  • This paper investigates the characteristics of dynamic responses of floating structures with connections under sea wave loads. Direct method using higher order boundary element method (HOBEM) and finite element method (FEM) is adopted for numerical analysis. A 500 m-long and 250-m width very large floating structure (VLFS) with four units are considered in numerical analysis. Hinge connection and spring connection with various strength are considered as connection types. Displacements and stresses of VLFS according to the connection types are compared considering wave period and heading angle reduction.

  • This paper addresses the trajectory tracking problem for ship berthing using sliding mode technique. With significant potential advantages: insensitivity to plant nonlinearities, parameter variations, remarkable stability and performance robustness with environmental disturbances, the multivariable sliding modes controller is proposed for solving trajectory tracking of ship in harbor area. In this study, the ship position and heading angle are simultaneously tracked to guarantees that the ship follows a given path (geometric task) with desired velocities (dynamic task). The stability of the proposed control law is proved based on Lyapunov theory. The proposed approach has been simulated on a computer model of a supply vessel with good results.

  • A SMA actuator fabricated in this paper generates the large force and it's structure is very simple. The SMA actuator was fabricated by small size with diameter of 9mm and length of 27mm and also it's actuations toward all the directions can be acquired because of three springs which was fabricated with diameter of 2.4mm and 28 turns. We showed into applicability to smart catheter by analysing accurately the dynamic characteristics such as heading angle, force, displacement.

  • Dynamic Positioning(DP) system maintains ship's position (fixed location or predetermined track) exclusively by means of CPPs and thrusters. To generate the control input adequate to various situation an integrated controller for CPPs and thrusters is required. The integrated controller is composed of a thrust calculation algorithm and a thrust allocation algorithm. The thrust calculation algorithm generates thrusts in the surge direction and the sway direction from the desired forward and lateral speed and generates a moment about the yaw axis from desired heading angle. The thrust allocation algorithm allocates the generated thrusts and moment to each CPP and thruster. Computer simulations are executed to confirm the effectiveness of the suggested controller.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a crop-row detector which can be applied to an automatic row following control for cultivators or thinning machines. In this report, a possibility of new crop-row detecting method was discussed. This detecting method consists of two principal means. One is the hardware means to convert the two dimensional crop-row vision to the compacted one dimensional information. The conversion is achieved by a color line sensor and a rotating mirror. In order to extract crop-row , R and G signals of RGB color system are used. The locations of two different points on the target row are detected by this means. Another is the software means to estimate the offset value and the heading angle between the detector and the target row which can be assumed as a straight line. As a result of discussion, it was concluded that this detecting method would be accurate enough for practical use.

  • For navigation of a mobile robot, it is one of the essential tasks to find out its current position. Dead reckonining is the most frequently used method to estimate its position. Hpwever conventional dead reckoner is prone to give us false information on the robot position especially when the wheels are slipping. This paper proposes an improved dead reckoning scheme using neural networks. The network detects the instance of wheel slopping and estimates the linear velocity of the wheel; thus it calculates current position and heading angle of a mobile robot. The structure and variables of the nerual network are chosen in consideration of slip motion characteristics. A series of experiments are performed to train the networks and to investigate the performance of the improved dead reckoning system.

  • The Maneuvering Indices of a ship are the values that decide the quantity of her motion in turning when her rudder is turned over to an angle to the starboard or the port. They consist of two kinds of indices, one of which is called index K and the other, index T. Index K decides a ship's turning ability and index T does the length of time delay of a normal turning motion after her rudder has finished the turn of an ordered angle. Generally, the values of the indices are calculated through some mathematic formulas with figures of her heading degrees recorded at a fixed time intervals during her Z test. The values of the same kind index of a ship appear differently according to the ship'sspeed, trim, rudder angle and loaded condition, etc. In this paper, the author analyzed all the amthematic formulas required to calculate the values of the indices in their forming process and examined them from the point of mathematics and dynamics and also actually figured out the values of maneuvering indices of the M.S. "HANBADA", the training ship of Korea Merchant Marine College through her Z test. The author supposed a case in which two same typed ships as the "HANBADA" in size, shape and conditions were approaching each other in meeting end on situation and each ship turned her rudder hard over to the starboard respectively when they approached to the distance of 3 times as long as the ship's length. The author worked out mathematic formulas calculating forward and transverse ship's motions within the above mentioned situation for the quantative analysis of the collision avoding action to certify whether they are in collision status or not. Applying the calculated values of the maneuvering indices of the "HANBADA" to the motion calculating formulas, the author found out the two ships were passing over each other with the clearing distance o 39m between their port quarters. With the above mentioned examinations and explanations, the author demonstrated that a ship's motion in any collision avoiding action can be shown with quantities of time and distance within reliable limit.istance within reliable limit.

  • A test miner named MineRo was constructed for the purpose of shallow water test of mining performance. In June of 2009, the performance test was conducted in depth of 100 m, 5 km away from Hupo-port (Korean East Sea), to assess if the developed system is able to collect and lift manganese nodules from seafloor. In August of 2010, in-situ test of automatic path tracking control of MineRo was performed in depth of 120 m at the same site. For path tracking control, a localization algorithm determining MineRo's position on seabed is prerequisite. This study proposes an improved underwater navigation algorithm through estimation of MineRo's kinematic parameters. In general, the kinematic parameters such as track slips and slip angle are indirectly calculated using the position data from USBL (Ultra-Short Base Line) system and heading data from gyro sensors. However, the obtained data values are likely to be different from the real values, primarily due to the random noise of position data. The aim of this study is to enhance the reliability of the algorithm by measuring kinematic parameters, track slips and slip angle.
