The effect of oil on convective boiling of R-123 in an enhanced tube bundle is experimentally investigated at $26.7^{\circ}C$ saturation temperature. The enhanced tube had pores (0.23 mm diameter) and connecting gaps (0.07 mm width), which had been optimized using pure R-123. The effects of oil concentration (0 to 5%), heat flux (10 to $40\;kW/m^2$), mass velocity (8 to $26\;kg/m2^s$) and vapor quality are investigated. The oil significantly reduces the bundle boiling heat transfer coefficient. With 1% oil, the reduction is approximately 35%. Further addition of oil further reduces the heat transfer coefficient. The data are also compared with the pool boiling counterpart. The reduction in the heat transfer coefficient is smaller in a bundle (convective boiling) than in a pool (single-tube pool boiling), with larger difference at a smaller heat flux. Similar to pure R-123 case, the effects of mass velocity and vapor quality are negligible for the convective boiling of R-123/oil mixture.

Flexible two-phase thermosyphons are devices that can transfer large amounts of heat flux with boiling and condensation of working fluid resulting from small temperature differences. A flexible two-phase thermosyphon consists of a evaporator, an insulation unit, and a condenser. The working fluid inside the evaporator is evaporated by heating the evaporator in the lower part of the flexible two-phase thermosyphon and the evaporated steam rises to the condenser in the upper part to transfer heat in response to the cooling fluid outside the tube. The resultant condensed working fluid flows downward along the inside surface of the tube due to gravity. These processes form a cycle. Using R134a refrigerant as the working fluid of a loop type flexible two-phase thermosyphon heat exchanger, an experiment was conducted to analyse changes in boiling heat transfer performances according to differences in the temperature of the oil for heating of the evaporator, the temperature variations of the refrigerant, and the mass flows. According to the results of the present study, the circulation rate of the refrigerant increased and the pressure in the evaporator also increased proportionally as the temperature of the oil in the evaporator increased. In addition, the heat transfer rate of the boiler increased as the temperature of the oil in the evaporator increased.
Angular contact ball bearings are mainly used in the spindle, which requires high speed and stiffness. The heat generation is studied by experiments and simulations using a pair of angular contact ball bearings. The temperature variation of inner and outer races and the temperature increment distribution are measured by using thermocouples for the rotational speed, preload, viscosity of lubricant. The measured values from experiments are used to estimate the heat conduction rate. The method of oil-air lubrication is used for the experiment. The amount of conduction heat transfer to the test spindle and the convection heat transfer coefficients long the spindle are computed by using inverse method with temperature increment distribution. Total heat generation rate is estimated with the heat partition rate which is calculated from temperatures of inner and outer races. In addition, the empirical factor of oil-air lubrication method for Palmgren's heat generation model is suggested. The empirical friction coefficients, which are obtained from the experiments, depend on the preload condition, and can give us more accurate estimation of the heat generation in ball bearings.

The information on the heat transfer characteristics, flow pattern and pressure drop, are very important for the desing of general heat exchanger, refrigerating system, air conditioning system and energy recovery system. In these systems, water or lubricating oil contained in working fluid affects greatly the flow and heat transfer condition and this phenomena must be considered in the practical design. An experiment has been performed for studying the flow and heat transfer characteristics of the forced convective horizontal flow of R-113 under the range of the liquid single phase state to the boiling flow state. Basic experimental results are obtained in the case that water or lubricating oil does not contaminate in the test fluid. Experimental results are as follows; (1) The local heat transfer coefficients in the nucleate boiling region and transition boiling region are almostly ten times as large as that of liquid single phase flow. (2) The measured heat transfer coefficient in the present experimental range is relatively agreed well with the predicted value from the various experimental results for the boiling flow.

Recently, CNC lathe is in need of higher speed for precision works. So more intensive and compact heat exchanger is necessary to cool down the heat in short time from drills and works during high speed working. In this study, to increase heat transfer coefficient per unit volume, inner groove tube is designed and compact oil cooler, 57% volume of conventional type, is manufactured. The heat transfer performance is experimented and is compared with the performance of conventional type.

A highly compact and thermally efficient water cooled oil cooler for automotive use without offset strip fin and casing is developed in this study. The study result has shown that eliminating the fin and casing in the oil cooler the manufacturing process and cost and can be simplified and reduced greatly without sacrificing the thermal capacity. The oil cooler developed in the study uses the dimply type heat transfer core element design instead of offset strip fin and eliminates the outer casing for coolant water flow by applying specially made parallel loop flow design. In the study the thermal design program for the present oil cooler also was developed and validated experimentally.

Surface modification technique enabling the control of condensation provides various benefit in various engineering systems, such as heat transfer, desalination, power plants, and so on. In this study, lubricant oil-impregnation into Teflon-coated nanoporous anodic oxide layer of aluminum to enhance a de-wetting and mobility of water droplet on surface. Due to the surface treatment improving water-repellency, the condensation mode is changed to dropwise, thus the frequency of sliding condensed water droplet on surface is increased. For these reasons, the surface of oil-impregnated Teflon-coated nanoporous anodic aluminum oxide shows significantly enhanced condensation heat transfer compared to bare aluminum surface. In addition, the porosity of anodic aluminum oxide affected the mobility of water droplet even with oil-impregnation and Teflon-coating, indicating that the optimization of porous structure of anodic oxide is required for maximizing the condensation heat transfer.

In this work, the experimental investigation was carried out to evaluate the heat transfer performance on the shell side of shell-and-plate finned tube heat exchanger with three different tube numbers(9, 13 and 19). Oil flowing on the shell side was cooled by cold water flowing inside the tubes. A shell-and-tube heat exchanger of an oil cooler consisted of one shell pass and two tube passes with the inner tube diameter of 8.82 mm and the tube length of 575 mm. Mass flow rate was varied from 1.2 to $6.0\;m^3/h$ for oil and from 0.6 to $3.0\;m^3/h$ for cold water, respectively. From the experiment of shell-and-plate finned tube heat exchanger, the overall heat transfer coefficient of heat exchanger with 9 tubes was compared with that of 13 and 19 tubes. It was found that the heat transfer coefficients in shell side of heat exchanger with 9 plate finned tubes showed averagely 1.8 times and 2.3 times higher than those of 13 and 19 tubes, respectively.

It has been argued that the use of plastics can cause problems during design and manufacture owing to their low strength, relatively poor thermal conductivity and large thermal expansion. However, the advantages of plastics e.g., corrosion resistance, low cost, curtailment of weight, design flexibility etc., can compensate abundantly for the disadvantages. This study analyzes and compares the heat transfer performance characteristics of automotive compact oil cooler composed of plastic tube bundle with conventional metal oil cooler on the same core area basis as diameter, tube thickness, number of tube or tube arrangement varies. The performance analyses are accomplished by use of computational fluid dynamics program Fluent 6.2, which is verified and compared with the results of performance tests. The result of analyses is coincided with that of experiments. Flow pattern at air side according to tube arrangement is dominant factor which affects heat dissipation in case of similar total heat transfer surface area.

In order to investigate the effects of PAG oil concentration on heat transfer performance and pressure drop during gas cooling process of $CO_2$, the experiments on fin-tube heat exchanger of $CO_2$ heat pump were performed. The experimental apparatus consists of a gas cooler, a heater, a chiller, a mass flow meter, a pump and measurement system. Experiments were conducted in various experimental conditions, which were inlet temperature($110^{\circ}C$), mass flow rates (50, 55, 60, 65, 70 g/s) and PAG oil concentration(0 to 2.6 wt%). Heat transfer rate decreased with the increase of the oil concentration and the decrease of inlet pressure. And pressure drop increased with the increase of the oil concentration and mass flow rate of refrigerant. The COP reduction by deterioration of gas cooler performance with oil concentration was analyzed. When inlet pressure of gas cooler is 100 bar, the COP reduction was estimated by 6% under 1 wt% of oil concentration.
