A new advanced combined PVD/CVD technique of DLC film deposition has been developed. Deposition of a DLC film was carried out using a pulsed carbon arc discharge in vapor hydrocarbon atmosphere. The arc plasma enhancing CVD process promotes dramatic increase in the deposition rate and decrease of compressive stress as well as improvement of film thickness uniformity compared to that obtained with a single PVD pulsed arc process. The optical spectroscopy investigation reveals great increase in radiating components of $C_2$ Swan system molecular bands due to acetylene molecules decomposition. AFM, Raman spectroscopy, XPS and nano-indentation were used to characterize DLC films. The method ensures obtaining a new superhard DLC nano-material for deposition of protective coatings onto various industrial products including those used in medicine.
In the present study, the fluorescence behavior ova phenylethynyl-terminated imide (LaRC PETI-5) resin, a bismaleimide (BMI) resin, and various LaRC PETI-5/BMI blends with different blend compositions has been characterized as a function of heat-treatment temperature, using a steady-state fluorescence technique with a front-face illumination method far solid-state films. It is observed that there are distinguishable changes in the spectral shape, size, and position of fluorescence with varying heat-treatment temperature in the pure and blend samples. The result is qualitatively explained in terms of charge transfer complex formation as well as microenvironmental change with local mobility and viscosity occurring in the LaRC PETI-5, BMI, and their blends during the cure process. The result also implies that a steady-state fluorescence technique may be a useful tool to understand the processing conditions of polyimides and their blends in the film form on the basis of their thermo-photophysical responses.
This paper deals with the effect of laser material processing on the EMU production technique. Material processing with lasers takes advantage of all the characteristics of laser light. The high energy density and directionality achieved with lasers permits strong localized heat- or photo-treatment of materials with spatial resolution below one micrometer. The pulsed and mono-chromatic light allows the control of depth of heat treatment or selective excitation. The laser beam can be moved to process large areas, is a sterile tool and is no subject to wear and tear. Using laser processing have taken more interests in EMU production for improving the rigidity, weight reduction, crash durability, and cost savings so that their application to auto-bodies has been increased.
The mechanical and thermal load, and thermal softening occuring by the rush temperature of die, in warm and hot forging, cause wear, heat cracking and plastic deformation, etc. This paper describes the effects of solid lubricants and surface treatments for warm forging die. Because cooling effect and low friction are essential to the long life of dies, optimal surface treatments and lubricants are very important to hot and warm forging process. The main factors affecting die hardness and heat transfer, are surface treatments and lubricants, which are related to heat transfer coefficient, etc. To verify the effects, experiments are performed for heat transfer coefficient in various conditions - different initial billet temperatures and different loads. Carbonitriding and ionitriding are used as surface treatments, and oil-base and water-base graphite lubricants are used. The effects of lubricant and surface treatment for warm and hot forging die life are explained by their thermal characteristics, and the new developed technique in this study for predicting tool life can give more feasible means to improve the tool life in hot forging process.
Effect of heat-treatment on the microstructure and recrystallization behavior of pure Zr was studied. The specimens were prepared under the various annealing temperatures from $400^{\circ}C$ to $800^{\circ}C$ and times from 300 to 5000 minutes after vacuum arc remelting. The recrystallization behavior was observed by a polarized optical microscope, TEM and micro-vickers hardness tester. With increasing the annealing time, the temperature region of hardness drop moved to the lower temperature region due to the recovery and recrystallization behaviors at the lower temperature. The recrystallization of cold-worked pure Zr was completed between 450 and $600^{\circ}C$. The size of recrystallized grain increased at $700^{\circ}C$ for 600min. Activation energy(Q) of pure Zr measured by the time for constant fraction technique was 78 KJ/mol.
The effect of tempering temperature on the ultrasonic propagation velocity at SCM 440 steel quenched from $870^{\circ}C$ and $1000^{\circ}C$ has been studied by metallurgical and crystallographical observation. The measurements of ultrasonic velocity were made on the specimen by appling an immersion ultrasonic pulse-echo technique with a constant frequency of 10 MHz. The quenched microstructure of this steel was a lath martensite. As the tempering temperature was increased, the martensite was transformed into the tempered martensite composed of cementite and carbide. The ultrasonic velocity increased with increasing the tempering temperature. It was thought that these were resulted from the microstructural transformation. The change of ultrasonic propagation velocity with quenching and tempering heat treatment was resulted from microstrain due to the change of internal stress. Considering these results concerning to the change of ultrasonic propagation velocity. the phenomena of microstructural transformation were estimated. Consequently, it was thought that the degree of quenching and tempered heat treatment of steel could be nondestructively evaluated with the change of ultrasonic propagation velocity.
Laser surface hardening is an effective technique used to improve the tribological properties and also to increase the service life of automobile components such as camshafts, crankshatfs, lorry brake drums and gears. High power CO2 lasers and Nd:YAG lasers are employed for localized hardening of materials and hence are of potential application in the automobile industries. The heat is conducted rapidly into the bulk of the specimen causing self-quenching to occur and the formation of martensitic structure. In this investigation, the microstructure features occurring in Nd:YAG laser hardening SM45C steel are discussed with the use of optical microscopic and scanning electron microscopic analysis. Moreover, This paper describes the optimism of the processing parameters for maximum hardened depth of SM45C steel specimens of 3mm thickness by using CW Nd:YAG laser. Travel speed was varied from 0.6m/min to 1.0m/min. The maximum hardness and case depth fo SM45C steel are 780Hv and 0.4mm by laser hardening.
In the combustion treatment of explosive gases with a high heating value such as $H_2$ and $NH_3$ used in semiconductor and chemical processes, the heat recovery modeling and exergy analysis of the process using the Aspen Plus simulator and its thermodynamic data were performed to examine the recovery of high temperature thermal energy. The heat recovery process was analyzed through this process modeling while the exergy results clearly confirmed that the rigorous reaction mainly occurs in the condenser and the chamber. In addition, the process modeling demonstrated that approximately 95% of the exergy is destructed on the basis of the exergies injected and the exergy being exhausted. Using the exergy technique, which can quantitatively analyze the energy, we could understand the energy flow in the process and confirm that our heat recovery process was efficiently designed.
Since high-power CO$_2$ Laser can be make a high densed energy to Local processing area, manufacturing processes using the laser can be processed for very Localized areas at a very fast rate with minimal or no distortion. Accordingly, the laser has been widely used in the fields of thermal manufacturing processes such as welding, fusion cutting, grooving, and heat treatment of metals. In particular, interest in the laser heat treatment process has grown tremendously in the past few years. In this process, maintaining the uniform hardening depth is important problem to obtain good quality products and to reduce heat induced distortion and residual stress. For achieving this objective, we introduced a new design technique of a fuzzy logic controller that greatly simplified the design procedure by defining several simplified design parameters. In the design procedure, the major design parameters of the controller are characterized by identifying several common aspects. From a series of simulation results, we found that the proposed design technique can be effectively used to design of a fuzzy logic controller for the LASER surface hardening process.
To develop porous glass membranes used for a effective membrane-separation process, porous glasses and glass membranes were prepared from the sodium borosilicate parent glass by the phaseseparation technique and effects of heat-treatment and leaching conditions on their characteristics were investigated. The crack-free glass membranes could be fabricated from the 9.4 Na2-O-30.7 B2O3-59.2 SiO2-0.7 Al2O3(wt%) parent glass by heat-treatment at the lower temperature(550-570$^{\circ}C$) and for longer than 45 hrs for the phase separation, followed by leaching with 3N-HCl+60% ethylene glycol solution at 90$^{\circ}C$ over 25 hrs. Porous glasses prepared in this work showed large specific surface areas(400㎡/g) and narrow pore size distribution with the mean pore radius of 14${\AA}$ enough for the application as reverse osmosis membranes. The salt-rejection efficiency and product-flux of the glass membranes heat-treated at 570$^{\circ}C$ for 80 hrs were found to be 51.8% and 270cc/㎡. hr, respectively. This result suggests that the porous glass membranes fabricated in this study could be applied for the reverse osmosis process.
