  • Alumina substrate was sealed by PbO-ZnO-$B_2O_3$glass using microwave heating. The crystallization behaviour of sealing glass and the state of sealing joint were investigated and were compared with those of conventionally sealed one. Compared to the conventional one, the microwave heat-treated sample had well-grown $\textrm{PbTiO}_3$ crystals and high degree of crystallinity even though it had shorter heat-treatment time and lower heat-treatment temperature. Also, the microwave sealed sample exhibited relatively a good sealing state and almost same bending strength.

  • Perlite is one of the major constituents of the radioactive thermal insulation waste (RTIW) originating from nuclear power plants and, for proper waste management, a significant reduction in its volume is required prior to disposal. In this work, the volume reduction of perlite is studied by high-temperature treatment method with using K2CO3 as a flux. The perlite is ground with 0-30 wt% K2CO3, and differential thermal analysis/thermogravimetric analysis is used to monitor the glass transition temperature (Tg) and weight loss. The Tg varied between ~772.2 and 837.1 ℃ with the minima at ~643.5 ℃ with the addition of ~10 wt% K2CO3. It is observed that compared to the pure perlite the volume reduction ratio (VRR) increases with the addition of K2CO3. The VRR of 11.20 is observed with 5 wt% K2CO3 at 700 ℃, as compared to VRR of 5.56 without K2CO3 at 700 ℃. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy are used to characterize perlite samples heat-treated without/with 5 wt% K2CO3 at 700 ℃. Moreover, the atomic absorption spectroscopy indicates that the proposed heat-treatment procedure is able to completely retain the radionuclides present in the perlite RTIW.

  • Ni-doped $CoSb_3$ was prepared by the encapsulated induction melting and hot pressing, and its doping effects on the thermoelectric properties were investigated. Single phase $\delta-CoSb_3$ was successfully obtained by the subsequent heat treatment at 773K for 24 hours. Nickel atoms acted as electron donors by substituting cobalt atoms. Thermoelectric properties were remarkably improved by the appropriate doping.

  • The presence of a residual stress in a thin film affects the properties and performances of the film, so the study of stress in a film must be very important. In this study, therefore, considering the characteristics of PECVD process, it was discussed that the residual stress, measured by $sin^2{\Psi}$ method, fo TiN films deposited on substrates with different TECs (thermal expansion coefficients) changed with film thickness. As a results, it was obtained that the residual stress of TiN film was compressive stress about all kinds of substrates and increased with film thickness. Also, the compressive residual stresses of TiN films increased in Si, Ti, STS304 order. According to the above results, we confirmed that the changes of residual stress of TiN film with substrates were due to the thermal stress originated form the difference in the TECs of the film and substrates, and that the intrinsic stress had dominating effect on the residual stress of TiN film deposited by PECVD. And in this study, the intrinsic stress of TiN film was compressive stress in spite of the Zone 1 structure. It is due to the entrapment of impurities in grain boundary or void.

  • This study is aimed to investigate changes of combustion characteristics and heat efficiency when syngas from gasification process using low-rank fuel such as waste and/or biomass is applied partially to an industrial boiler. An experimental study on syngas co-combustion was performed in a 0.7 MW (1 ton steam/hr) water tube boiler using heavy oil as a main fuel. Three kinds of syngas were used as an alternative fuel: mixture gas of pure carbon monoxide and hydrogen, syngas of low calorific value generated from an air-blown gasification process, and syngas of high calorific value produced from an oxygen-blown gasification process. Effects of co-combustion ratio (0~20%) for each syngas on flue gas composition were investigated through syngas injection through the nozzles installed in the side wall of the boiler and measuring $O_2$, $CO_2$, CO and NOx concentrations in the flue gas. When syngas co-combustion was applied, injected syngas was observed to be burned completely and NOx concentration was decreased because nitrogen-containing-heavy oil was partially replaced by the syngas. However, heat efficiency of the boiler was observed to be decreased due to inert compounds in the syngas and the more significant decrease was found when syngas of lower calorific value was used. However, the decrease of the efficiency was under 10% of the heat replacement by syngas.

  • An analysis of a loss of residual heat removal system (RHRS) event during midloop operation after reactor shutdown was performed using the RELAP5/MOD3 thermal-hydraulic computer code. The experimental data of a 5% cold leg break test conducted at the ROSA-IV Large Scale Test Facility (LSTF) to simulate a main coolant pump shaft seal removal event during midloop operation of a Westinghouse-type PWR were used in the analysis. The predicted core boiling time and the peak primary system pressure showed good agreements with the measured data. Some differences between the calculational results and the experimental results were, however, found in areas of the timing of loop seal clearing and the temperature distribution in a pressurizer. Other calculational problems identified were discussed as well.

  • Changes in the content of volatile terpenoids were investigated with heat-treated carrot. As heat treatment temperature became higher, the amount of volatile terpenoids decreased significantly. According to heat-treatment period, the volatile terpenoids, a-pinene and total terpenoids, decreased drastically during the initial 30-minutes of heat treatment but the rate of decrease slowed down afterwards. When changes in the content of volatile terpenoids in carrot juice were investigated according to sterilization temperature and period, the content decreased quickly with higher sterilization temperature. According to sterilization period, the content of volatile terpenoids decreased drastically during the initial 20-minutes of sterilization but decreased gradually afterwards. The amount of total terpenoids decreased more when sterilization was done at 10$0^{\circ}C$ for 20 minutes compared to sterilization at 6$0^{\circ}C$ and 8$0^{\circ}C$ for 60 min. In order to reduce the amount of volatile terpenoids in carrot juice, sterilization at high temperature for a short period of time would be more effective compared with sterilization at low temperature for a long period of time.

  • Venting capability to prevent excess pressurization caused by loss of Residual Heat Removal System (RHRS) during mid-loop operation hat been evaluated analytically and the peak Reactor Coolant System (RCS) pressure was compared with the results of the MIDLOOP computer code. Even though analytical method if relatively simple, the results are in a good agreement with those of the computer code. For both methods, the peak pressures have not, exceeded the nozzle dam design pressure, if the vent paths such as pressurizer safety valves or a pressurizer manway are available in a closed RCS configuration with the nozzle dam installed.

  • Increasing interest in indoor air quality (IAQ) control has been found because of its serious effect on human health. To evaluate IAQ, thermal comfort in terms of temperature and velocity distributions of indoor air has to be analyzed in detail. Choice of location for installation of air-conditioner in a building will affect the performance of cooling effect and thermal comfort on the occupants, which in turn will affect the indoor air quality (IAQ) of the building. In this paper, we present a discussion on the proper location of the air-conditioner in order to obtain good thermal comfort for occupant of a typical bedroom in Macao. A set of carefully designed numerical experiments is run with the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software FLOVENT 3.2 [1]. Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved with finite volume technique and turbulence effects upon the mean flow characteristics is modeled with the k - & model. Assumption of steady state environment is made and only convective and conductive heat transfer from the occupant and air-conditioner are being concerned.

  • In many semi-empirical analyses of flow boiling heat transfer, an annular flow is often assumed as a model flow and the local liquid film thickness is a key parameter in the analysis. This work considers a simple electrical conductance technique to estimate the local liquid film thickness in two-phase annular flows. In this approach, many electrodes are mounted flush with the inner wall of the pipe. Voltage differences between two neighboring electrodes for concentric annular flows with various liquid film thicknesses are obtained before the main experiments and logged in a look-up table. For an actual application in the annual flow, voltage differences of neighboring electrodes are measured and then corresponding local film thicknesses are determined by the interpolation of the look-up table. Even though the proposed technique is quite simple and straightforward, the numerical and static phantom experiments support its usefulness.
