  • Evaporative heat transfer characteristics of carbon dioxide has been investigated. Experiment has been carried out for seamless stainless steel tube with outer diameter of 9.55 mm and inner diameter of 7.75 mm. Direct heating method is used for supplying heat to the refrigerant was uniformly heated by electric current which was applied to the tube wall. The saturation temperature of refrigerant is calculated from the measured saturation pressure by using an equation of state. Inner wall temperature was calculated from measured outer wall temperature, accounting for heat generation in the tube and heat conduction through the tube wall. Mass Quality of refrigerant was calculated by considering energy balance in the preheater and the test section. Heat fluxes were set at 12, 16, 20, 23, and $27kW/m^2$, mass fluxes were controlled at 212, 318, 424, and $530 kg/m^2s$, and saturation temperature of refrigerant were adjusted at 0, 3.4, 6.7 and $10.5^{\circ}C$. From this study, heat transfer coefficients of carbon dioxide have been provided with respect to quality for several mass fluxes, heat fluxes. Finally, the experimental results in this study are compared with the correaltion by Gungor and Winterton(1987).

  • The calculation of each unit cost of productions is very important for evaluating the economical efficiency and deciding the reasonable sale price. In the present, two methods of exergy costing on multiple energy systems are suggested to reduce the complexities of conventional SPECO method and MOPSA method and to improve the calculation efficiency of exergoeconomics. The suggested methods were applied to a gas-turbine cogeneration and the unit costs of the power and the steam energy were calculated as an example. The main points of our methods are the following three. First, one exergetic cost is applied to one cycle or system. Second, the suggested equations are the internal cost balance equation and the production cost balance equation. Third, necessary states in a system are only inlet and exit states of 1ha components producing energy.

  • Joining thin aluminum alloy is difficult using most welding techniques. Many of the problems are associated with bum-through by the high heat input. Common welding techniques are TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas), MIG (Metal Inert Gas), and PULSE-MIG welding. The method provides more control of the heat balance in the welding arc by taking advantage of the different arc characteristics obtained with each of the two polarities. In this paper, we proposed a new welding method by control DSP 320C32, and the characteristic and experiment result-voltage, current, welding bead, and penetrations by this method are presented.

  • A numerical method for treating transient diffusion Involving change of phase is presented. In other methods of dealing with this class of problems, the mass flux balance at the moving phase boundary requires explicit treatment of two distinct phases. The technique, originating from the apparent heat capacity method in transient heat conduction with the phase change, avoids the difficulty by transferring the concentration discontinuity at the boundary to smoothed physical property variations near the moving front. This technique accomodates the nonlinearities which preclude use of analytical solutions. It was tested against known analytical solutions for simple cases and turned out to be quite accurate.

  • A numerical method is presented which can solve the steady flow and heat transfer from a rotating and heated circular cylinder in a uniform flow for a range of Reynolds number form 5 to 100. The steady response of the flow and heat transfer is simulated for various spin parameter. The effects on the flow field and heat transfer characteristics known as lift, drag and heat transfer coefficient are analyzed and the streamlines, velocity vectors, vorticity, temperature distributions around it were scrutinized numerically. As spin parameter increases the region of separation vortex becomes smaller than upper one and the lower region will vanish. The lift force, a large part is due to the pressure force, increases as the Reynolds number and it increases linearly as spin parameter increases. The pressure coefficient changes rapidly with spin parameter on the lower surface of the cylinder and the vorticity is sensitive to the spin parameter near separation region. As spin parameter increases the maximum heat coefficient and the thin thermal layer on front region are moved to direction of rotation. However, with balance between the local increase and decrease, the overal heat transfer coefficient is almost unaffected by rotation.

  • Heat energy distribution forming net radiation above corn canopy was determined by means of the Bowen ratio-energy balance method. Total-global solar radiation above crop canopy during the growing season was $1,559MJm^{-2}$ and total latent heat flux density was $960MJm^{-2}$. The data showed that 61.6% of the global solar radiation was used for a heat source of evapotranspiration (ETa) above corn canopy. Mean daily ETa ranged from 2.7 to 5.6mm. Total ETa, total drymatter, and water use efficiency were 394mm, $2,214gm^{-2}$, and $5.6gm^{-2}mm^{-1}$, respectivively.

  • Urbanization causes urban floods and urban heat island in the summer, so it is necessary to understanding the changes of the thermal environment through urban climate and energy balance. This can be explained by the energy balance, but in urban areas, unlike the typical energy balance, the storage heat flux saved in the building or artificial land cover should be considered. Since the environment of each city is different, there is a difficulty in applying the method of retrieving the storage heat flux of the previous research. Especially, most of the previous studies are focused on the overseas cities, so it is necessary to study the storage heat retrieval suitable for various land cover and building characteristics of the urban areas in Korea. Therefore, the object of this study, it is to derive the regression formula which can quantitatively retrieve the storage heat using the data of the area where various surface types exist. To this end, nonlinear regression analysis was performed using net radiation and surface temperature data as independent variables and flux tower based storage heat estimates as dependent variables. The retrieved regression coefficients were applied to each independent variable to derive the storage heat retrieval regression formula. As a result of time series analysis with flux tower based storage heat estimates, it was well simulated high peak at day time and the value at night. Moreover storage heat retrieved in this study was possible continuous retrieval than flux tower based storage heat estimates. As a result of scatter plot analysis, accuracy of retrieved storage heat was found to be significant at $50.14Wm^{-2}$ and bias $-0.94Wm^{-2}$.

  • In this paper, analysis of critical fluid velocity and heat transfer in the nanocomposite pipes conveying nanofluid is presented. The pipe is reinforced by carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and the fluid is mixed by $AL_2O_3$ nanoparticles. The material properties of the nanocomposite pipe and nanofluid are considered temperature-dependent and the structure is subjected to magnetic field. The forces of fluid viscosity and turbulent pressure are obtained using momentum equations of fluid. Based on energy balance, the convection of inner and outer fluids, conduction of pipe and heat generation are considered. For mathematical modeling of the nanocomposite pipes, the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and energy method are used. Utilizing the Lagrange method, the coupled pipe-nanofluid motion equations are derived. Applying a semi-analytical method, the motion equations are solved for obtaining the critical fluid velocity and critical Reynolds and Nusselt numbers. The effects of CNTs volume percent, $AL_2O_3$ nanoparticles volume percent, length to radius ratio of the pipe and shell surface roughness were shown on the critical fluid velocity, critical Reynolds and Nusselt numbers. The results are validated with other published work which shows the accuracy of obtained results of this work. Numerical results indicate that for heat generation of $Q=10MW/m^3$, adding 6% $AL_2O_3$ nanoparticles to the fluid increases 20% the critical fluid velocity and 15% the Nusselt number which can be useful for heat exchangers.

  • In order to retrieve the latent and sensible heat fluxes, high-resolution airborne imageries with visible, near infrared, and thermal infrared bands and ground-base meteorology measurements are utilized in this paper. The retrieval scheme is based on the balance of surface energy budget and momentum equations. There are three basic surface parameters including surface albedo $(\alpha)$, normalized difference vegetation index (NOVI) and surface kinetic temperature (TO). Lowtran 7 code is used to correct the atmosphere effect. The imageries were taken on 28 April and 5 May 2003. From the scattering plot of data set, we observed the extreme dry and wet pixels to derive the fitting of dry and wet controlled lines, respectively. Then the sensible heat and latent heat fluxes are derived from through a partitioning factor A. The retrieved latent and sensible heat fluxes are compared with in situ measurements, including eddy correlation and porometer measurements. It is shown that the retrieved fluxes from our scheme match with the measurements better than those derived from the S-SEBI model.
