The inventory maps of landslide deposits show where landsliding has occured in the past., and serve as a general guide to slope stability. Isopleth maps derived from those inventory maps, provide an economi¬cal means for the recognition of landslide activity and assessing the degree of landslide hazard in a large area, es¬pecially rural areas. GIS could generalize the methods of hazard assessment by means of isopleth mapping of landslide deposits. Isopleth maps of Secheon and Boreong areas, where the degree of landslide hazard is very high, show the mitigation of landslide activities remarkably by the remedial efforts during the period of 1978-1991.

Due to the localization process of offshore drilling system, ensuring safety has emerged as an important. Therefore, step by stem safety analysis about each development process of offshore drilling system is becoming compulsory. Hazard and operability analysis is a method that was successfully used for system safety analysis in industries such as chemical plants. Through this hazard and operability analysis study, to conduct step by step safety analysis accorsing to process, the study conducted hazard and operability analysis in Lp mud system, an area of offshore drilling system.
Through the survey on the current status of hazardous substances in laboratories, the research institute is designed to establish measures to improve the management of university laboratories and to create a safe laboratory. We intend to explore countermeasures by confirming and reviewing the recognition of the statutes in the "Guidelines for the Implementation of the Laboratory Pre-Hazard Factors Analysis" through the questionnaire. Although there are various parts to create a pleasant environment for a laboratory, the most important part is the role of a laboratory manager in the area where each and every one of the laboratory's directors is the "Act on the Establishment of a Safety Environment in a Laboratory", but if the laboratory is not to be accident-prone, the laboratory's responsibility is to be more secure. This research is intended to be funded by research to reasonably implement" Guidelines for the Implementation of the Laboratory Pre-Hazard Factors Analysis" before applying to universities and to protect field-based research activities and to reasonably reduce safety accident prevention and risk.

In the ocean area surrounding the Korean Peninsula, the undersea earthquakes have occurred frequently during last decades. The eastern coast of the Korean Peninsula is very vulnerable to tsunami attacks which occur along the Western Coast of Japan. In special, the middle areas of the eastern coast of Korean Peninsula have been damaged due to the Central East Sea Tsunami occurred in 1983. Thus, tsunami hazard mitigation becomes an important issue at eastern coastal communities. The countermeasures against unexpected tsunami attacks are not sufficient because the government policy generally focused on not preventing but recovering. In this paper, a hazard map based on the field survey and tsunami evacuation simulation is developed to mitigate tsunami damage at Imwon port, which was severely damaged during the 1983 Central East Sea Tsunami.
Almost every year, Korean suffered from the repetitive natural disasters such as typhoons and floods. During last 10 years, Korea experienced annual average of $50 million property damages caused by inundation. To estabilish the flood disaster counter plan, knowledge for flood damage causes based on the field investigations of inundated area is required. The field investigations is focused on technique to document and analyze the meteorological conditions leading to torrential rains, the causes and patterns of flooding, the performance of flood control structures in affected areas, the extent damages and the effectiveness of local emergency response and recovery actions. We did comparative analysis of field investigation techniques. As a major goal of flood hazard map design, one of non structural disaster countermeasures, it was expected to reduce flood damage losses by requiring local governments to implement land-use regulation that would result in safe building practices in flood hazard areas. This requires local governments to develop flood hazard maps to assess how to manage particularly vulnerable floodplain areas. In this study we suggested a design manual and the management system of flood hazard map.
The assessment of wildland fire hazard is the first priority to be considered in the prevention, extinction and control of wildland fire. For the standard to measure wildland fire hazard, the wildland fire Warning System is currently being used in Korea which computes the wildland fire occurrence hazard index through a stick weight to moisture conversion formula. It shows the risk of fuel substance being exposed to fire by meteorological factors. For a comprehensive assessment of wildland fire hazards by area, the major factors'hazards need to be measured and the assessment of wildland fire needs to be conducted through historical statistic examination. Therefore, the wildland (ire outbreak frequency and its seriousness of damage are analyzed through historical statistic examination to conduct the assessment of a wildland fire hazard, and then the calorific value of a forest is analyzed through differential scanning calorimeter measurement which assesses the comparative calorific hazard according to the geographical distribution of vegetation.
Volcano hazard mapping became a focus of scientific inquiry in the 1960s. Dwight Crandell and Don Mullineaux pioneered the geologic history approach with the concept of the past is the key to the future, to hazard mapping. The 1978 publication of the Mount St. Helens hazards assessment and forecast of an eruption in the near future, followed by the large eruption in 1980 demonstrated the utility of volcano hazards assessments and triggered huge growth in this area of volcano science. Numerical models of hazardous processes began to be developed and used for identifying hazardous areas in 1980s and have proliferated since the late 1990s. Model outputs are most useful and accurate when they are constrained by geological knowledge of the volcano. Volcanic Hazard maps can be broadly categorized into those that portray long-term unconditional volcanic hazards-maps showing all areas with some degree of hazard and those that are developed during an unrest or eruption crisis and take into account current monitoring, observation, and forecast information.
With the increasing number of women involved in social activities, beauty industry has flourished. More women than ever before are concerned about make-up, hair care, skin care, and weight control, etc. With the success and commercialization of beauty industry, unconfirmed beauty care services have been introduced in the market. However, the health hazard from diverse beauty care services has not been systematically addressed. This study has the following two purposes: 1) to examine the utilization pattern of diverse beauty care services; and 2) to examine the health hazard from beauty care services. For this study, two major universities located in Seoul area were selected. While 450 female college students were selected from one women's university, the other 450 were from mixed university. Using survey questionnaire, we interviewed with 900 female college students. The results are as follows: As for the beauty care patterns, makeup accounted for 78.6%, Skin care 49.5%, weight/body control 32.0%, hair care 81.5%, and cosmetic operation 14.9%, indicating significant high rates of makeup(x2=9.215, p=0.002) and hair care(x2=4.435, p=0.035) at both mixed and women's universities. The health hazard was measured using four questions. The past studies have not paid special attention to the methodological issue of how to ask health hazard. Depending on how to ask health hazard, the percentage of respondents reporting health problems varied. When the respondents were asked whether or not they had suffered health problems for a short period, over 60% of respondents reported health problems; when they were asked in other ways-1) whether or not they had suffered health problems for a long period, 2) whether or not they had suffered whole body problems, 3) whether or not they had permanent traces on skin due to beauty care activities-, the percentage of respondents reporting health problems dropped substantially to less than 10%, This finding indicates the importance of ‘words’ used in questions. The relationships between health problems and utilization of beauty care services were examined, using χ2 test or t test. We found that there was a significant relationship between health problem and beauty care.
Objectives: This study was investigated the characteristics of small-scale water works (SWW) in Gyeongnam area and conduct a health risk assessment of water-quality inspection items unfitted for water-quality standards (WQS). Methods: The characteristics of SWW in Gyeongnam province were analyzed using the data of SWW in the last three years (2014~2016) published in National Waterworks Information System. In addition, the health risk assessment for inspection items unfitted for WQS was carried out in four steps: hazard identification, dose-response assessment, exposure assessment, and risk characterization. Results: The total number of SWW in Gyeongnam area was gradually decreased from 2014 to 2016. In addition, drinking water sources of SWW were in the order of ground water, valley water, spring water, surface water, and river-bed water. The number of points unfitted for WQS in SWW by year was 22, 45, and 18 in 2014, 2015, and 2016, respectively, and a total of 112 points were found to unfit for WQS in SWW during 2014~2016. The hazard quotient (HQ) for fluoride, nitrate nitrogen, boron in the unfitted points for WQS was more than 1.0, and the mean values for turbidity and color in points unfitted for WQS were 2.38 nephelometric turbidity unit and 16.25 color unit, respectively. Conclusions: The HQ for fluorine, nitrate nitrogen and boron was more than 1.0 in points unfitted for WQS among SWW in Gyeongnam area, and the turbidity and the color degree exceeded WQS, which mean that there is a possibility of harmful impacts on the human health.
Strong ground motion attenuation relationship represents a comprehensive trend of ground shakings at sites with distances from the source, geology, local soil conditions, and others. It is necessary to develop an attenuation relationship with careful considerations of characteristics of the target area for reliable seismic hazard/risk assessments. In the study, observed ground motions from the January 2007 magnitude 4.9 Odaesan earthquake and the events occurring in the Gyeongsang provinces are compared with the previously proposed ground attenuation relationships in the Korean Peninsula to select most appropriate one. In the meantime, a few strong ground motion attenuation relationships are proposed and introduced in HAZUS, which have been designed for the Western United States and the Central and Eastern United States. The selected relationship from the ones for the Korean Peninsula has been compared with attenuation relationships available in HAZUS. Then, the attenuation relation for the Western United States proposed by Sadigh et al. (1997) for the Site Class B has been selected for this study. Reliability of the assessment will be improved by using an appropriate attenuation relation. It has been used for the earthquake loss estimation of the Gyeongju area located in southeast Korea using the deterministic method in HAZUS with a scenario earthquake (M=6.7). Our preliminary estimates show 15.6% damage of houses, shelter needs for about three thousands residents, and 75 life losses in the study area for the scenario events occurring at 2 A.M. Approximately 96% of hospitals will be in normal operation in 24 hours from the proposed event. Losses related to houses will be more than 114 million US dollars. Application of the improved methodology for loss estimation in Korea will help decision makers for planning disaster responses and hazard mitigation.
