Seasonal development of Parthenolecanium corni was observed from 4 Jun. 2019 (nymph) - 25 Jun. 2020 (1st Gen. nymph) in blueberry shrub in Sacheon city, Gyeongsangnam-do. To investigate their development, more than 5 twigs sprouted in 2018 were taken from the farm nearly weekly basis. The development of each scale were examined under the stereomicroscope and chemical control was conducted in the blueberry shrub with available three insecticides. The results on the development period and Centigrade Degree-Days accumulation (DDC) obtained are as follows: egg-laying period (peak): 12 -26 May 2020 (24 May)(DDC, 110.0-188.5 (173.6)); egg-hatching period (peak): 9 - 23 June 2020 (19 June)(DDC, 325.2-480.8(435.6); egg period: 26 days; nymph movement from overwintered adult to new leaves 16-25 June 2020 (DDC, 410,5-500.4); nymph movement from leaf to twig (peak) to become adult: 4-18 Feb. 2020 (8 Feb.). Eggs no. /adult (range): 956.8 ± 73.4 (13 - 3497). Size (mm) of egg, 0.29 ± 0.020(L), 0.15 ± 0.013(W); of egg-hatched nymph, 0.35 ± 0.018(L), 0.18 ± 0.007(W), 0.09 ± 0.007(eye distance); and of adult, 4.30 ± 0.893(L), 2.64 ± 0.520(W). The egg-hatched nymphs from the overwintered adult moved to the backside leaf of new shoot in which they found about 95% until leaf is falling by early February in next year. They overwintered as 2nd instar and occurred univoltine. For the control of the 1st instar crawler, three insecticides treated on 16 and 30 July at the registered dose for Ceroplastes japonicus. Acetamiprid 8WP showed 96.9% mortality at 21 days after 1st treatment.
This study focused on relationships between Pb and Cd concentrations and the difference of success reproductive progress in urban (Seoul) and industrial complex (Ansan) areas. Results of the Pb analysis for the feral pigeons from Seoul (egg contents:1.64 $\mu\textrm{g}$ wet $g^{-1}$, adults in bones: 29.5 $\mu\textrm{g}$ wet $g^{-1}$ and the Ansan industrial complex (egg contents: 1.13 $\mu\textrm{g}$ wet $g^{-1}$, adults in bones: 10.5 $\mu\textrm{g}$ wet g-1) showed that the Pb level of eggs and adults is significantly different between the two colonies (p<0.05). Cd concentrations in liver and kidneys of adult pigeons were also significantly different between Seoul(liver: 0.24 ${\mu}g$ wet $g^{-1}$, kidney: 1.05 $\mu\textrm{g}$ wet $g^{-1}$ and the Ansan (liver: 0.14 $\mu\textrm{g}$ wet $g^{-1}$, kidney: 0.43 $\mu\textrm{g}$ wet $g^{-1}$ colonies (P<0.05). Clutch size of Feral Pigeons living in Seoul was similar between the two colonies, 1.9$\pm$0.3 in Seoul and 2.0$\pm$0.0 in Ansan. The length, breadth, and thickness of eggs were not significantly different between the two colonies (p>0.05). Incubation period in Seoul (17.8 days) did not differ from the Ansan (17.4 days). No difference in growth rate (body weight, wing length, and tarsus length) was found between the two test groups (p>0.05). In Seoul, 65.2% were hatching, and 42.1% fledging. The Proportion of hatching and fledging in the Ansan was 60.7% and 45.0%, respectively. The significant differences between the two colonies for reproductive sucess were not found (p>0.05). With regard to the reproductive effects to the heavy metals, the Pb and Cd concentrations feund in the two colonies were not as high as those considered in results of toxic effects in other species.
To evaluate the physiological status of laying flocks, the blood chemistry values were measured and analyzed in various ages under different feeding conditions. Total 671 birds from 48 Hyline brown hens flocks from 13 different poultry farms were bled at the ages of day(s) 1, 11, 21, 50, 80, 120, 180, 240, 300, 400, and 500. The 17 blood chemistries including glucose, lipids, proteins, enzymes, electrolytes and metabolic by-products were measured with an autoanalyzer. Blood glucose showed the highest at the hatching day not relate with the dietary carbohydrates and energy, but tended to decrease during the rest of growth stage in hens. Total blood protein, albumin and globulin increased depending on the ages even though dietary protein was decreased. Blood lipid was greatly changed at different growth stages. Cholesterol was the highest at hatching period and maintained consistently until the 120 days of age. It was increased in birds after 180 days of age. HDL was also highest in hatchery, but decreased greatly after 180 days of age. However, TG was the lowest at one day old, but was increased up to 10 times after 180 days of age compared to that of one day old. The enzyme activities were different. AST, ALT, and GGT showed comparatively contained consistently, whereas amylase was slowly decreased. Blood P, Na, K and Cl showed consistency, but Ca content was increased upto two times of the one day of age. The results from this study showed that the blood chemistry values were affected by the general metabolic status of the host with ages not by feeding conditions. Further, the standard data of age-dependent blood chemistry values in the laying flocks were obtained, which can be utilized for early detection of the changes in the physiological status occurred by the infectious or metabolic diseases. The results of these analyses seemed to be useful to increase the productivity of laying flocks through rapid and proper veterinary medical treatments.
Gonadal development and maturation mechanism were studied on the freshwater marsh clam Corbicula papyracea (Heude), which is the endangered species in Korea. The specimens were collected in the rearing ponds and waterway of NFRDI in Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do from January to December 2004, and then investigated by condition factor, relative growth, gonadal development phases and gonad histological characters based on 30-50 individuals every month. Comparing with the freshwater marsh clam, C. papyracea is small, light olive brown shell and violet interior. The hermaphrodite individuals of C. papyracea take an internal fertilization and fertilized eggs are stored in the foster-sack in the gills, then the hatched juveniles are released outside after an ovoviviparous process. The average water temperature of inhabit area was in range of $1.8-27.0^{\circ}C$ and usually took great effects on the gonad maturation of C. papyracea. The condition factor ranged from 0.14 to 0.21 throughout the year, which was the lowest during winter season (December-February), and gradually increased to the highest value of 0.21 in May. The ratio of meat weight to total weight was 25.9-38.7%, indicating the similar trend with condition factor. The highest values of condition factor and the ratio of meat weight appeared 1-2 months later than gonadosomatic index reached the peak value, it was probably because that the ovoviviparous eggs would spend a long period before hatching from the foster-sack in the gills. To synthesize the characters of meat weight, condition factor and gonad development by histological study, reproductive cycle of C. papyracea could be divided into five successive stages: multiplicative stage (December to February), growing stage (February to May), mature stage (June to August), spawning stage (August to November), recovery stage (November to December). The smallest shell length of matured C. papyracea was 12.6 mm, and individuals, larger than 16 mm, was formed the nursery in the gills.
Larvae and juveniles of the filefish Thamnaconus modestus were reared for 64 days after hatching (DAH) in order to determine the activity of four enzymes (trypsin, pepsin-like enzyme, lipase, amylase) during ontogeny. Larvae were fed on rotifer Brachionus plicatilis from 2 to 26 DAH, Artemia nauplii from 10 to 64 DAH, and then gradually changed to pelleted feed from 40 DAH. Temperature was kept between $21.5{\sim}24.2^{\circ}C$ Activity of trypsin and lipase was found in larvae 4 DAH ($6.0{\pm}1.4unit$) and 6 DAH ($4.5{\pm}1.4unit$), respectively. The evolution of activity in both enzymes showed a profile marked by drastic increases between late larval and early juvenile stages. Pepsin-like enzyme activity was found at 10 DAH and drastically increased from 28 DAH, corresponding with the early juvenile stage of T. modestus. Interestingly, developmental changes in the pepsin-like enzyme activity coincided well with increases in the number of gastric glands. Amylase activity was found at 10 DAH and was maintained at a low level up to 28 DAH, followed by a drastic increase from 28 DAH to 40 DAH. It might be concluded that a drastic increase in trypsin and pepsin-like enzyme activities, and a corresponding increase in the number of gastric glands reflects a higher somatic growth of T. modestus during the early juvenile period.
To establish a database for artificial seed production of stone flounder Kareius bicoloratus, experiments were conducted to study the characteristics of spawning and fecundity of this species. Broodstocks were captured in the area of Gyeokryeolbiyeoldo, Chungnam, Korea in October 2003 and induced to natural spawning. The broodstock consisted of 12 females (34.5~51.0 cm total length and 540~2,200 g body weight) and 23 males (29.0~38.0 cm total length and 310~680 g body weight). Gonad development began in December and proceeded in the direction of the tail; measurements were made with the naked eye. The tank-held broodstock were reared for 3 months before spawning, which continued for 77 days from January 9 to March 27, 2004. Daylength during the spawning was recorded at the yearly shortest of 9.8~12.1 hours and the water temperature was maintained at $8.4{\sim}12.2^{\circ}C$. The total fecundity was 19,844,000 individuals, among which 15,433,000 individuals (77.8%) were produced during the mid-spawning period. The average bloating rate, egg-fertilization rate and hatching rate of the total number spawned reached 50.4%, 58.5% and 55.6%, respectively, and 93.8% of the hatched fry appeared normal. The number of total eggs in absolute fecundity per total length was proportional to both lengths, as was the number of total eggs in relative fecundity per total length. The number of total eggs in absolute fecundity per body weight was proportional to body weight as was the number in relative fecundity per body weight except that the number in relative fecundity per gram decreased after a peak in increased body weight at a certain point.
Host plants of the Henosepilachna vigintioctomaculata are known as Solanaceae plants such as potato, tomato, eggplant and Lycium chinense. Henosepilachna vigintioctomaculata (Motschulsky) cause continuous damage from early June to mid-August in leaves of L. chinense under environmental-friendly management in Cheongyang, Chungnam. The developmental period of egg and larva of H. vigintioctomaculata were investigated. H. vigintioctomaculata were reared on L. chinense at several temperatures, for example, 15, 20, 25 and $30^{\circ}C$ in the laboratory. In addition, the control effect of 5 eco-friendly agricultural materials were examined. As results, hatching rate is the highest to 91% at $25^{\circ}C$. Egg periods were 10.8, 7.7, 5.1 and 3.7 days at each tested temperature, respectively. And the total developmental periods from egg to adult were 42.7, 26.3, 18.4 and 19.4 days at each tested temperature, respectively. Otherwise, their eclosion rates from pupa to adult were showed 58%, 77%, 85%, 65% at each tested temperature, respectively. As a result of the control effect, both adults and larvae of H. vigintioctomaculata were shown a high mortality to mixture with extract of Sophora flavescens, Chenopodium ambrosioides and Melia azedarach. Additional, larvae is shown high mortality to extract of Azadirachta indica and Cymbopogon nardus. Thus H. vigintioctomaculata might be controled by using plant extract of eco-friendly agricultural materials in due season.
Paratlanticus ussuriensis oviposited from early July to mid-September under laboratory condition. A female laid on average 145 eggs during the period of reproduction and over 54% of the eggs were laid within 2 weeks after the first laying. The average depth of egg-laying in soil was 19.4 mm under surface. The average major axis of an egg was 5.7 mm and the minor axis was 2.0 mm. Just before hatching, the egg swelled about twice the weight of a newly laid. In tests of ovipositional preference in different types of media, more eggs were laid in soil than in vermiculite or in $Oasis^{(R)}$ floral form. Females also prefer shaded places in the field for reproduction, away from sunshine. In terms of the strategy for egg survival, adult moves to the hill-side adjacent to orchard farm to find a proper place for their egg laying and its survival in winter.
In order to standardize the juvenile abalone rearing technique, we selected sample farms by region in East, West and South coasts of Korea and Jeju island. We also have reviewed previous literature and visited farms to survey on the management of abalone juvenile production, spawning, hatching and so forth. Results of investigation are as follows: The light colors of tanks for larvae breeding are good for a frequent examination of larvae behaviour changes during the breeding period. The tank for the abalone juvenile production is a rectangular form in general and its size should amount to 3.5 m in length and 1.2 m width. It also should be built with proper drainage. The best age and size of adult for juvenile production are 3-6 years old individuals, with 9-12 cm separate burial and 125-150 g average weight. To induce spawning, the use of the exposure on air and ultraviolet ray together was the most effective. The density of larvae by plate should be 150-300 individuals and the proper stocking density was est imated and amount to 10-30 individuals. It has been shown that a correlation between water surface size($X_1$) and number of plates ($Y_1$), when producing abalone juveniles, is quite high and it is described by equation $Y_1=138.88X_1-5,736.8\;(R^2=0.9028)$. In addition, it has also been shown that a correlation between production of abalone juveniles ($Y_2$) and number of plates ($X_2$) is high and it is described by equation $Y_2=4.554X_2+12,493\;(R^2=0.8818)$. In Jindo region where a mass production of juveniles abalone has been done, it was shown, that a correlation between rearing water surface size ($X_3$) and production of juveniles abalone ($Y_3$) is very high and this relationship was described by the equation $Y_3=747.03X_2+94,359(R^2=0.9809)$. It has also been shown that a correlation between water surface size ($X_4$) and production of abalone juveniles ($Y_4$) in nationwide is high and the relationship between this variables was described by equation $Y_4=635.85X_4+99,923\;(R^2=0.9020)$.
Ecological study of the Cynoglossus joyneri was conducted based on the specimens from the western coast of Korea from 1992 to 1994. Ecological characteristics of this species such as gonadal development, occurrence of larvae, stomach contents, and environmental conditions were investigated. Few larvae of Cynoglossus joyneri occurred in Kunsan coast. This coast is influenced by the freshwater input of the Mangyong and Kum River, especially during the summer. Therefore, the larvae of C. joyneri were considered to be spawned and grown during their early life stage in the high saline water in outer bay. Spawning occur from June to September, having the peak spawning period from July to August. Biological minimum size of matured fishes containing mature oocytes is about 143.5mm in total length, which requires about 20 months after hatching. The ranges of total length by age are as follows : 0-ring group(floating stage), 30~70mm ; 1-ring group, 49.0~133.0mm 2-ring group, 128.6~167.0mm ; 3-ring group, 169.0~202.0mm ; 4-ring group, 200.7~240.0mm. The major food items of young fish under 8cm were copepods and invertebrate larvae, and those of adult fishes were annelids(polychaets) in winter, and bivalves and shrimps in summer and autumn. Therefore, it can be assumed that the population of C. joyneri could be reduced due to the decrease of food organisms caused by the continuous reclamation activities in the inner bays of the west coast of Korea.
