  • As a result of analyzing the change of material substance of all sorts biochemically and comparing the control with ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation (800r, 400 min), incubating the silkworm egges (bombyx. mori. L.) as the objective in the process of growth of embryo shortly before hatching, the following conclusion has been found. 1. Glucose has shown the increase of 281.2 mg/g in control during the pigment stage and it has shown the increase of 179.6 mg/g in ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation during the same period. The difference in quantity between the former and the latter is due to the fact that the growth of embryo has been influenced by the radio active. Glucose has changed with phosphorus the other way round. 2. Control organic phosphorus has shown the increase of 5.23 mg/g during the Byong B or KI A in which organ and tissue in the embryo has been formed. Organic phosphorus in ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation has shown the increase of 5.73 mg/g during KI B. Inorganic Phosphorus has shown only a little change in the control and ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation. The phosphorus in both has shown a little quantity in the ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation in early period of incubation. After the Ki A embryo, it has increased rapidly and it has increased till the hatching more continually than in control. The about results of the research will be helpful and instructive to the betterment and improvement, breeding and management of animals and plants.

  • The objective of this experiment was to investigate the development of gastrointestinal tract and activities of pancreatic enzymes in White Roman geese. Thirty developing embryos at the 22th, 24th and 26th day of incubation and at hatching, and sixteen or eight goslings, half males and half females, at the 1, 3, 7 or 11, 14, 21 and 28 days of age were sampled, respectively. The weights of the yolk, gastrointestinal tract and intestinal length, and the activities of pancreatic enzymes were measured. Residual yolk weight decreased rapidly during late incubation and was nearly depleted at 3 days of age. The protein and energy contents in the residual yolk of goslings at 3 days of age were significantly (p<0.05) less than those at the late incubation. From 6 days before hatching to 28 days of age, the absolute weights of gizzard, proventriculus, liver, pancreas, small intestine and large intestine in goslings increased by 48, 457, 94, 2334, 89 and 76 times, respectively. The relative weights of proventriculus, gizzard, liver, pancreas, small intestine and large intestine reached peaks at 3, 3, 14, 14, 11 and 11 days of age, respectively, and then decreased gradually. However, the relative lengths of small intestine and large intestine reached peaks at 3 days of age and at hatching, respectively. The activities of pancreatic trypsin and chymotrypsin increased sharply from hatching to 14 day of age, and then decreased gradually until 21 days of age. The activity and specific activity of pancreatic amylase were increased following by age and peaked at 7 to 11 and 21 days of age, respectively. The activity and specific activity of pancreatic lipase reached a plateau from 11 to 28 days of age. These results indicate that the gastrointestinal tract and activities of pancreatic enzymes developed more rapidly than body weight through the early growing period of goslings.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the embryonic developmental changes of the pineal gland during incubating period in the Korean pheasant. The pheasant embryos and fetuses were killed after 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15, 19 and 23 (hatching) days of incubation. The morphological characteristics of a pineal gland were determined in all embryos and fetuses using the whole - mount technique, light microscopy and morphometry. The time of the first apparition of the pineal anlage, as a derivative of the roof of the third ventricle, was fixed at 3 days of incubation. The pineal vesicles appeared as solid mammilliform projections, which subsequently presented a central lumen, at 4 days of incubation. The pineal parenchyma was composed of the tubular pineal recess, the lobules surrounded with septum originating from the capsule and the follicles possessed central lumen at 23 days of incubation. The length, width and area of the pineal gland were increased markedly at 9 and 15 days of incubation. These results suggest that the pineal recess has an important role in the pineal development after hatching.

  • This study was executed to know the effect of three differently controlled temperature conditions on Huanren brown frog (Rana huanrensis )'s growth in 2013. We've collected nine Huanren brown frog egg's sacs on Mt. Surak ($37^{\circ}40^{\prime}55.86^{{\prime}{\prime}}N$, $127^{\circ}05^{\prime}19.99^{{\prime}{\prime}}E$) in Seoul. We put those nine egg sacs in the controlled growth chambers under low temperature (LT, $5{\pm}2^{\circ}C$), medium temperature (MT, $10{\pm}2^{\circ}C$), and high temperature (HT, $13{\pm}2^{\circ}C$) conditions with three egg sacs, respectively. We measured the eggs' hatching rate, their hatching periods, and the size of the hatched individuals. The hatching rate was higher in MT (95.6%) and the rates of the other treatments were relatively lower but very similar such as LT (82.2%) and HT (82.6%). The three hatching periods were 10 days at HT, 14 days at MT and 23 days at LT. The body sizes of the hatched individuals were biggest at MT ($7.62{\pm}0.11mm$), smallest at LT ($6.82{\pm}0.10mm$) and medium at HT ($7.19{\pm}0.15mm$) (P-value ${\leq}0.0001$). From our results, we found that the various water temperatures could be very effective to Huanren brown frog eggs' hatch and growth including their body sizes. We suggest if we study more about the growth of Huanren brown adult frogs under similar temperature conditions for a long term period, it must be very helpful for conservation study about metamorphosis rate and size of adult frog as well as we could understand about the amphibians who are adapting to the climate change.

  • Variations of hepatocyte in the larval liver of grouper, Epinephelus akaara wre examined to understand the effect of starvation during the first feeding period, 3 to 5 days after hatching. Total length of the fed larvae increased from the 5th day after hatching, although no significant difference between the fed and starved larvae was found untill the 4th day after hatching. Survival rate of the starved larvae decreased from the 4th day after hatching, and almost all of the larvae died by the 5th day after hatching. Nuclear size of hepatocyte in the starved larvae starterd to decrease from the 4th day after hatching. The sizes by 4th and 5th days after hatching in the starved larvae were 1.4 to 1.9 times smaller than those in the fed ones. Hepatocytes in the starved larvae showed irregular morphology in which the nuclei were irregularly shrunk and highly compacted from the 4th day, while hepatocyte nuclei in the fed ones maintained their uniform features during the whole experimental period. These results implied that the initial larval food should be supplied at least within the 4th day after hatching. Also, it suggested that the size of hepatocyte nucleus might be and indicator of starvation for wild and cultured grouper larvae.

  • Incubation routine and sex role of Streaked Shearwaters Calonectris leucomelas at Sasudo Island, in Jeju, South Korea, were studied during the incubation period, June to August in 2002. Incubation routine in Procellariiformes represents a sequence of alternating shifts taken in turn by female and male in a species-specific pattern. Hence, coordination of individual incubation rhythms between partners is crucial for successful breeding attempt. In Streaked Shearwaters, incubation routine represents a sequence of alternating shifts taken in turn by male and female. The first incubation shift was made by male after female had laid the egg. The mean incubation period was 50.8 days until hatching. Males had spent on average 26.5 days incubating and females 24.3 days accordingly. The mean duration of incubation shifts decreased progressively from 6th and 7th shift to hatching. Overall, males had spent more time incubating than females during the incubation period, but the mean duration of the incubation shift 5.6 days for males and 5.7 days for females did not differ between males and females. There were no effect of the body size of the breeding pair on incubation performance. For males the mean of body weight decreased during the incubation, whereas for females it remained approximately stable. In Streaked Shearwaters, the duration of incubation shift and subsequent foraging trip are related to loss of body weight during the period of fasting. In addition, coordination of individual incubation rhythms affects their incubation behaviour.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the growth performance between two different crossbred strains of Korean native chickens denoted as 1A and 2A compared to white semi broilers and Ross (RR) from hatching to 40 days. In total, 576 one-day-old chicks were allocated in a completely randomized design to give 18 replicate cages each (eight chicks per cage). The two-phase feeding program consisted of the starter (day 1 - 21: Crude protein [CP] 20% and metabolizable energy [ME], 3,050 kcal·kg-1) and the grower (day 22 - 40: CP 18%, 3,100 kcal·kg-1). The results revealed that 1A and 2A had a lower (p < 0.05) body weight (BW) from day 1 to day 40 compared with the other groups. A lower (p < 0.05) average daily gain (ADG) was observed in 1A and 2A during the entire period when compared with the other groups. The 1A and 2A groups had the minimum (p < 0.05) average daily feed intake (ADFI) compared with the other groups for the whole period. The RR had an improved (p < 0.05) FCR compared with the other groups during the whole period. The 1A and 2A groups were observed to have the lowest (p < 0.05) shank length compared with the other groups during the entire period.

  • As a result of analyzing the change of material substance of all sorts biochemically and comparing the control with ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation (800${\gamma}$, 40 Min), incubating the silkworm eggs (Bombyx mori L.) as the objective in the process of growth of embyro shortly before hatching, the following conclusion has been found. 1. Ascorbic acid has shown the maximum increase of 319 r/g in the Byong B embyro stage and in other words it has increased during the period of vigorous metabolism of the materials in eggs but it has decreased before hatching after that period. 2. Triglyceride has shown the increase of 27.54 mg/g in the Byong A stage, the early period of incubation and in other words it has increased in the period of activation of cells in eggs but it has gradually decreased during the growth of embyro after that period. Great change of either total cholesterol or free cholesterol has not been shown from the early period till shortly before hatching. 3. Free fatty acid has shown the minimum decrease of 257.4$\mu$ mole/g in the Byong A stage in which triglyceride increases greatly. On the contrary, it has shown the increase of 1, 020.0$\mu$ mole/g in Ki A stage in which triglyceride decreases. As a whole, the fact that free fatty acid increases according to the growth of embyro in eggs has been found. 4. Glucose has shown the increase of 281.2 mg/g in control during tile Pigment stage and it has shown the increase of 179.6 mg/g in ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation during the same period. The difference in quantity between the former and the latter is due to the fact that the growth of embyro has been influenced by the radio active. Glucose has changed with free fatty acid and phosphorus the other way round. 5. Control organic phosphorus has shewh the increase of 5.23mg/g during the Byong B or Ki A in which organ and tissue in the emhyro has been formed. Organic phosphorus in ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation has shown the increase of 5.73mg/g during Ki B. Inorganic phosphorus has shown only a little change in the control and ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation. The phosphorus in both has shown a little quantity in the ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation in the early period of incubation. After the Ki A embyro, it has increased rapidly and it has increased till the hatching more continually than in control. The about results of the research will be helpful and instructive to the betterment and improvement, breeding and management of animals and plants.
