Selective laser melting (SLM), one of the most widely used powder bed fusion (PBF) additive manufacturing (AM) technology, enables the fabrication of customized metallic parts with complex geometry by layer-by-layer fashion. However, SLM inherently poses several problems such as the discontinuities in the molten track and the steep temperature gradient resulting in a high degree of residual stress. To avoid such defects, thisstudy proposes a temperature thread multiscale model of SLM for the evaluation of the process at different scales. In microscale melt pool analysis, the laser beam parameters were evaluated based on the predicted melt pool morphology to check for lack-of-fusion or keyhole defects. The analysis results at microscale were then used to build an equivalent body heat flux model to obtain the residual stress distribution and the part distortions at the macroscale (part level). To identify the source of uneven heat dissipation, a liquid lifetime contour at macroscale was investigated. The predicted distortion was also experimentally validated showing a good agreement with the experimental measurement.
The study presents structural integrity assessment of ductility degradation of a baffle former assembly by performing finite element analysis considering real loading conditions and stress triaxiality. Variations of fracture strain curves of type 304 austenitic stainless steel with stress triaxiality are derived based on the previous study results. Temperature distributions during normal operation such as heat-up, steady state, and cool-down are calculated via finite element temperature analysis considering gamma heating and heat convection with reactor coolant. Variations of stress and strain state during long operation period are also calculated by performing sequentially coupled temperature-stress analysis. Fracture strain is derived by using the fracture curve and the stress triaxility. Finally, variations of ductility degradation damage indicator with the fracture strain and the equivalent inelastic strain are investigated. It is found that maximum value of the ductility degradation damage index continuously increases and becomes 0.4877 at 40 EFPYs. Also, the maximum value occurs at top and middle inner parts of the baffle former assembly before and after 20 EFPYs, respectively.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the proposed jig for turning process of large-scale aluminum tube of D500mm through Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Also, a machining evaluation is conducted with general heat-treated and cryogenic heat-treated tubes. Dimensions of the specimens are determined to be suitable for collet appearance. The characteristics of equivalent stress and strain according to the expansion of the collet are evaluated by FEA. The aluminum tubes which are heat-treated by T4/T6 condition and cryogenic condition are machined by using a large-scale lathe machine and the roundness of machined tube is evaluated by using a 3D measuring machine. Through the results of this study, effects of each heat treatment and residual stress on the roundness are established.
The use of thin plate increases due to the need for light weight in large ship. Thin plate is easily distorted and has residual stress by welding heat. Therefore, the thin plates should be carefully joined to minimize the welding deformation. In this study, the welding deformation of PCTC which use a thin plate is investigated by using equivalent load method. The analysis model of 10, 11, 12, upper and garage deck is composed of thin plate of 6mm which is susceptible to welding heat. For two different welding sequences, the welding deformation is calculated and its trend is investigated. The influence of gravity on welding deformation is studied.
The purpose of this study is to examine the cause of damage to electrolytic capacitors and to present the heat generation mechanism in order to prevent the occurrence of similar problems. From the analysis results of electrolytic capacitors collected from accident sites, the fire causing area can be limited to the primary power supply for the initial accident. From the tests performed by applying overvoltage, surge, etc., it is thought that the fuse, varistor, etc., are not directly related to the accidents that occurred. The analysis of the characteristics using a switching regulator showed that the charge and discharge characteristics fell short of standard values. In addition, it is thought that heated electrolytic capacitors caused thermal stress to nearby resistances, elements, etc. It can be seen that the heat generation is governed by the over-ripple current, application of AC overvoltage, surge input, internal temperature increase, defective airtightness, etc. Therefore, when designing an electrolytic capacitor, it is necessary to comprehensively consider the correct polarity arrangement, appropriate voltage application, correct connection of equivalent series resistance(ESR) and equivalent series inductance(SEL), rapid charge and discharge control, sufficient margin of dielectric tangent, etc.
The purpose of this paper is to determine a two dimensional axisymmetric model through a comparative study between a three dimensional and an axisymmetric finite element analysis of the reactor coolant piping nozzle subject to internal pressure. The finite element analysis results show that the stress adopting the axisymmetric model with the radius of equivalent spherical vessel are well agree with that adopting the three dimensional model. The the radii of equivalent spherical vessel are 3.5 times and 7.3 times of the radius of the reactor coolant piping for the safety injection nozzle and for the residual heat removal nozzle, respectively.
As a case study on aspect ratio behavior, Kaolin, zeolite, $TiO_2$, pozzolan and diatomaceous earth minerals are investigated using wet milling with 0.3 pai media. The grinding process using small media of 0.3 pai is suitable for current work processing applications. Primary particles with average particle size distribution D50, ${\sim}6{\mu}m$ are shifted to submicron size, D50 ${\sim}0.6{\mu}m$, after grinding. Grinding of particles is characterized by various size parameters such as sphericity as geometric shape, equivalent diameter, and average particle size distribution. Herein, we systematically provide an overview of factors affecting the primary particle size reduction. Energy consumption for grinding is determined using classical grinding laws, including Rittinger's and Kick's laws. Submicron size is obtained at maximum frictional shear stress. Alterations in properties of wettability, heat resistance, thermal conductivity, and adhesion increase with increasing particle surface area. In the comparison of the aspect ratio of the submicron powder, the air heat conductivity and the total heat release amount increase 68 % and 2 times, respectively.
Analysis for the thermal stress distribution in the laminated plates containing a hot-spot(local heating region) is performed. It is assumed that the local heating region induces only mechanical stress by the thermal expansion but effect of the thermal conduction is neglected. The region is regarded equivalent to a homogeneous inclusion expanding in a laminated medium. As an example, Au/YBCO/Al$_2$O$_3$laminate which is often employed for High Temperature Superconducting Fault Current Limiter(HTS FCL) has been analyzed. Effects of heat input, thickness of each layer and the got spot size upon the stress distribution in the hot-spot have been investigated. For a constant heat generation into the hot-spot, as the thickness of the Al$_2$O$_3$substrate increases, the stress in the YBCO layer is peculiarly oscillated, and the curvature of laminate has a maximum at a certain thickness of the Al$_2$O$_3$.
Welded joint often contains soft or softened regions such as the HAZ of TMCP steel welded with high heat input. In this study, the equivalent yield strength of plate structure containing softened region was predicted by FEM analysis, and its incremental behavior was explained with the results of the analysis. The calculated results of yield strength indicated the following for the plate structures. 1) As the softened region starts to yield, shear stress begins to build up along the boundary between base metal and softened region. This results in multi-axial stress condition which gives restraint on the softened region. 2) Restraint effect has a significant influence on the distribution of the shear stress, the nominal stress, and the strain. 3) The yielding behavior of softened region becomes the same as that of base metal when both ratios of length to width and thickness to width of softened region are larger than 30 and 13 respectively.
