Recently, utilization of building foundations as ground-coupled heat exchangers has attracted much attention because they reduce the cost and enhance the heat transfer. The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of energy-slab ground-coupled heat exchanger installed in a commercial building. In order to demonstrate the energy transfer characteristics of the energy-slab, experiments were conducted from October 2010 to September 2011. The 1-year measurement results showed that the mean EWTs of brine returning from the energy-slab were $9.6^{\circ}C$ in heating season and $24.9^{\circ}C$ in cooling season, which were in a range of design target temperatures. In addition, the geothermal heat pump system with the energy-slab showed on-off operation according to the setting temperatures of secondary fluid in water storage tank. The results also showed that the energy-slab extracted heat of 198.6 kW from the ground and injected heat of 318.9 kW to the ground, respectively.

There are a variety of heat exchangers used in automobiles, such as shell and tube heat exchangers, double tube heat exchangers, and plate heat exchangers. Most of them are water-cooled to prevent engine overheating. There have been reports of corrosion damage to these heat exchangers due to continuous wetting caused by external temperature differences, road pollutants, and snow removal. In addition, galvanic corrosion, which occurs when two dissimilar materials come into contact, has been identified as a major cause. In this study, corrosion characteristics and galvanic corrosion behavior of Al alloy (AA3003, AA4045 and AA7072) used in automobile heat exchangers were analyzed. Effective clad materials for heat exchanger tubes and fins were also evaluated. It was found that AA7072 should be applied as the cladding material for fin AA3003 and that AA4045 was suitable as a cladding material for tube AA3003 because this clad materials application was the most effective clad design to delay the occurrence of pinhole in the tube. Main factors influencing galvanic corrosion dissolution were found to be galvanic corrosion potential difference and galvanic corrosion current density.

In this study, heat transfer characteristics of vertical fixed bed with air flowing through were experimentally investigated. The experiments were conducted for cases where heat was transfer steady state conditions from an immersed cylindrical heated to the surrounding fixed ved of steel balls. Based on the experimental data, the optimum conditions for heat transfer augmentation have been determined and shows in empirical forms. For the same power loss, comparison of heat transfer effect between the fixed bed and single phase forced convection device indicates that both miniaturization of heat exchange device and heat transfer augmentation at low flow velocity are possible by application of the fixed bed to heat exchangers. The present results could provide a useful design information for the heat exchangers where fixed beds are used.

This article presents a numerical and experimental investigation for the single-phase forced laminar convective heat transfer through arrays of micro-channels in micro heat exchangers to be used for cooling power-intensive semiconductor packages, especially the stacked multi-chip modules. In the numerical analysis, a parametric study was carried out for the parameters affecting the efficiency of heat transfer in the flow of coolants through parallel rectangular micro-channels. In the experimental study, the cooling performance of the micro heat exchanger was tested on prototypes of stacked multi-chip modules with difference channel dimensions. The simulation results and the experiment data were acceptably accordant within a wide range of design variations, suggesting the numerical procedure as a useful method for designing the cooling mechanism in stacked multi-chip packages and similar electronic applications.
The use of cooling towers in the air conditioning systems of buildings is increasing. In closed wet cooling towers, the heat transfer between the air and surface tubes can be composed of the sensible heat transfer and the latent heat transfer. The latent heat transfer is affected by the air and spray water. This study provides a designing methodology of heat exchanger for closed wet cooling tower. The correlation equation was derived to interpret the mass transfer coefficient based on the analogy of the heat and mass transfer and the experimental results. The results from this correlation equation showed fairly good agreement with experimental data.
Numerical analysis has been carried out to investigate air-side convective heat transfer characteristics in compact heat exchangers with continuous plate fins. Simulation results such as air flow and temperature distributions are presented, and heat transfer characteristics are compared for various inlet conditions. Results from various turbulence models are also compared for applicability. There is large difference between the local heat transfer coefficient distributions along the cylinder wall for circular tubes. Colburn j factors from the calculated results of circular and flat tubes in the heat exchangers are compared for various Reynolds number. The predicted results in this study can be applied to the optimal design of air conditioning system. with compact heat exchanger.
Mathematical modeling and performance simulation results were shown for the solar thermal storage system which used heat pipe. The thermal storage system was composed of thermal storage tank and charging/discharging heat exchanger with one by the heat pipes. Heat pipe heat exchanger was attached to system, and could carry out charging and discharging to thermal storage tank at the same time. Height of the thermal storage tank was 600 mm, and that of the charging/discharging heat exchanger was 400 mm. Length of the heat pipe was the same as the total height of thermal storage system, and outer and inner diameter were 25.4 mm(O.D.) and 21.4 mm(I.D.) respectively. Diameter of the circular was 43 mm(O.D.), and fin geometries were considered as the design parameters. High temperature phase change material(PCM), $KNO_3$ and low temperature PCM, $LINO_3$ were charged to storage tank to adjust working temperature. Total size of thermal storage system able to get heat capacity more than 500 kW was calculated and the results were shown in this study. Number of heat pipe was required more than maximum 500, and total length of thermal storage system was calculated to the more than maximum 3 m at various condition.

Rapid development of electronic technology requires small size, high density packaging and high power in the electronic devices, which results in more heat generation. Suitable heat dissipation is required to ensure the guaranteed performance and reliable operation of the current state-of-the-art electronic equipment. The aim of the present study is to find out the forced-convective thermal-hydraulic characteristics of a pin-fin heat exchanger as a candidate for cooling system of the electronic devices through the analysis and experiment. Various configuration of the pin-fin array is selected in order to find out the effect of spacing and diameter of the pin-fin on the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics. Experimental results are compared with the analyses and correlations of several researchers. Finally, the design guide are provided for the required pressure drop and/or the heat transfer characteristics of the heat exchanger.

The micro plated heat exchangers were designed to transfer more heat/volume or mass than previous heat exchangers within the context of the design constraints specified. The increase of the surface-to-volume ratio results in an increase of the interfacial area. This enhances considerably the performance of a heat exchanger. This can be an important component in a wide range of applications fuel cell, aerospace, automotive, electronic system and home heating, etc). In this study, the performance evaluation of micro plated heat exchangers under the counter flows with straight and S-shaped channel are carried out. The pressure drop as well as inlet and outlet fluid temperature were measured at steady state under various operating conditions and the total heat transfer rate were also calculated.
