Level of happiness and its association with food literacy among Seoul citizens: results from Seoul Food Survey 2021

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Happiness is an important factor in life, and food literacy (FL) has been emphasized as a core concept for a happy and healthy life. This study examined the level of happiness of Seoul citizens according to their sociodemographic factors and their association with FL. SUBJECTS/METHODS: This study used the data from the Seoul Food Survey, a cross-sectional study conducted on 4,039 Seoul citizens from September to October 2021. FL was measured using a validated questionnaire consisting of 33 items from 3 sub-domains: 14 items in the nutrition and safety domain, 8 items in the cultural and relational domain, and 11 items in the socio-ecological domain. Statistical analysis involved descriptive statistics and multivariate regression analysis. RESULTS: Various sociodemographic factors, such as household income, subjective health status, and food insecurity, were found to be associated with the level of happiness. The level of FL was also associated with the happiness scores. After adjusting for variables associated with happiness, the participants with the highest quartile FL scores were 7.32 times more likely to respond that they were happy than those with the lowest FL score. Three FL domains and total FL showed linear increases in overall happiness after controlling for subjective health status and sociodemographic factors (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: After adjusting for the related covariates, higher levels of FL were associated with higher scores in happiness. Based on this study, it would be meaningful to evaluate ways to intervene in FL to improve the level of happiness among the general population.

Nutrition education programs necessary for social welfare facilities for persons with disabilities: a cross-sectional study

  • Objectives: This study investigated the need for nutrition education aimed at improving the health of residents and users of social welfare facilities for persons with disability and aimed to provide basic information for developing a nutrition education program that meets the needs of the field. Methods: Altogether, 249 employees working in social welfare facilities for people with disabilities were included in the study. Data on the health status of residents/users, meal management, nutritional education, nutritional education needs, and awareness of nutritional education were obtained through online surveys. A descriptive analysis was conducted to analyze the demographic characteristics, needs, and perceptions of the respondents, and independent t-tests and χ2 tests were performed to analyze and compare the differences between residential and daycare facilities. Results: The majority of residents/users of social welfare facilities for persons with disabilities have developmental disabilities. When educating residents with residents/users of social welfare facilities, 'personal hygiene' was the most necessary topic, followed by 'obesity management' education. Regarding the methods of providing education, face-to-face lectures demonstrated a high demand. They responded that when nutrition education experts provide nutrition education to people with disabilities, they must understand 'the physical characteristics of persons with disabilities' and have the ability to determine appropriate nutrition for such people. The most appropriate nutrition program training would be twice a year, lasting 30 min to 1 h per training session. Conclusions: It will present a direction for operating a nutrition education program for persons with disabilities that meets their needs of social welfare facilities and ultimately contribute to the establishment and activation of nutrition education tailored to welfare facilities for such individuals in Korea.

Developing a short standard questionnaire for assessing work organization hazards: the Healthy Work Survey (HWS)

  • Background: At present, no short standard questionnaire exists for assessing and comparing major work organization hazards in the workplaces of the United States. Methods: We conducted a series of psychometric tests (content validity, factor analysis, differential-item functioning analysis, reliability, and concurrent validity) to validate and identify core items and scales for major work organization hazards using the data from the 2002-2014 General Social Surveys (GSSs), including the Quality of Worklife (QWL) questionnaire. In addition, an extensive literature review was undertaken to find other major work organization hazards which were not addressed in the GSS. Results: Although the overall validity of the GSS-QWL questionnaire was satisfactory in the psychometric tests, some GSS-QWL items of work-family conflict, psychological job demands, job insecurity, use of skills on the job, and safety climate scales appeared to be weak. In the end, 33 questions (31 GSS-QWL and 2 GSS) were chosen as the least, but best validated core questions and included in a new short standard questionnaire (called the Healthy Work Survey [HWS]). And their national norms were established for comparisons. Furthermore, based on the literature review, fifteen more questions for assessing other significant work organization hazards (e.g., lack of scheduling control, emotional demands, electronic surveillance, wage theft) were included in the new questionnaire. Thus, the HWS includes 48 questions in total for assessing traditional and emerging work organization hazards, which covers seven theoretical domains: work schedule/arrangement, control, support, reward, demands, safety, and justice. Conclusions: The HWS is a short standard questionnaire for assessing work organization hazards which can be used as a first step toward the risk management of major work organization hazards in the workplaces of the US.

변화단계 및 동기요소를 이용한 구강건강행동 변화 과정에 대한 질적 연구 (A Qualitative Study on the Change Process of Oral Health Behaviors Using the Stages of Change and Motivational Components)

  • 본 연구는 23명 대학생을 대상으로 1차 강의식 교육과 2차 소그룹별 실습 교육의 구강보건교육을 실시한 후 올바른 칫솔질, 치실질 실천 및 식습관 중 영양성분표 확인 등의 구강건강행동별로 변화단계와 동기요소의 변화 양상을 파악하고, 면접조사를 통해 동기요소에 영향을 미친 요인을 심층적으로 확인하여 구강건강행동의 변화 과정을 분석하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 1) 1, 2차 교육 후 1개월 내 행동을 시작하려는 준비단계의 응답비율이 소폭 증가하였다. 구강건강행동별 동기요소는 1차 교육에 비해 2차 교육 후 올바른 칫솔질에 대해 귀찮다고 느끼는 장애 인식에서 '귀찮음'에서 '귀찮지 않음'으로 긍정적으로 변화한 비율이 39.1%로 가장 높았고, 치실질 실천과 영양성분표 확인에서는 자기 효능감 인식에서 '자신 없음'에서 '할 수 있음'으로 긍정적으로 변화한 비율이 각각 50.0%, 30.4%로 높게 나타났다. 2) 올바른 칫솔질 실천에 대한 필요성 또는 유익성을 인식하였을 때 칫솔질 실천에 대해 귀찮아하는 장애 인식이 낮았다. 치실질 실천의 경우, 평소에 치아 사이를 관리하는 것에 대한 필요성을 느꼈거나, 지인으로부터 치실 사용을 권고받은 경험이 있거나 지인의 직접 사용하는 것을 보았을 때 치실질을 할 수 있겠다고 인식하는 자기효능감이 높았고, 식습관 중 영양성분표 확인에 대해 귀찮아하는 장애 인식이 낮고, 필요성과 유익성을 명확히 인식할 때 간식 구매 시 영양성분표를 확인하겠다고 하는 자기효능감 인식이 높았다. 3) 교육 대상자의 구강건강인식 및 행동변화에 영향을 미친 교육의 특성으로는 실험, 실습을 통해 결과를 직접, 바로 확인할 수 있는 참여위주의 교육이었고, 이해하기 쉬운 그림, 사진자료를 활용하였기 때문인 것으로 나타났다. 이에 따라 실습, 참여위주의 교육을 통해 구강건강행동을 실천할 수 있다는 자기효능감은 높이고 행동에 대한 어려움 인식은 낮추며, 자신의 상태를 관찰해 봄으로써 구강질환에 대한 취약성을 인식하고, 그림과 사진 자료를 이용하여 쉽게 이해함에 따라 구강건강행동의 유익성을 명확히 인식함으로써 긍정적인 행동변화를 유도하는 효과적인 교육이 이루어질 수 있겠다. 추후 변화단계별 다양한 동기요소를 이끌어낼 수 있는 구체적인 전략이 개발되어 실제적인 행동변화를 유도할 수 있는 구강보건교육이 이루어져하며, 다양한 건강행동모형에 근거하여 구강건강행동 변화를 유도하는 경로와 관련 요인을 검증하고, 관련 요인에 개입할 수 있는 전략을 개발하는 연구가 이루어져야 할 필요가 있겠다.

청소년에서 혈중 비타민 D 농도와 치아우식 경험 간의 연관성 : 2010~ 2014 국민 건강영양조사 (Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels are associated with dental caries experience in Korean adolescents: the 2010~ 2014 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys)

  • 본 연구는 국민건강영양조사 2010 ~ 2014년 원시자료를 통합하여 우리나라 10 ~ 18세 청소년을 대상으로 검진조사, 구강조사, 영양조사 정보가 있는 총 2,655명의 자료를 이용하여 혈중 비타민 D 농도와 치아우식 경험과의 연관성에 대해 분석하였다. 1) 대상의 인구 사회학적 특성과 치아우식 경험과의 상관성을 분석한 결과, 남녀 모두 범주화한 연령이 높아질수록 치아우식 경험군의 비율이 높았다 (p < 0.0001). 여자 청소년의 경우 소득수준이 낮아질수록 치아우식 경험이 높았으며 (p = 0.026) 기초수급경험이 있을 경우 치아우식 경험율이 높았으나 (p = 0.001) 남자 청소년은 유의한 차이가 없었다. 2) 혈중 25(OH)D 농도가 1 ng/mL증가할 때마다 우식경험 치아개수는 남자 청소년의 경우 0.059개씩 감소하는 것으로 나타났고 (p = 0.007, $R^2=0.009$) 여자 청소년의 경우 0.08개씩 감소하는 것으로 나타났으나 (p = 0.005, $R^2=0.010$) 보정 후 이러한 관련성이 통계적으로 유의하지 않았다. 3) 혈중 비타민 D 상태와 치아우식증 경험율간의 연관성을 알아본 결과 교란변수를 보정하지 않은 경우 남자 청소년에서 혈중 25(OH)D 농도가 30.0 ng/mL 이상인 군 대비 10.0 ng/mL 이상 20.0 ng/mL 미만인 군은 2.878배 (OR = 2.878, 95% CI = 1.106-7.491), 10.0 ng/mL미만인 군은 3.877배 (OR = 3.877, 95% CI = 1.250-12.028)로 치아우식 경험율이 증가하였다. 연령, 가구소득, 기초수급여부, 칫솔질횟수, 치과병의원 방문여부를 보정한 경우 혈중 25(OH)D 농도가 30.0 ng/mL 이상인 군 대비 20.0 ng/mL 이상 30.0 ng/mL 미만인 군에서 2.577배 (OR = 2.577, 95% CI = 1.013-6.557)로 치아우식 경험율이 증가하였으나 여자 청소년의 경우 유의한 연관성을 보이지 않았다. 결과적으로 혈중 비타민 D 수치가 치아우식 경험과 관련성이 있음을 시사하며 적절한 비타민 D 농도 유지의 중요성을 인식하고 향후 이를 위해 식사지침에 대한 연구 및 영양교육이 필요할 것이다.

Indoor Exposure and Health Risk of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Public Facilities, Korea

  • In the study, pollution levels of indoor polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in public facilities (vapor phase or particulate phase) were evaluated, and a health risk assessment (HRA) was carried out based on exposure scenarios. Public facilities in Korea covered by the law, including underground subway stations, funeral halls, child care facilities, internet cafes (PC-rooms), and exhibition facilities (6 locations for each type of facility, for a total of 48 locations), were investigated for indoor assessment. For the HRA, individual excess cancer risk (ECR) was estimated by applying main toxic equivalency factor (TEF) values suggested in previous studies. Among the eight public facilities, internet cafes showed the highest average $PM_{2.5}$ concentration at $110.0{\mu}g/m^3$ (range: $83.5-138.5{\mu}g/m^3$). When assuming a risk of facility exposure time based upon the results of the surveys for each public facility, the excess cancer risk using the benzo(a)pyrene indicator assessment method was estimated to be $10^{-7}-10^{-6}$ levels for each facility. Based on the risk associated with various TEF values, the excess cancer risk based upon the seven types cancer EPA (1993) and Malcolm & Dobson's (1994) assessment method was estimated to be $10^{-7}-10^{-5}$ for each facility. The excess cancer risk estimated from the TEF EPA (2010) assessment was the highest: $10^{-7}-10^{-4}$ for each facility. This is due to the 10-fold difference between the TEF of dibenzo(a,e)fluoranthene in 2010 and in 1994. The internet cafes where smoking was the clear pollutant showed the highest risk level of $10^{-4}$, which exceeded the World Health Organization's recommended risk of $1{\times}10^{-6}$. All facilities, with the exception of internet cafes, showed a $10^{-6}$ risk level. However, when the TEFs values of the US EPA (2010) were applied, the risk of most facilities in this study exceeded $1{\times}10^{-6}$.

다문화 가정 이주 여성을 위한 구강관리 프로그램의 효과 (Effects of oral care program for multi-cultural women)

  • 최근 우리나라는 국제결혼이 증가함에 따라 다문화 여성 인구가 늘어나고 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 구강관리 프로그램을 통하여 다문화 여성의 구강 건강 상태를 추적 조사함으로써 구강건강 상태를 파악하여 개선점 및 이와 관련되는 요인들을 조사하여 향후 다문화가족의 구강관리 프로그램을 구축하는데 도움이 되고자 하였다. 연구 대상자는 대구광역시 다문화 가족 센터에서 모집하여, 1년 동안 지역의 치과 병.의원과 연계하여 필요한 치료를 받도록 하였다. 전체 참가자 608명 중에서 1년간 추적조사 한 표본은 40명이었다. 면접조사로 사회 경제적 수준과 구강 상태에 관한 일반적인 특성에 대하여 알아보았고, 구강 검사를 실시하여 치아우식증과 치주 건강 상태를 알아보았다. 통계 분석은 SPSS 20.0 프로그램을 이용하여 분석하였다. 구강관리 프로그램의 전과 후 결과를 비교 하였을 때, 1년 동안 DMFS, DS, FS, DT, FT 및 CPI가 유의하게 감소하였다. 본 연구를 통하여 다문화 여성 및 가족에 대한 관심과 구강건강 증진을 위한 기초 자료로 이용되기를 기대한다.

장기요양보호사 양성프로그램 참가자들이 인지한 직업특성 및 대상자 특성 (The Perceived Occupational and Clients' Natures by the Participants of the Long-term Care-services Providers' Education in Korea)

  • 목적: 본 연구는 요양보호사 교육 수료생들을 대상으로 요양보호사의 업무 인지와 요양보호서비스 대상자 인지 정도를 예측변인들을 통해 검증함으로써 요양보호사가 인지하는 직업의 전문성 정도를 파악하는 것을 연구목적으로 한다. 방법: 응답자가 직접 기입하는 '자기기입식질문지법'을 이용하였고 불성실 응답 및 다문항 미기재 설문지를 제외한 총 2백83부를 분석에 사용하였다. 관련요소들의 기술적 통계를 통해 요양보호사 업무에 대한 인지 정도 및 서비스 대상자의 특성에 대한 인지 정도를 살펴보았다. 그리고 위 두 변수와 관련 요소들간의 상관관계를 알아보고, 어떠한 요소가 요양보호사 업무에 대한 인지 정도 및 서비스 대상자의 특성에 영향력을 갖는지 알아보기 위하여 다단계회귀분석을 실시하였다. 결과: 요양보호사 업무 인지에 관한 단계적 회귀분석에서 요양보호사는 전문직업이다(${\beta}$=.300)와 업무 특성에 관한 지식을 갖고 있다(${\beta}$=.254)가 유의미하게 나타났다. 또한 요양보호서비스 대상자 특성에 관한 단계적 회귀분석 결과로 가족들의 지지(${\beta}$=.187)와 요양보호사 업무인지 정도(${\beta}$=.509)가 유의미한 변인으로 밝혀졌다. 결론: 이상의 결과를 통해 본 연구에서 제기한 요양보호사 업무에 대한 인지정도 및 서비스 대상자 특성에 영향력을 갖는지에 대한 연구결과를 제시하였다.

Prevalence of Intestinal Helminths among Inhabitants of Cambodia (2006-2011)

  • In order to investigate the status of intestinal helminthic infections in Cambodia, epidemiological surveys were carried out on a national scale, including 19 provinces. A total of 32,201 fecal samples were collected from schoolchildren and adults between 2006 and 2011 and examined once by the Kato-Katz thick smear technique. The overall egg positive rate of intestinal helminths was 26.2%. The prevalence of hookworms was the highest (9.6%), followed by that of Opisthorchis viverrini/minute intestinal flukes (Ov/MIF) (5.7%), Ascaris lumbricoides (4.6%), and Trichuris trichiura (4.1%). Other types of parasites detected were Enterobius vermicularis (1.1%), Taenia spp. (0.4%), and Hymenolepis spp. (0.2%). The northwestern regions such as the Siem Reap, Oddar Meanchey, and Banteay Meanchey Provinces showed higher prevalences (17.4-22.3%) of hookworms than the other localities. The southwestern areas, including Koh Kong and Preah Sihanouk Provinces showed higher prevalences of A. lumbricoides (17.5-19.2%) and T. trichiura (6.1-21.0%). Meanwhile, the central and southern areas, in particular, Takeo and Kampong Cham Provinces, showed high prevalences of Ov/MIF (23.8-24.0%). The results indicate that a considerably high prevalence of intestinal helminths has been revealed in Cambodia, and thus sustained national parasite control projects are necessary to reduce morbidity due to parasitic infections in Cambodia.

Seroreactivity to Q Fever Among Slaughterhouse Workers in South Korea

  • Objectives: Q fever is a zoonotic disease that occurs worldwide; however, little is known about its prevalence in South Korea. We attempted to determine the prevalence of Q fever seroreactivity among Korean slaughterhouse workers and the risk factors for seroreactivity according to the type of work. Methods: The study was conducted among 1503 workers at a total of 73 slaughterhouses and 62 residual-product disposal plants. During the study period, sites were visited and surveys were administered to employees involved in slaughterhouse work, and serological tests were performed on blood samples by indirect immunofluorescence assays. Serological samples were grouped by job classification into those of slaughter workers, residual-product handlers, inspectors and inspection assistants, and grading testers and testing assistants. Employee risk factors were analyzed according to the type of work. Results: Out of 1481 study subjects who provided a blood sample, 151 (10.2%) showed reactive antibodies. When these results were analyzed in accordance with the type of work, the result of slaughter workers (11.3%) was similar to the result of residual-product handlers (11.4%), and the result of inspectors and assistants (5.3%) was similar to the result of grading testers and assistants (5.4%). Among those who answered in the affirmative to the survey question, "Has there been frequent contact between cattle blood and your mouth while working?" the proportions were 13.4 and 4.6%, respectively, and this was identified as a risk factor that significantly varied between job categories among slaughterhouse workers. Conclusions: This study found a Q fever seroreactivity rate of 10.2% for slaughterhouse workers, who are known to be a high-risk population. Contact with cattle blood around the mouth while working was the differential risk factor between job categories among slaughterhouse workers.
