According to the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning's survey of information gap, smartphone retention rate of disabled people stayed in one-third of non-disabled people, the situation is significantly less access to information for people with disabilities than non-disabled people. In this paper, we develop an application, CallHelper, that helps to be more convenient to use mobile voice calls to the auditory disabled people. CallHelper runs automatically when a call comes in, translates caller's voice to text output on the mobile screen, and displays the emotion reasoning from the caller's voice to visualize emoticons. It also saves voice, translated text, and emotion data that can be played back.

This paper is a system that visually informs the hearing impaired to visit other people by blinking the light of a room using the IoT(Internet of Things) technology. The system combines the power of home-use lights with low-power IoT devices to provide visual notifications. Using a current sensor, this system can track user location and then turns on and off the light in that room only to save energy. The proposed idea can create a society that is equal to everyone and can live more conveniently.
In this paper, we develope the smart phone App. contents of 3D sign language to widen the opportunity of the korean sign language education for the hearing-impaired and normal people. Especially, we propose the sign language conversion algorithm that automatically transform the structure of Korean phrases to the structure of the sign language. Also, we implement the 3D sign language animation DB using motion capture system and data glove for acquiring the natural motions. Finally, UNITY 3D engine is used for the realtime 3D rendering of sign language motion. We are distributing the proposed App. with 3D sign language DB of 1,300 words to the iPhone App. store and Android App. store.

This paper describes the development of a novel walking assistance robot for the elderly and infirm. In the case of simple walking assistance devices, the walking safety and effectiveness are somewhat low; hence, caregivers are frequently required. The walking assistance robot developed in this research is capable of securely and conveniently assisting a walking user by using electric motors and various devices without a caregiver. The main features include the following. First, the walking safety is improved by using a pelvis supporter, and the robot is able to follow the user effectively by means of ergonomic motion sensors and electric powered wheels. Second, it is possible to adjust the load applied to the lower body by adjusting the height of the pelvis supporter. Finally, it is possible to inform the approximate distance and direction of any obstacle around the robot using the sounds and vibrations for the blind and the hearing impaired. The performance of the developed walking assistance robot was successfully verified using a walking assistance test in a narrow-corridor environment.
This study was purported to examine the definition of tone deafness, various factors for the cause based on literature review of research findings, and to examine therapeutic application of music for treatment of tone deafness. With research, it was found that there can be three different kinds of tone deafness; amusia, agnosia, and asonia. Literature review showed that tone deafness has been frequently dealt in many research in order to verify the causal factors, such as gender, age, and environments. With time, the research trend on tone deafness has shifted towards neurological approach closely examining brain activity, presenting the statement that the brain's capacity to perceive modest pitch changes may be congenitally impaired. Also physiological factors contribute to tone deafness called diplacusis, which is a phenomenon wherein a given tone is heard as different pitches by the two ears, resulting in conflicting bilateral perception of pitch. Music can be used for treatment of various factors causing tone deafness. The most efficient intervention was singing program. Pitch-matching training can be effective training using operant conditioning procedure. Successive approximation or reinforcement of correct response alone was more efficient procedure in helping uncertain singers to sing on pitch. Also progressive breathing exercises helped the training the pitch-matching where one had to coordinate hearing and voice.
In this research, we had two experiments. In the first experiment we focused on the comparison of loaming between two groups of hearing impaired students (multimedia training group and traditional print-based method group). The results from the first experiment indicated that there was no numerical difference in test scores between the two groups of students but the students enjoyed learning with computer. We then carried out the second experiment. This time, we focused more on measuring the qualitative nature of the learning using multimedia technology. The results of the second experiment indicated that the two methods of teaching and learning affected students similarly since the average scores of both groups showed no statistically significant difference. About 89% of the students in the second experiment enjoyed learning from the CD-ROM. This result was based not just on the CD-ROM Life in Saskatchewan, but included any kinds and subjects of CD-ROM used in the classroom. Although multimedia training is as good as, but no better than, the traditional print-based method, multimedia can be used as a valuable supplement in adaptive technology.

Deaf mutism (a hearing-impaired person and speech disorders) communicates using sign language. There are difficulties in communicating by voice. However, sign language can only be limited in communicating with people who know sign language because everyone doesn't use sign language when they communicate. In this paper, a finger language translation system is proposed and implemented as a means for the disabled and the non-disabled to communicate without difficulty. The proposed algorithm recognizes the finger language data by leap motion and self-learns the data using machine learning technology to increase recognition rate. We show performance improvement from the simulation results.
This study is intended to suggest ways to improve the quality of the service of subtitles provided for the convenience of viewing for deaf people on e-sports broadcast content and game streamer content. Generally, subtitling files of broadcast content are manually written on air by stenographers, so a delay of 3 to 5 seconds is inevitable compared to the original content. Therefore, the present study proposed the formation of an automatic synchronization calibration system using speech recognition technology. In addition, a content application experiment using this system was conducted, and the final result confirmed that the time of synchronization error of subtitling data could be reduced to less than 1 second.

Listening effort is defined as a listener's mental exertion required to understand a speaker's auditory message, especially when distracting conditions are present. This review paper analyzed several subjective scaling tools used to measure the listening effort in order to suggest the best tool for use with hearing-impaired listeners who have to expend much effort even in everyday life. We first explained the importance of measuring listening effort and discussed various kinds of measurements. We then analyzed and categorized 15 recently published articles (i.e., from 2014 to 2016) into three topics: performance and listening effort, listening effort and fatigue, and clinical implication of listening effort. We compared the articles in terms of pros and cons and also identified 10 tools for use in the subjective scaling. Although none of these tools were unified or standardized easily, we concluded that 7-point scale would be the most reasonable as a less time-consuming measurement for compartmentalizing the degree of listening effort. If used with objective tools for measuring the listening effort, the subjective scaling could be a powerful tool for clinical use.
