Numerical simulations and experiment of a hydrodynamic and thermally developed turbulent flow through square ducts (3.0 ${\times}$ 3.0 cm) with twisted tape inserts and with twisted tape inserts plus interrupted ribs are conducted to investigate regionally averaged heat transfer and friction factors. Turbulent swirl flows having Reynolds numbers ranging from 8,900 to 29,000, a rib height-to-channel hydraulic diameter(e/D$_h$) of 0.067, and a length-to-hydraulic diameter(L/D$_h$) of 30, are considered. The square ribs are arranged to follow the trace of the twisted tape and along the flow direction defined as axial interrupted ribs. The twisted tape has 0.1 mm thick carbon steel sheet with diameter of 2.8 cm, length of 90 cm, and 2.5 turns. Each wall is composed of isolated aluminum sections, and two cases of surface heating are set. The results show that uneven surface heating enhances the heat transfer coefficient over uniform heating conditions, and square ducts with twisted tape inserts plus interrupted ribs produces the best overall transfer performance.
Heat transfer characteristics of low temperature latent heat storage systems have been examined for the circular finned and unfinned tubes using Na$_2$B$_4$O$\_$7/10H$_2$O as a phase change material. In order to reduce the supercooling of PCM, 3 wt% of Na$_2$B$_4$O$\_$7/10H$_2$O was added as the nucleating agent and 2.2 wt% of acrylic acid sodium sulfate was used as the thickener. The heat storage vessel has dimension of 530 mm height, 74 mm 1.D. and inner heat transfer tube is 480 mm height and 13.5 mm O.D. Water was employed as the heat transfer fluid. During the heat recovery experiment, the heat recovery rate was affected by the flow rates and inlet temperature of heat transfer fluid. The enhancement of heat transfer by fins over the unfinned tube system was found to be negligible in the thin finned tube systems, whereas the heat transfer coefficient in the thick finned tube system is approximately 60% higher than that in the unfinned lobe system. The experimentally determined heat transfer coefficient for the unfinned tube and thick finned tube systems are 150-260 W/㎡$^{\circ}C$ and 230-530 W/㎡$^{\circ}C$, respectively. The fin efficiency based on the heat transfer coefficient and area increased by fins was found to be 0.05 and 0.26 for the thin and the thick finned tube systems.

Phenomena of direct contact condensation (DCC) heat transfer between steam and water are characterized by the transport of heat and mass through a moving steam/water interface. Application of the phenomena of DCC heat transfer to the engineering industries provides some advantageous features in the viewpoint of enhanced heat transfer. This study proposes a simple condensation model on the steam jets discharging into subcooled water from a single horizontal pipe for the prediction of the steam jet shapes. The analysis model was derived from the mass, momentum and energy equations as well as a thermal balance equation with condensing characteristics at the steam/water interface for the axi-symmetric coordinates. The extremely large heat transfer rate at the steam/water interface was reflected in the effective thermal conductivity estimated from the previous experimental results. The analysis results were compared with the experimental ones. The analysis model predicted that the steam jet shape (i. e. radius and length) was increasing as the steam mass flux and the pool temperature were increasing, which was similar in trend to that observed in the experiment.
The technology of Semi-Solid Forging(SSF) has been actively developed to fabricate near net shape products using light and hardly formable materials. Generally the SSF process is composed of slug is compressed during a certain holding time in order to completely fill the die cavity and accelerate the solidification rate. The decision of compression time is important since it can affect microstructural characteristics, mechanical properties and shape of products.. In order to determine it proper overall heat transfer coefficient between the slug and dies should be investigated. This paper presents the procedure to find the overall heat transfer coefficient between the slug and dies by nonlinear optimization of temperature and solid fraction for a cylindrical slug at compression step in closed-die semi-solid forging. In finite ele-ment heat transfer analysis release of latent heat during solidification was considered. The influence of the predicted compression time on miscrostructural characteristics mechanimcal properties and shape of products is finally investigated by experiment.

The technology of Semi-Solid Forging (SSF) has been actively developed to fabricate near-net-shape products using light and hardly formable materials. Generally, the SSF process is composed of slug heating, forming, compression -holding and ejecting step. After forming step in SSF, the slug is compressed during a certain holding time in order to be completely filled in the die cavity and be accelerated in solidification rate. The compression holding time that can affect microstructural characteristics and shape of products is important to make decision, where it is necessary to find overall heat transfer coefficient properly which has large effect on heat transfer between slug and die. This paper presents the procedure to predict compression holding time of obtaining the final shaped part with information of temperature and solid fraction for a cylindrical slug at compression holding step in closed-die compression process using heat transfer analysis considering latent heat by means of finite element method. The influence of the predicted compression holding time on microstructural characteristics of products is finally investigated by experiment.

We have assessed the applicability of the thermal-hydraulic system analysis code, SPACE, to a small modular reactor called SMART. For the assessment, the experimental data from a scale-down integral-test facility, SMART-ITL, were used. It was conformed that the SPACE code unrealistically calculates the safety injection flow rate through the CMT and SIT during a small-break loss-of-coolant experiment. This unrealistic behavior was due to the overprediction of interfacial heat transfer at the steam-water interface in a vertically stratified flow in the tanks. In this study, a special thermal-hydraulic component model has been developed to realistically calculate the interfacial heat transfer when a strong non-equilibrium two-phase flow is formed in the CMT or SIT. Additionally, we developed a special heat structure model, which analytically calculates the heat transfer from the hot steam to the cold tank wall. The combination of two models for the tank are called the special component model. We assessed it using the SMART-ITL passive safety injection system (PSIS) test data. The results showed that the special component model well predicts the transient behaviors of the CMT and SIT.
Both theoretical and experimental investigations were conducted to analyze defrosting behavior of a window heater operating in the low outdoor temperature($-20^{\circ}C$). To achieve this purpose, first a warm-chamber experiment($23^{\circ}C$) was performed to measure inner and outer surface temperature of the rear window(heated by the electric heater supplying 195 W) as functions of both time and position. Secondly, a cold chamber experiment was made to continuously record defrosting process of the frosted window. From the comparisons of the two experimental results, it was found that there was a similarity between the spatial distributions of both temperature and remaining frost. Thus, the temperature data from the warm-chamber experiments can be utilized to predict an expected zone covered with remaining frosts, and this approach can also be adopted in the inspection process in order to economically guarantee optimized performance of the window heater. Finally, an analytical model based on one-dimensional, steady-state heat transfer theories was proposed and successfully predicted the outer surface temperature of the rear window surrounded by cold air($-20^{\circ}C$) for the given operating conditions(heater power, inside and outside heat transfer coefficients, and surrounding air temperature, etc.).

The turbulent heat transfer from a round oblique impinging jet on a concave surface were experimentally investigated. The transient measurement method using liquid crystal was used in this study. In this measurement, a preheated wall was suddenly exposed to an impinging jet while recording the response of liquid crystals to measure surface temperature. The Reynolds numbers were 11000, 23000 and 50000, nozzle-to-surface distance ratio was from 2 to 10 and the surface angles were a =$0^{\circ}\;15^{\circ},\;30^{\circ}and\;40^{\circ}$. Correlations of the stagnation point Nusselt numbers with Reynolds number, jet-to-surface distance ratio and dimensionless surface angle, which account for the surface inclined angle, are presented. The maximum Nusselt numbers, in this experiment, occurred in the direction of upstream. The displacement of the maximum Nusselt number from the stagnation point increases with increasing surface angle or decreasing nozzle-to-surface distance. In this experiment, the maximum displacement is about 0.7 times of the jet nozzle diameter when surface curvature, D/d is 10.
This paper presents the research activities performed to date for the development of a supercritical pressure water-cooled reactor (SCWR) in Korea. The research areas include a conceptual design of an SCWR with an internal flow recirculation, a reactor core conceptual design, a heat transfer test with supercritical $CO_2$, an adaptation of an existing safety analysis code to the supercritical pressure condition, and an evaluation of candidate materials through a corrosion study. Methods to reduce the cladding temperature are introduced from two different perspectives, namely, thermal-hydraulics and core neutronics. Briefly described are the results of an experiment on the heat transfer at a supercritical pressure, an experiment that is essential for the analysis of the subchannels of fuel assemblies and the analysis of a system safety. An existing system code has been adapted to SCWR conditions, and the process of a first-hand validation is presented. Finally, the corrosion test results of the candidate materials for an SCWR are introduced.
The purpose of this research is to study the characteristics of heat transfer in composite rotary heat pipe as modeled turbine rotating by a finite element analysis and experiment. Nu number, Re number, Pr number and dimensionless condensate layer thickness by thermal input and revolutions per minute were given as analysis factors. The comparison between calculated and experimental data showed similar tendency. Therefore the analysis method may be useful to predict the performance of composite heat pipe. The resistance on heat pipe showed the best effect of heat transfer by film condensation, by decreasing film condensation, the heat transfer rate from condenser was increased rapidly. The dimensionless condensate layer thickness according to Re number at given Pr number showed constant values, the dimensionless condensate layer thickness is proportionate to the square root of inverse of revolution number per minute. In this study Nu=A$({\delta}({\omega}/v)^{-1/2}Re^B)$ is used to the convection heat transfer coefficient and A=0.963, B=0.5025 were obtained as analysis predicts.
