In Korea there is no specific method of age adjustment in noise induced hearing loss(NIHL). We attempted the age adjustment to understand the effects of age on the diagnosis of NIHL. We used the International Standard Organization 1999 as an age adjustment method. We used the 1, 617 otologically normal person's hearing data from a health examination center, and 206 workers diagnosed as NIHL. We concluded as follows; 1. The ISO 7029 function used for age specific hearing loss is not suited to Korean people. 2. The mean of age specific hearing loss is 11.0 6.2dB and the older of age, the more decrease on hearing loss, especially in 4000Hz. 3. The difference of NIHL between before age adjustment and after age adjustment in the 3rd decade is 5.4dB, in the 4th decade is 6.7dB, in the 5th decade is 8.5dB, in the 6th decade is 10.4dB, and in the 7th decade is 12.9dB. The older, the more is the difference. 4. After age adjustment, the number of workers diagnosed as NIHL decreases to 60% of unadjusted.
We have developed a multi band digital hearing aid algorithm emphasizing feedback cancellation and a hardware module to evaluate the performance of our algorithm. The hearing aids should be able to compensate for individual hearing loss characteristics of hearing impaired person. Thus hearing aids need the function of multi-bands amplification and the capabilities of feedback cancellation that can remove howling caused by acoustic feedback. In this paper, we proposed a digital hearing aid algorithm which has multi-bands compensation using modified discrete cosine transform (MDCT) and can efficiently remove acoustic feedbacks. Moreover, we have developed digital hearing aid hardware module, which can evaluate hearing aid algorithms in real time operation. The developed algorithm and hardware module were verified through computer simulation and clinical tests. Through operational experiments, good performances in real time operation environment and an efficient howling cancellation were also observed. The developed hardware module can operate in stable condition and it is expected to become a good hardware platform for developing hearing aid algorithms.
Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions (DPOAEs) can be measured in the external ear canal two fold: amplitude and latency, but most DPOAE studies deal with amplitude aspects. The purpose of this study was to investigate the latency of the 2f1-f2 DPOAEs in ears with hearing losses and to see if it could be a clinically useful method to distinguish normal from abnormal ears. For this purpose, DPOAE latency were measured as a function of frequency from 1 to 8 kHz in 30 ears with conductive and sensorineural hearing losses (SNHLs). DPOAEs were recorded with Otodynamic Analyzer ILO92. Results showed that the latency decreased as the frequency increased up to 8 kHz. The mean values of DPOAE latency for ears of SNHLs were shorter at all frequencies when they were compared to the mean values of normal ears. The latency in ears of conductive hearing losses was shorter than normal ears at the selective frequencies, as well. The results support the hypothesis that latency values are shorter in pathological ears.
One mechanism of inner ear damage by noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Because Korean red ginseng (KRG) has an anti-ROS effect in various tissues, KRG may have a role in preventing NIHL. A window period exists in which ROS formations continue after noise exposure, and further damage can be prevented by antioxidants. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of KRG after exposure to noise. KRG (200 mg/kg) was fed to mice for 3 days after noise exposure. The change in hearing level was analyzed by measuring the auditory brainstem response. To induce a temporary threshold shift (TTS) of hearing, mice were exposed to 110 dB white noise for 3 hours. Fast recovery of hearing was observed in mice fed KRG 1 hour and 1 day after noise exposure for 3 days. The expression of 8-oxoguanine was not observed in the inner ears of mice fed KRG 1 hour after noise exposure, but was evident in the stria vascularis of mice in the control group (noise exposure only). From this study, we conclude that KRG acted as an effective inhibitor of NIHL in TTS cases.
Objectives: It is expected that the combined cisplatin and radiation therapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma produces more sensory neural hearing losses compared to radiation therapy alone. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence of sensory neural hearing losses after concurrent cisplatin and radiation therapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Materials and Methods: From Jun. 1994 to Mar. 1997, 10 patients were available for this study with the following eligibility criteria: 1) The patients received concurrent cisplatin and radiation therapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. 2) There was no pre-existing auditory disease except serous otitis media due to nasopharyngeal carcinoma. 3) They had normal sensorineural hearing function on the pretreatment pure tone audiogram. 4) Pure tone audiograms were performed at least one time after treatment between 6months to 1 year follow-up without local recurrence. Results: At 1 year follow-up, 3 patients complained of decreased hearing capacity. Sensorineural hearing losses were developed in 15 ears out of 20(75%) and were more frequent and severe in high frequency area on pure tone audiogram. Conclusion: The concurrent cisplatin and radiation therapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma may produce sensorineural hearing losses more frequently compared to historical data of radiation therapy alone and close evaluations with regular audiograms are necessary even in patients without symptoms and signs of hearing impairment.

The purpose of this study is to help the hearing impaired's speech training with a visible speech processing system. In brief, this system converts the features of speech signals into graphics on monitor, and adjusts the features of hearing impaired to normal ones. There are form ant and pitch in the features used for this system. They are extracted using the digital signal processing such as linear prediotive method or AMDF(Average Magnitude Difference Function). In order to effectively train for the hearing impaired's abnormal speech, easilly visible feature has been being studied.

Object : The goals of radiosurgery include preservation of neurological function and prevention of tumor growth. We document the results of gamma-knife radio-surgery for vestibular schwannoma. Method & Object : Eighty-two patients underwent stereotactic radiosurgery for an vestibular schwannoma from October, 1994 to December, 2000. Sixty-five of these patients were followed up for radiological and clinical evaluation. As pregamma-knife modality, surgical resection were done in 23 patients, and V-P shunt in 2 patients. Initial symptoms were headache(n=45), dizziness(n=16), tinnitus(n=17). While normal facial function(House-Brackmann grade 1) was present in 48 patients(73.8%), other patients showed grade 2 function in 8, grade 3 function in 7,and grade 4 function in 2. The Gardner/Robertson scale was used to code hearing function. Male to female ratio was 1:3. Mean tumor volume was $7.98cm^3$. Mean dose delivered to the tumor margin was 14.2Gy,and mean maximal dose was 28.3Gy. Results : Mean follow-up duration of 19.9 months. Thirty-five showed decrease(53.8%) in size, 19 patients(29.2%) stationary, 3(4.6%) initial decrease follow up increase, 5(7.6%) initial increase follow up decrease, and 59 patients (90.8%) were well controlled. Two patients experienced transient facial neuropathy, one transient trigeminal neuropathy, and one transient hearing deterioration. After gamma-knife radiosurgery, ventriculoperitoneal shunt was done in 4 patients. Conclusions : Gamma-knife radiosurgery can be used to treat postoperative residual tumors as well as in patients with concomitant medical problems in patients with preserved hearing function. Gamma-knife radiosurgery is safe and effective method to treat small, medium sized(less than 3cm in extracanalicular diameter), intracanalicular vestibular schwannoma, associated with low rate of cranial neuropathy.

Background and Objectives: Temporal bone fracture (TBF) is a common occurrence in cases of head trauma. Although the incidence of temporal bone concussion (TBC) has increased in cases of head trauma, it has not been extensively studied. We assessed the characteristics of TBF and TBC in patients with head trauma. Subjects and Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of 432 patients with head injury who visited our hospital between January 2011 and April 2016. Of these patients, 211 who met the inclusion criteria were included in the study. Their clinical characteristics, causes of injury, and hearing function were analyzed. Results: Among the 211 patients, 157 had TBFs and 54 had TBCs. Ear symptoms were more common among patients with TBF than among those with TBC. Car accidents were the most common cause of both TBF and TBC, but assault and sports injuries were more common among patients with TBC than among those with TBF. The occurrence of facial palsy in both cases of TBF and TBC. Hearing loss was observed among 35 patients with TBF and 11 patients with TBC. However, patients with TBF showed conductive hearing loss with an air-bone gap. Hearing function of these patients with TBF recovered with a reduced air-bone gap, but the patients with TBC showed little recovery. Conclusions: Emergency physicians should focus more on temporal bone injury in patients with head trauma. Therefore, an early complete diagnostic battery, which includes high-resolution computed tomography, audiometric tests, neurologic examination, and vestibular tests, be performed in patients with head trauma.

A person with defects and the lack of hearing, has very difficult problems to listen to the sound of conversation or environment, and these problems cause wrong directions in the linguistic sense and character. We designed and implemented an application to practice and correct pronunciation of a hearing-impaired person specially. This is made as a mobile app without the limitation of time and space, and this provides practices with the level of difficulty in learning of pronunciation, taking into consideration of remedial status in pronunciation. The hearing-impaired person can train the basic pronunciation and the word pronunciation. He or she can practice basic skills in pronunciation and check the record on the practice rate and the success rate. Also, the person can improve pronunciation by self-correction function using the front camera of a smart phone.
