Although medical exposure from diagnostic radiology procedures such as conventional x-rays, CT and PET scans is necessary for healthcare purposes, understanding its characteristics and size of the resulting radiation dose to patients is much of worth because medical radiation constitutes the largest artificial source of exposure and the medical exposure is in a trend of fast increasing particularly in the developed society. Annual collective doses and per-caput effective doses from different radiology procedures in Korea were estimated by combining the effective dose estimates per single medical procedure and the health insurance statistics in 2002. Values of the effective dose per single procedure were compiled from different sources including NRPB reports, ICRP 80, MIRDOSE3.1 code and independent computations of the authors. The annual collective dose reaches 27440 man-Sv (diagnostic radiology: 22880 man-Sv, nuclear medicine: 4560 man-Sv) which is reduced to the annual per-caput effective dose of 0.58 mSv by dividing by the national population of 47.7 millions. The collective dose is far larger than that of occupational exposures, in the country operated 16 nuclear power plants in 2002, which is no more than 70 man-Sv in the same year. It is particularly noted that the collective dose due to CT scans amounts 9960 man-Sv. These results implies that the national policy for radiation protection should pay much more attention to optimization of patient doses in medicine.

Purpose: In order to increase the quality of nursing care for patients with diabetes mellitus, it is important for clinical nurses to accept changes in diabetes knowledge and correct their approach immediately. This approach will also contribute to effective nursing practice. Methods: The study was designed to investigate the level of knowledge and diffusion of knowledge for nursing care of patients with diabetes mellitus among clinical nurses. It was conducted with nurses from 29 general hospitals in Korea from November 3 to December 5, 2008. The questionnaire consisted of 129 items and it was sent to the participants by mail. Of the 1,060 questionnaires returned, only 930 were valid for use in the statistical analysis. Results: 1) The average score for clinical nurses' knowledge of diabetes mellitus was 0.67 out of 1.0. 2) The level of persuasion of knowledge for nursing care of patients with diabetes mellitus averaged 0.64 out of 1.0 3) The level of practical application of knowledge for nursing care of patients with diabetes mellitus averaged 1.05 out of 2.0, indicating that they applied their knowledge 'sometimes'. 4) The level of diffusion of knowledge for nursing care of patients with diabetes mellitus was 2.37 out of 4.0 and level was estimated as the stage of 'persuasion'. 5) There were significant differences in nursing knowledge of diabetes mellitus, according to experience in practical education for diabetes mellitus. Conclusion: The results indicate that nurses with a lower level of knowledge of diabetes mellitus have a lower level of persuasion of knowledge for nursing care of patients with diabetes mellitus and lower practical application. To improve the level of nurses' knowledge of diabetes mellitus, practical training programs are needed for areas in which knowledge level is low, such as 'diagnosis and management of diabetes mellitus', 'oral diabetes medication', and 'glucose control in special conditions'.
Breast cancer is one of the top three most common cancers in modern women, and the incidence rate is increasing rapidly. Breast cancer has a high family history and a mortality rate of about 15%, making it a high-risk group. Therefore, breast cancer needs constant management after an early examination. Among the various equipment that can diagnose cancer, ultrasound has the advantage of low risk and being able to diagnose in real time. In addition, breast ultrasound will be more useful because Asian women's breasts are denser and less sensitive. However, the results of ultrasound examinations vary greatly depending on the technology of the examiner. To compensate for this, we intend to incorporate motion tracking technology. Motion tracking is a technology that specifies and analyzes a location according to the movement of an object in a three-dimensional space. Therefore, real-time control is possible, and complex and fast movements can be recorded in real time. We would like to present the production of an ultrasound examination guide using these advantages.

The aim of this study was to examine the quality of life (QOL) and its related factors in veterans with physical dysfunction. The survey data was collected from 412 patients with physical dysfunction managed at five veterans' hospitals in Seoul, Pusan, Daegu, Gwangju, and Daejeon city. The baseline for the quality of life was measured using the SF-36 (Short-Form 36), activities of daily living was measured using a Modified Barthel Index (MBI), pain level was determined using Quadruple Visual Analogue Scale (QVAS), and the depression level was assessed using Korean version of the Geriatric Depression Scale: Short-Form (SGDS-K). The SF-36 scores showed a significant correlation with age (r=-0.132), self-rated current health status (r=-0.545), active daily living (r=0.514), pain level (r=-0.243), and depression level (r=-0.565) (p<0.05). The most influential variables on the QOL were the depression level (B=-.969, p<0.001), QVAS (B=-0.163, p<0.001), and MBI (B=0.140, p<0.001). The results of this study showed that that depression, pain and activities of daily living are significant predictors of the QOL in veterans with a physical dysfunction. Therefore, healthcare providers need to consider these parameters for interventions to improve the QOL in veterans with a physical dysfunction.

Methicillin-resistant staphylococci (MRS), which are often multi-drug resistant (MDR), are important pathogens in both human and veterinary healthcare. The purpose of this study was to characterize the antimicrobial resistance of MRS isolated from dog ears in Korea. From 827 dog ears, staphylococci were cultured from both ears with otitis externa (n = 161, 41.0%) and healthy ears (n = 135, 31.1%). The prevalence of coagulase-positive staphylococci (CoPS) in ears with otitis externa (58.4%) was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than in healthy ears (28.2%), while the prevalence of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) in healthy ears (74.8%) was higher (P < 0.05) than in ears with otitis externa (41.6%). Forty-six (35.1%) and 74 (44.8%) CoPS and CoNS isolates, respectively, were determined to be MRS. Antimicrobial resistance in MRS was most frequently observed for penicillin (76.7%), ampicillin (61.7%), kanamycin (61.7%), erythromycin (47.5%), tetracycline (47.5%), and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (46.7%). Overall, the MDR isolates were resistant to significantly more (P < 0.05) antimicrobial agents tested than methicillin-sensitive staphylococci in this study. These results provide therapeutic guidelines for the treatment of otitis externa in dogs from Korean veterinary hospitals, and the significant associated health concern to companion animals and their human contacts.

The EMR management services can monitoring the patients' record with any doctors in any hospital by using the internet and smartphones online. To handle the real time, multidimensional, continuous data, database management systems (DBMS) must cope with high insert rates for updates, however the traditional DBMS suffers from processing these kinds of data due to its serious design bottlenecks. So the researchers put forward to Data Stream Management System (DSMS). In this paper we describe the real-time Data Stream Server for Continuity of Care Record (CCR) that including continuos query processor. This system is compiled with DSMS and DBMS in EMR system for processing and monitoring the coming CCR data stream, and also storing the processed result with high-efficiency. The system enables users not only to query stored CCR information from DBMS, but also to execute continue query on real-time CCR Data Stream, and health information can be transferred between different healthcare providers that would reduce medical error. At last, we develop a IPhone mobile application to test the proposed real-time data stream server.

This study was a descriptive investigation of the effects of nursing students' major satisfaction and professor-student interaction on their adjustment to university life. For this investigation, data were collected from July 22 to August 15, 2017. The collection was made through a questionnaire survey of nursing students in their 1st or 2nd year at one of eight colleges or universities located in B Metropolitan City, U Metropolitan City and G City. Participants were informed of the purpose of the study and agreed to participate in it. Of all the questionnaire sheets collected after the survey, those filled in by 205 participants were finally used for analysis here, with those by others excluded because they were considered to have been inappropriately filled out. The findings of this study can be summarized as follows. Nursing students surveyed in the study were significantly different from one another with respect to adjustment to university life depending on grade, health status, interpersonal relationships, desired career, academic achievement and family life level. Moreover, nursing students who had higher satisfaction with their major and more interactions with their professors were likely to adjust better to university life. In addition, regression analysis revealed that the nursing students' satisfaction with their major had the biggest effect on their adjustment to university life. Taken together, the results suggest that nursing students in their 1st or 2nd year of school should continue to be provided with curricular or extracurricular programs designed to improve their major satisfaction and that they should be given opportunities for communication with or counseling from their advisors or other nursing professors from the onset of university life.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the status of clinical nutrition services provided at tertiary hospitals and general hospitals in Korea. In total, 157 questionnaires were distributed to the departments of nutrition at hospitals on September 2013. The results of this study are as follows. The median number of beds was 607 and average length of stay was 8 days. 63.1% of dietitians had over 5 years of career experience. Nutritional screening rate was 97% in tertiary hospitals but only 67.2% in general hospitals (P<0.001). The rate of equipment with computerized nutritional screening system was 100% in tertiary hospitals but 71.9% in general hospitals (P<0.001). Hospitals with the best regarding nutritional care were hospitals accredited by JCI (Joint Commission International). On the other hand, hospitals not accredited by the JCI but KOIHA (Korea Institute for Healthcare Accreditation) showed the lowest performance rate of nutritional care. Nutrition support teams (NSTs) were established in all tertiary hospitals but in only 73% of general hospitals (P<0.001). The rate of actively operating NSTs was 89% in tertiary hospitals but only 62% in general hospitals (P<0.001). There is a need to provide proper standardized clinical nutrition services as a primary treatment and we observed large variations in the quality of nutritional service between hospitals. Therefore, local solutions are needed to implement nutritional programs and policies for improved service and care.
