  • Images taken in haze weather are characteristic of low contrast and poor visibility. The process of reconstructing clear-weather image from a hazy image is called dehazing. The main challenge of image dehazing is to estimate the transmission map or depth map for an input hazy image. In this paper, we propose a single image dehazing method by utilizing the Generative Adversarial Network(GAN) for accurate depth map estimation. The proposed GAN model is trained to learn a nonlinear mapping between the input hazy image and corresponding depth map. With the trained model, first the depth map of the input hazy image is estimated and used to compute the transmission map. Then a guided filter is utilized to preserve the important edge information of the hazy image, thus obtaining a refined transmission map. Finally, the haze-free image is recovered via atmospheric scattering model. Although the proposed GAN model is trained on synthetic indoor images, it can be applied to real hazy images. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves superior dehazing results against the state-of-the-art algorithms on both the real hazy images and the synthetic hazy images, in terms of quantitative performance and visual performance.

  • The visibility deteriorates in hazy weather and it is difficult to accurately recognize information captured by the camera. Research is being actively conducted to remove haze so that camera-based applications such as object localization/detection and lane recognition can operate normally even in hazy weather. In this paper, we propose a nonlinear model for depth map estimation through an extensive analysis that the difference between brightness and saturation in hazy image increases non-linearly with the depth of the image. The quantitative evaluation(MSE, SSIM, TMQI) shows that the proposed haze removal method based on the nonlinear model is superior to other state-of-the-art methods.

  • Image semantic segmentation and dehazing are key tasks in the computer vision. In recent years, researches in both tasks have achieved substantial improvements in performance with the development of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). However, most of the previous works for semantic segmentation assume the images are captured in clear weather and show degraded performance under hazy images with low contrast and faded color. Meanwhile, dehazing aims to recover clear image given observed hazy image, which is an ill-posed problem and can be alleviated with additional information about the image. In this work, we propose a deep multi-task network for simultaneous semantic segmentation and dehazing. The proposed network takes single haze image as input and predicts dense semantic segmentation map and clear image. The visual information getting refined during the dehazing process can help the recognition task of semantic segmentation. On the other hand, semantic features obtained during the semantic segmentation process can provide cues for color priors for objects, which can help dehazing process. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed multi-task approach, showing improved performance compared to the separate networks.

  • To measure atmospheric temperature, water vapor, and aerosol simultaneously, an efficient multi-function Raman lidar using an ultraviolet-wavelength laser has been developed. A high-performance spectroscopic box that utilizes multicavity interference filters, mounted sequentially at small angles of incidence, is used to separate the lidar return signals at different wavelengths, and to extract the signals with high efficiency. The external experiments are carried out for simultaneous detection of atmospheric temperature, water vapor, and aerosol extinction coefficient in Beijing, under clear and hazy weather conditions. The vertical profiles of temperature, water vapor, and aerosol extinction coefficient are analyzed. The results show that for an integration time of 5 min and laser energy of 200 mJ, the mean deviation between measurements obtained by lidar and radiosonde is small, and the overall trend is similar. The statistical temperature error for nighttime is below 1 K up to a height of 6.2 km under clear weather conditions, and up to a height of 2.5 km under slightly hazy weather conditions, with 5 min of observation time. An effective range for simultaneous detection of temperature and water vapor of up to 10 km is achieved. The temperature-inversion layer is found in the low troposphere. Continuous observations verify the reliability of Raman lidar to achieve real-time measurement of atmospheric parameters in the troposphere.

  • Recently, autonomous driving technology based on object recognition and lane recognition has attracted attention. However, in foggy weather, haze removal technology is needed because it is difficult to recognize surrounding objects. The technology of removing hazy is currently being studied in many ways, and a single image based haze removal algorithms are typical. In this paper, we design the hardware for haze removal by estimating the hazy partical map. Proposed hardware architecture is designed to have a cumulative histogram based filter that does not affect the hardware size even if the window size of filter increases. The hardware design is implemented with XILINX's xc7z045-ffg900 as the target board.

  • This paper presents an effective single image haze removal using edge-preserving and adaptive transmission estimation to enhance the visibility of outdoor images vulnerable to weather and environmental conditions with computational complexity reduction. The conventional methods involve the time-consuming refinement process. The proposed transmission estimation however does not require the refinement, since it preserves the edges effectively, which selects one between the pixel-based dark channel and the patch-based dark channel in the vicinity of edges. Moreover, we propose an adaptive transmission estimation to improve the visual quality particularly in bright areas like sky. Experimental results with various hazy images represent that the proposed method is superior to the conventional methods in both subjective visual quality and computational complexity. The proposed method can be adopted to compose a haze removal module for realtime devices such as mobile devices, digital cameras, autonomous vehicles, and so on as well as PCs that have enough processing resources.

  • With the development of autonomous driving technology, the importance of object recognition technology is increasing. Haze removal is required because the hazy weather reduces visibility and detectability in object recognition. However, the image from which the haze has been removed cannot properly reflect the unique color, and a detection error occurs. In this paper, we use CIE1931 color coordinate system to extend or reduce the color area to provide algorithms and hardware that reflect the colors of the real world. In addition, we will implement hardware capable of real-time processing in a 4K environment as the image media develops. This hardware was written in Verilog and implemented on the SoC verification board.

  • This paper presents low-complexity single-image dehazing to enhance the visibility of outdoor images that are susceptible to degradation due to weather and environmental conditions, and applies it to various devices. The conventional methods involve refinement of coarse transmission with high computational complexity and extensive memory requirements. But the proposed transmission estimation method includes excellent edge-preserving performance from comparison of the pixel-based dark channel and the patch-based dark channel in the vicinity of edges, and transmission can be estimated with low complexity since no refinement is required. Moreover, it is possible to accurately estimate transmissions and adaptively remove haze according to the characteristics of the images via prediction of the atmospheric light for each pixel using joint bright and dark channel (JBDC). Comprehensive experiments on various hazy images show that the proposed method exhibits reduced computational complexity and excellent dehazing performance, compared to the existing methods; thus, it can be applied to various fields including real-time devices.

  • Contrast enhancement plays an important role in various computer vision systems, since their usability can be improved with visibility enhancement of the images affected by weather and lighting conditions. This paper introduces a histogram modification algorithm that reflects the properties of original images in order to eliminate the saturation effect and washed-out of image details due to the over-enhancement. Our method modifies the original histogram so that an additive term fill histogram pits and the gamma correction suppresses histogram spikes. The parameters for the additive term and gamma correction are adjusted automatically according to statistical properties of the images. Experimental results for various low contrast and hazy images demonstrate that the proposed contrast enhancement improves visibility and reduces haze components effectively, while preserving the characteristics of original images, than the conventional methods.
