The subjects included 17 women in the experimental group, and twenty in the control group. This program was carried out for a total of four sessions, two hours per session once a week. The results were as follows; 1) Knowledge on sexuality, drinking, and smoking increased significantly in the experimental group compared to the control group (U=66.50, p=.001 ; U=23.50, p=.000; U=29.50, p=.000). 2) For attitude, only the attitude to drinking showed a significant difference between the two groups (U=76.00, p=.004). 3) For self-efficacy, only self-efficacy on drinking showed a significant difference between the two groups (U=55.00, p=.000). In conclusion, the health promotion program for college women increased their knowledge on sexuality, drinking, and smoking. This program affected their attitude and self-efficacy towards moderation in drinking. A even more appropriate education program on sexuality, drinking, and smoking for college women could be developed using this program by addressing the limitations in this study and repeating the study with a more varied sample.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the current problems of school health education policies and practices in Korea, and to establish the strategies to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of school health education program. The severity of adolescents's health problems including obesity, smoking, drug abuse, teen pregnancy, etc has been increased recently and coping strategies to deal with these problems became urgent. The role of school as a key setting for health education should be empathized. However, there were limitations for the effectiveness of school health education in Korea because of the lack of recognition about the importance, guiding principles of the school health education by the school health related law, life skill-focused curriculum, capacity of teachers for health education, and linkage between school and community. In order to improve the effectiveness of school health education, establishment of infrastructure, national and local health education standard, and operating principles for the school health education program should be provided. Life skill-focused health education curriculum should be developed for the effective health education. Teacher training and education also should be the essential component of school health education program. For the improvement of efficiency in school health education practices, cooperation with family and community support system would be necessary.

  • Objectives: This study attempted to apply the Intervention mapping and Transtheoretical models to develop a program to promote moderate alcohol drinking in university students. Methods: Surveyed data from 1,137 university students were analyzed to identify personal and environmental determinants for alcohol drinking. Based on these determinants, program objectives were established. Crossing the objectives with related important determinants resulted in matrices of learning objectives for which educational strategies were developed. Subsequently, an intervention program were designed to achieve those objectives. Results: Identified personal determinants included awareness, attitudes, self-efficacy and behavioral skills. Environmental determinants were binge drinking behaviors of family members and peers, and social pressure for drinking. Program, impact and learning objectives were developed to change the identified determinants. Program activities included provision of information on positive and negative consequences of binge drinking, opportunities for assessing one's drinking pattern, increasing outcome expectancies of and skill building for monitoring drinking, resisting peer pressure and managing stress. To facilitate adoption and maintenance of the program, an intervention diffusion plan was suggested. An evaluation plan was developed by utilizing RE-AIM framework. Conclusions: In order to expand evidence bases for effective theory-based programs, the developed program should be tested in diverse university settings.
