  • In this paper, a new approach to detect surface cracks from a noisy thermal image in the infrared thermography is presented using an holomorphic characteristic of temperature field in a thin plate under steady-state thermal condition. The holomorphic function for 2-D heat flow field in the plate was derived from Cauchy Riemann conditions to define a contour integral that varies according to the existence and strength of a singularity in the domain of integration. The contour integral at each point of thermal image eliminated the temperature variation due to heat conduction and suppressed the noise, so that its image emphasized and highlighted the singularity such as crack. This feature of holomorphic function was also investigated numerically using a simple thermal field in the thin plate satisfying the Laplace equation. The simulation results showed that the integral image selected and detected the crack embedded artificially in the plate very well in a noisy environment.

  • We consider the inverse problem of the identification of a piecewise-constant conductivity in a bar given the extra information of the heat flux through one end of the bar. Our theoretical results show that such an identification is unique. This approach utilizes a "layer peeling" argument. A computational algorithm based on this method is proposed and implemented. The advantage of this algorithm is that it requires only 3D minimizations irrespective of the number of the unknown discontinuities. Its numerical effectiveness is investigated for several conductivities.

  • Explosive evaporative removal process of biological tissue by absorption of a CW laser has been simulated by using gelatin and a multimode Nd:YAG laser. Because the point of maximun temperature of laser-irradiated gelatin exists below the surface due to surface cooling, evaporation at the boiling temperature is made explosively from below the surface. The important parameters of this process are the conduction loss to laser power absorption (defined as the conduction-to-laser power parameter, Nk), the convection heat transfer at the surface to conduction loss (defined as Bi), dimensionless extinction coefficient (defined as Br.), and dimensionless irradiation time (defined as Fo). Dependence of Fo on Nk and Bi has been observed by experiment, and the results have been compared with the numerical results obtained by solving a 2-dimensional conduction equation. Fo and explosion depth (from the surface to the point of maximun temperature) are increased when Nk and Bi are increased. To find out the minimum laser power for explosive evaporative removal process, steady state analysis has been also made. The limit of Nk to induce evaporative removal, which is proportional to the inverse of the laser power, has been obtained.

  • A onetimensional distribution of the temperature and the heat source in the SOI (silicon-on-insulator) multi-layer structure illuminated by tungsten lamps from both sides was obtained by solving the heat equation in steady state on a finite difference grid using successive over-relaxation method. The heat source distribution was obtained by considering such features as spectral components of the light source, multiple reflection at the internal interfaces, temperature and frequency dependence of the light absorption coefficient, etc. The front and back surface temperatures, which are boundary conditions for the heat equation, were derived from a requirement that they satisfy the radiation conditions. The radiation flux as well as the conduction flux was considered in modelling the thermal behaviour at the internal interfaces. Since the temperature and the heat source profiles are strongly dependent upon each other, the calculation of each profile was iterated using the updated profile of the other until they are consistent with each other. The experimental temperature at the front surface of the wafer as measured by Pyrometer was about 1200$^{\circ}$K, while the simulated temperature was 1120$^{\circ}$K.

  • This study was carried out for the purpose of determination of maintenance period and investigation of weak point due to freeze when the gas heater of KOGAS valve station Is not operated in winter season. 3-dimensional non-linear numerical simulation was conducted in order to predict the time and location which bath water in heater reaches to ice point. FLUENT V 5.0, commercial code, is used for thermal fluid flow analysis. We thought this was problem of heat conduction solving the energy equation and modeled gas heater by using the real geometry and scale for performing the 3-dimensional simulation. It was analyzed complex heat transfer phenomena considering convection due to air on surface, conduction in insulation material, natural convection of liquid in heater and heat loss through the pipe.

  • In the present study, a finite element analysis of conjugate heat transfer problem inside a cavity with a heat-generating conducting body, where constant heat flux is generated, is conducted. A conduction heat transfer problem inside the solid body is automatically coupled with natural convection inside the cavity by using a finite element formulation. A finite element formulation based on SIMPLE type algorithm is adopted for the solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with energy equation. The proposed algorithm is verified by solving the benchmark problem of conjugate heat transfer inside a cavity having a centered body. Then a conjugate natural heat transfer problem inside a cavity having a heat-generating conducting body with constant heat flux is solved and the effect of the Rayleigh number on the heat transfer characteristics inside a cavity is investigated.

  • In this paper, it is proposed that a algorithm which is applicable to the transient analysis by combined use of the Laplace transform and the finite element method. The proposed method removes the time terms using the Laplace transform and then solves the associated equation with the finite element method. The solution which is solved at frequency domain is transformed into time domain by use of the Laplace inversion. To verify proposed algorithm, heat conduction problem is analysed and found a good agreement with analytic solution.

  • The analysis of temperature distribution and change of metallic structures during water quench were presented by finite element method. In temperature calculation the equation of unsteady state hear conduction problem considering latent heat due to phase transformation was applied to finite solid cylinder, SM 45C of 40mm diameter and 40mm height. In metallic structure analysis iso-thermal transformation curve and the equations of evolution in pearlite-martensite transformation were applied. The calculated results upon temperature and metallic structures were agreed with those of experimental observations.

  • In this study, heat loss through free surface of water contained in bathtub due to conduction and evaporation has been analyzed. As a result of this study, a relational equation has been derived based on the basic theory of heat transfer to evaluate the performance of bath tubes. The derived equation was rational and quantitative. The major heat loss was found to be due to evaporation. Moreover, it has been found out that the speed of heat loss depends more on the humidity of the bathroom than the temperature of water contained in the bathtub. So, it is best to maintain the temperature of bathtub water to be between 41 to $45^{\circ}C$ and the humidity of bathroom to be 95%.

  • Thermal behavior of high capacity Nickel/Metal hybride battery in analyzed using the NISA software which is based on the three dimensional finite element method. Differential energy balance equation is used for the conduction heat transfer of the battery, while convective heat transfer equation is used for the interface between the battery and air. Heat generation rate and convective heat transfer coefficient are tested as variables to investigate thermal behavior, and the generalized equation for maximum temperature inside the battery is developed. The abrupt rise of the battery temperature due to the quick charge or discharge can be prevented from the use of metallic cooling fin. In addition, temperature augmentation of the battery is negligible when the low thermal conductive and thin insulating material is used outside of the battery case.
