  • Numerical and experimental studies were performed to examine the characteristics of heat and mass transfer processes for a Micro Heat Pipe(MHP) with a triangular cross-section. Solutions on mass flow rate, pressure variation, and radius of meniscus were obtained using the mathematical model developed by Faghri and Khrustalev. To obtain an increase in capillary limitation, a triangular tube with curved walls was designed and fabricated. The measurement by microscope showed that the radius at corners of the tube was ranging between 0.03-0.05mm. Performance test for MHPs using the triangular tube with curved walls proved a substantial increasement in heat transport limitation, with 4.5W and 2.0W in case of using water and ethanol as a working fluid, respectively. In the previous study by Faghri a limitation of 0.5W was reported for a water MHP with a regular triangular tube.

  • Analysis and experiment are performed to investigate the thermal performance of a heat pipe with axial grooves. The heat pipe was designed in a 6.5 mm I.D., 17 axial trapezoidal grooves. 1000 mm long tube of aluminium, and ammonia as working fluid. A mathematical equations fur heat pipe with axial grooves is formulated to obtain the capillary limitation on heat transport rate in a steady state. As a result, heat transport factor of heat pipe has the maximum at the operating temperature of 293K in 0m elevation. As the elevation of heat pipe increases. the heat transport factor of the heat pipe is reduced markedly, comparing with that of horizontal elevation of the heat pipe. It may be considered that such behavior of heat pipe is caused by the working fluid swarmed back to the condenser port due to gravity force and supercooled by a coolant of heat exchanger. Analytical results of heat transport factor are in a good agreement with those of experiment.

  • The present study was conducted to determine flooding heat transfer limitation of a two-phase closed thermosyphon using PFC as working fluid. The variables such as pipe inner diameter, working fluid property, operating temperature were examined by way of analytic method. Comparison of experimental data on flooding heat transfer limitation shows a fairly good agreement with the analytic results. An expression fur flooding maximum heat transfer rate was formulated as a function of Bond number and saturation pressure and written as follows ; $Q_{max} =0.989{\cdot}P_s^{0.286}{\cdot}Bo^{1.74}$.

  • An experimental investigation of a Reversible Loop Heat Pipe (RLHP) was conducted to determine the operating limits and performance characteristics as functions of the thermophysical parameters, the heat input, and the cooling intensity. Variations in both temperature and heat transport capacity were measured and analyzed in order to accurately evaluate the transient operating characteristics. In addition, the maximum heat transport as a function of the mean evaporator temperature, the ratio of heat transport to heater input power as a function of the mean evaporator temperature, and the overall thermal resistance as a function of the overall heat transport capacity were examined as well. Results indicated that the cooling intensity played an important role on the operating characteristics and performance limitation. The maximum heat transports corresponding to cooling intensity $72W/^{\circ}C$ and $290W/^{\circ}C$ were 446 W and 924 W, respectively. Also, observation of the startup characteristics indicated that the mean evaporator temperature should be maintained between $40^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$, and overall thermal resistance were measured as $0.02^{\circ}C/W$.

  • This paper is to research the heat transfer characteristic performance of the copper-water heat pipe with the screen wicks. Recently, the semiconductor capacity of an electronic unit has been larger, on the contrary, its size has been much smaller. As a result, a high-performance cooling system is needed. Experimental variables are inclination angles, temperatures of cooling water and the mesh number of screen wicks. The distilled water was used for the working fluid. At the inclination angle $6^{\circ}$ in top heat mode, the two layers of the 100-mesh screen wick showed the best heat transfer performance. The thermal resistance of the two layers with the 100-mesh screen was 0.7~$0.8^{\circ}C$/W.

  • In this study, analysis is made for the effects of groove shape on the thermal performance of a axial groove heat pipe. The mathematical models of two-phase flow in grooved heat pipe are presented for the capillary limitation in steady state. Generally, the heat pipe performance depends on the capillary pressure and liquid flow. The friction force of liquid flow through the groove increases with the groove width decreased, and then the capillary pressure is improved in the gas-liquid interface of groove. Therefore, the optimal groove width shaper exists for the maximum thermal performance of heat pipe. In this paper, the optimal groove shape and scale are presented by considering both capillary pressure and liquid flow.

  • The effects of an inserted coil on flow patterns and heat transport performance for a horizontal rotating heat pipe have been studied experimentally. Especially, the present study is to see an internally inserted helical coil inside a RHP would lead to the same kind of results as internal fins. Visualization test conducted for an acryl tube, charged water with at a volumetric rate of 20%. When the flow kept pool regime at a low RPM(less than 1,000 RPM), the movement of coil forced the water to flow in axial direction. But this pumping effect of coil disappeared, when the pool regime changed to annular one which could be created by increasing RPM. The pumping effects for RHP with an inserted coil resulted enhancement both in condensation heat transfer coefficient and heat transport limitation, as obtained in case of using internal fins. But all these effects became negligible in the range of higher RPM(above 1,000∼1,200) with the transition of flow regime to annular flow.

  • A two-phase closed thermosyphon was one of the most effective devices in the removing heat because of its simple structure, thermal diode characteristics, wide operating temperature range and so on. In this study, a two-phase closed thermosyphon(working fluid PFC(C6F14), container copper(inner grooved surface)) was fabricated with a reservoir which can change the fill charge ratio. The experiments were performed in the range of 50~600W heat flow rate and 10~70% fill charge ratio. The results were compared with some correlations that were presented by Rohsenow and Immura et al. in the evaporator, by Nusselt, Gross and Uehara et al. in the condenser and by Cohen and Bayley, Wallis, Kutateladze and Faghri et al. in heat transfer limitation etc.. The heat transfer coefficient at the evaporator increased with the input power. However the effect of the fill charge ratio was nearly negligible. At the condenser, it showed an opposite trend to the evaporator and with increase of the fill charge ratio, showed some enhancement of heat transfer. The heat transport limitation was occurred by the dry-out limitation for small fill charge ratio(10%) and presented about 100W. For the case of large fill charge ratio(Ψ$\geq$40%), it was occurred by the flooding limitation at about 500W.
