Redescription of the Japanese blacktail triplefin, Springerichthys bapturus (Perciformes: Tripterygiidae), from Korea (한국산 청황베도라치 Springerichthys bapturus (농어목, 먹도라치과)의 재기재)

  • The Japanese blacktail triplefin, Springerichthys bapturus, is redescribed based on three specimens (36.6~55.4 mm SL) from Soheuksan and Jeju Islands. This is the first reliable record of the species from Korea. The specimens are characterized by having 26~28 second dorsal spines, 22~26 anal soft rays, 27~30 anterior lateral line scales, and intensive coloration of head and tail.

  • Underwater acoustic transducers are widely used for SONAR application, whose important design parameters are shapes. materials, dimensions and supporting structures. Practical design method of transducers consists of manufacturing, experiments and modifications so that it requires much time and expenses. In this study, an analytical method was developed for the Tonpilz type transducers using the commercial finite element analysis code ATILA which can solve the electro-mechanical coupling problems. A finite element model was established including the transducer elements such as ceramic stack, head mass, tail mass, tensile bolt, and molding layers. The proposed model was verified and modified by comparing the in-air and in-water test results of prototypes. The developed analysis method will be effectively used for the sensitivity analysis of design parameters in transducer design process.

  • In recent years, the study of self-assembly peptide used in drug delivery system has been attracted great interest from scientists. In the category are self-assembly peptides in the structure either with one hydrophobic surface and another hydrophilic or a hydrophobic head and a hydrophilic tail. Here, we focus on a novel designed peptide EYK with double amphiphilic surfaces, investigating on the capability of peptide as a carrier for hydrophobic compound model pyrene. The fluorescence data presented the dynamic process of the transfer, showing that the pyrene was in the crystalline form in peptide solution, and molecularly migrated from its peptide encapsulations into the membrane bilayers when the peptide-pyrene suspension was mixed with liposome vesicles. The results indicated that the peptide EYK could stabilize hydrophobic pyrene in aqueous solution and delivered it into EPC liposome as a potential carrier.

  • This study reviews the work that has been carried out to date on the effects of train slipstreams, which begins as the head of the train passes and continues until after the tail of the train passed, on people and their belongings on station platforms. Recorded incidents in UK involving station users and their property on station platforms caused by train slipstreams are reviewed. Methods used by other railway administrations to manage the risk from slipstream effects on station platforms are described. Recommendations to improve the platform design of the risk are made. The extent to which design guides for assessing the risk can be developed is considered.

Eimeria pipistrellus n. sp. from Pipistrellus kuhlii (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae) in Saudi Arabia

  • Fecal samples from 12 Pipistrellus kuhlii captured at Shagrah, Saudi Arabia, were examined for coccidia and three (25%) found to harbor a undescribed eimerian, herein described as Eimeria pipistrellus n. sp. Sporulated oocysts were sub spherical. $24.8{\times}23.2{\;}(22-27{\times}20-25){\;}\mu\textrm{m}$, with a bilayered and smooth wall. The micropyle was absent, but a large oocyst residuum and a single polar granule were present. Sporocysts were ovoid, 11.6{\times}8.3 (10.5-13{\times}7.5-9) Jim, with a prominent Stieda body, but without a substiedal body; sporozoites lay head to tail in sporocysts and contained one large posterior refractile body. Eimeria pipistrellus n. sp. is the 3rd species of the genus Eimeria found from bats of the genus Pipistrellus.

Morphological Description and Molecular Identification of Juvenile Peristedion liorhynchus (Peristediidae, Pisces) from Jeju-do Island, Korea (한국 제주도 근해에서 출현한 황성대과(Peristediidae) 어류 1미기록종, Peristedion liorhynchus 치어의 형태기재 및 분자동정)

  • In April 2019, a single Peristediidae juvenile (14.1 mm SL) was collected from the waters off of Jeju-do Island, Korea. DNA barcoding identified the juvenile as Peristedion liorhynchus, an unrecorded species in Korea. P. liorhynchus has eight dorsal fin spines, 22 dorsal and 19 anal fin rays, and a long third pectoral fin ray that passes through the middle of the tail at the juvenile stage. Juvenile also have large heads, extensive head spination, and serrated edges on the ocular and parietal spines. This is the first record of P. liorhynchus in Korea; therefore, we propose the new Korean name, "Nam-bang-hwang-seong-dae".

Teratogenic and Embryotoxic Effects of Clomiphene Citrate in Developing Mice

  • The objective of this study was to assess the teratogenic and embryotoxic effects of clomiphene citrate in mice. The pregnant mice were administered a single dose of clomiphene citrate at different concentrations i.e 1.0, 2.0, 4.0 and 6.0 ${\mu}g/g$ BW on day 8 of gestation. Fetuses recovered on day 18 of gestation were analyzed on morphological, morphometric and histological basis. Morphological observations showed defects like open eyelids, anophthalmia, fore and hindlimb micromelia, meromelia, amelia, sacral hygroma, hydrocephaly, hemorrhagic spots, kyphosis and clubbed feet. Morphometric analysis indicated a significant (p<0.001) reduction in fetal body weight, crown rump length, head circumference, eye circumference, forelimb and hindlimb lengths and tail size against controls. The histological observations showed brain defects like hydrocephaly, enlarged ventricles and undifferentiated neuroglial cells in cerebellum. Cleft palate, underdeveloped pharynx and atrophy of jaw muscles were the common anatomical defects of pharyngeal region. It is concluded that the concentrations of clomiphene citrate used during the present study proved teratogenic in mice fetuses.

Development of a Automated Noncontact Weighing System for Pigs (돼지의 자동 비접촉 체중계측 시스템 개발)

  • A automated noncontact weight system for pigs consisted of a CCD-type video camera and 10 photo sensors connected to a computer. In the experiment 20 pigs(Large Yorkshire $\times$ Landrace breed) weighing from 95kg to 115kg were used. Pig's original image data was transformed to a binary image an image excluding head and tail portion from the whole binary image and the area of pig was calculated. Then pig's volume was calculated by multiplying the area by the body hight measured with photo sensors. The correlation equation between the above volume(x) and pig's weight was y=0.0007 x -9.2152($R^2$=0.9965) Performance of a automated noncontact weighing system for pigs was tested with this equation. The results showed $\pm$0.65kg average error and 1.63kg maximum error. It was concluded that performance of a automated noncontact weighing system is excellent.

Origin of the Cometary Structure of the HVCs: 3D-MHD Numerical Simulations

  • Here were continue the MHD study started by Santillan et al (1999) for the interaction of high-velocity clouds (HVCs) with the magnetized thick gaseous disk of our Galaxy. We use the MHD code ZEUS-3D and perform 3D-numerical simulations of this interaction, and study the formation of head-tail structures in HVCs. Our results show that clouds located above 2 kpc from mindplane present velocity and column density gradients with a cometary structure that is similar to those observed in 21 cm emission
