate and the heat transfer rate to validate the proposed model. The results are in good agreement with the experimental data, and show that this model can be applied to predict frosting performance of common fin-tube heat exchanger.
A semi-closed loop ground heat exchanger is proposed and its performance is compared through the measuring the effective thermal conductivity of the ground. In-situ tests based on the line source model are carried out to evaluate the thermal characteristics of each ground heat exchanger which has different penetration water flow rate. The test results show the increasing effective thermal conductivity of ground as the penetration water flow rate(PWFR) is increased. Therefore, the higher thermal performance of the proposed semi-closed ground heat exchanger can be expected.
Recently, many researchers have studied the performance of the transcritical $CO_2$ refrigeration cycle in order to improve the system efficiency. In this study, the length of IHX in the $CO_2$ ejector cycle was varied so as to evaluate the performance improvement. As a result, compressor work and cooling capacity was increased by 3% and 5% as the length of internal heat exchanger was changed from 3 m to 15 m. The best COP was appeared at internal heat exchanger length of 12 m, and it was 3.01. Besides, the length of internal heat exchanger has a big effect to pressure lift ratio and entrainment ratio in the ejector $CO_2$ cycle and it may be changed with operating conditions and system specifications.

The performance of heat exchanger using oscillating heat pipe (OHP) for low temperature waste heat recovery was evaluated. OHP used in this study was made from low finned copper tubes connected by many turns to become the closed loop of serpentine structure. The OHP heat exchanger was formed into shell and tube type. R-22 and R-141b were used as the working fluids of OHP with a fill ratio of 40 vol.%. Water was used as the working fluid of shell side. As the experimental parameters, the inlet temperature difference between heating and cooling water and the mass velocity of water were changed. The mass velocity of water was changed from 30 kg/$m^2$s to 92 kg/$m^2$s. The experimental results showed that the heat recovery rate linearly increased as the mass velocity and the inlet temperature difference of water increased. Finally, the performance of OHP heat exchanger was evaluated by $\varepsilon$-NTU method. It was found that the effectiveness would be 80% if NTU were about 1.5.
Condensation heat transfer experiments were conducted with the oblong shell and plate heat exchanger without oil in a refrigerant loop using R-l34a, R-407C and R-410A. An experimental refrigerant loop has been developed to measure the condensation heat transfer coefficient h$_{r}$ and frictional pressure drop $\Delta$p$_{f}$ of the various refrigerants in a vertical oblong shell and plate heat exchanger. The effects of the refrigerant mass flux(40∼80kg/$m^2$s), average heat flux(4∼8kW/$m^2$), refrigerant saturation temperature(30∼4$0^{\circ}C$) and vapor quality of refrigerants on the measured data were explored in detail. Similar to the case of a plate heat exchanger, even at a very low Reynolds number, the flow in the oblong shell and plate heat exchanger remains turbulent. A comparison of the performance of the various refrigerants revealed that R-410A had the highest heat transfer performance followed by R-l34a, and R-407C had the lowest performance of the refrigerants tested. The pressure drops were also reported in this paper. The pressure drops for R-410A were approximately 45% lower than those of R-l34a. R-407C had 30% lower pressure drops than R-l34a. Experimental results were compared with several correlations which predicted condensation heat transfer coefficients and frictional pressure drops. Comparison with the experimental data showed that the previously proposed correlations gave unsatisfactory results. Based on the present data, empirical correlations of the condensation heat transfer coefficient and the friction factor were proposed.tor were proposed.sed.
Since a typical plate heat exchanger is made up of a huge number of unitary cells, it may be impossible to predict the aero-thermal performance of the full scale heat exchanger through three-dimensional numerical simulation due to the enormous amount of computing resources and time required. In the present study, a simple flow-network model using the friction factor correlation and a thermal-network model based on the effectiveness-number of transfer units (${\varepsilon}$-NTU) method has been developed. The complicated flow pattern inside the cross-corrugated heat exchanger has been modeled into flow and thermal networks. Using this model, the heat transfer between neighboring streams can be considered, and the pressure drop and the heat transfer rate of full-scale heat exchanger matrix are calculated. In the calculation, the aero-thermal performance of each unitary cell of the heat exchanger matrix was evaluated using correlations of the Fanning friction factor f and the Nusselt number Nu, which were calculated by unitary-cell CFD model.
