Front-end side members of vehicles are structures with the greatest energy absorbing capability in a front-end collision of vehicles. This paper was undertaken to analyze the energy absorption characteristics of spot welded hat and double hat-shaped section members under the axial collapse. The experiments were performed with respect to the various collapse velocities. It was expected that para-closed sections would show collapse characteristics which be quite different from those of perfectly closed sections. The collapse velocities were selected as follows: the velocities in the hat-shaped section members were 0.00017m/sec, 0.017m/sec, 4.7m/sec, 6.5m/sec, 6.8m/sec, 7.2m/sec, and 7.3m/sec those in the double hat-shaped section members were 0.00017m/sec, 0.017m/sec, 6.5m/sec, 6.8m/sec, 7.2m/sec 7.3m/sec, and 7.9m/sec. In the program system presented in this study, an explicit finite element code, LS-DYNA3D, is adopted for simulating complicated collapse behavior of the hat and double hat-shaped section members under the same condition of the collapse test. The validity of simulation was confirmed by the comparison between the simulation result and the collapse experiment.

The modern automotive industry develops innovative vehicle designs to meet increasing stability of car and performance demands of their customers. The improvement of frame rigidity by the structural foam is thought to be an effective means to improve the performance because of high applicability and minimum weight. The object of this paper is to examine the use of structural foam in a hat section as an optimum reinforcing means, to compare the reinforcing performance of structural foam versus a plastic reinforcement. The result of this paper indicated that reinforcing efficiencies are achieved by structural foam and plastic reinforcement shape.

The front-end side members of automobiles absorb most of the energy in a front-end collision. The front-end side members are required to have a high stiffness together with easiness to collapse sequentially to absorb more impact energy. The axial static collapse test (5mm/mim) was conducted by using UTM with respect to the single hat shaped section members which are the standard section shape of the spot welded section members, to the single cap shaped section members, to the double cap shaped section members and to the double hat shaped section members whose section shape are changed in order to give more stiffness. As a result of test, the energy absorbing characteristic was analyzed for different section shapes. That is, it was analyzed that the change of section shape influenced the absorbing energy, the mean collapse load and the maximum collapse load, and that the relation between the change of section shape and the collapse mode.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the collapse characteristics of widely used spot welded section members coated damping material Y1000 and to develop an analysis method for acquiring exact collapse loads and energy absorption ratio. Hat-shaped thin-walled members have the biggest energy absorbing capacity in a front-end collision. The sections were tested on quasi-static and impact loads. Specimens with two type thickness, width ratio and spot weld pitch on the flange have been tested in impact velocities(6.73n0sec and 7.54n1sec) which imitate a real-life car collision. As a result, it was developed the system for acquiring impact energy absorbing characteristics of structure united thin-walled member and damping materials.
The frontal crash optimization of S-shaped closed-hat section member using the homogenization method, design of experiment (DOE) and response surface method (RSM) was studied. The optimization to effectively absorb more crash energy was studied to introduce the reinforcement design. The main focus of design was to decide the optimum size and thickness of reinforcement. In this study, the location of reinforcement was decided by homogenization method. Also, the effective size and thickness of reinforcements was studied by design of experiments and response surface method. The effects of various impact velocity for reinforcement design were researched. The high impact velocity reinforcement design showed to absorb the more crash energy than low velocities design. The effect of size and thickness of reinforcement was studied and the sensitivity of size and thickness was different according to base thickness of model. The optimum size and thickness of the reinforcement has shown a direct proportion to the thickness of base model. Also, the thicker the base model was, the effect of optimization using reinforcement was the bigger. The trend curve for effective size and thickness of reinforcement using response surface method was obtained. The predicted size and thickness of reinforcement by RSM were compared with results of DOE. The results of a specific dynamic mean crushing loads for the predicted design by RSM were shown the small difference with the predicted results by RSM and DOE. These trend curves can be used as a basic guideline to find the optimum reinforcement design for S-shaped member.
The global demand for reduction in the weight of automobiles has led many countries to focus on the development of hybrid, eco-friendly, and electric cars. Reduction in the weight of materials can both increase fuel efficiency and maximize automobile performance. Therefore, the design of automobile should be inclined towards the safety aspects. but at the same time, it also consider reducing the structural weight of an automobile. In this study, CFRP side members with circular and double hat shaped section was manufactured. The impact collapse tests performed with change of the stacking condition, such as variation of interface number and outerlayer angle. The impact collapse load and absorbed energy were quantitatively analyzed according to the changes in section shapes and stacking condition. This analysis was performed to obtain design data that can be applied in the development of optimum lightweight members for automobiles.

In the present study, we aimed to obtain design data that can be used for the side members of lightweight cars by experimentally examining the types of effects that the changes in the section shape and outermost layer of an aluminum (Al)/carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composite structural member have on its collapse characteristics. We have drawn the following conclusions based on the test results: The circular Al/CFRP composite impact-absorbing member in which the outermost layer angle was laminated at $0^{\circ}$ was observed to be 52.9 and 49.93 higher than that of the square and hat-shaped members, respectively. In addition, the energy absorption characteristic of the circular Al/CFRP composite impact-absorbing member in which the outermost layer angle was laminated at $90^{\circ}$ was observed to be 50.49 and 49.2 higher than that of the square and hat-shaped members, respectively.

The front-end side members of automobiles, such as the hat-shaped section member, absorb most of the energy during the front-end collision. The side members absorb more energy in collision if they have higher strength and stiffness, and stable folding capacity (local buckling). Using the above characteristics on energy absorption, vehicle should be designed light-weight to improve fuel combustion ratio and reduce exhaust gas. Because of their specific strength and stiffness, CFRP are currently being considered for many structural (aerospace vehicle, automobiles, trains and ships) applications due to their potential for reducing structural weight. Although CFRP members exhibit collapse modes that are significantly different from the collapse modes of metallic materials, numerous studies have shown that CFRP members can be efficient energy absorbing materials. In this study, the CFRP side members were manufactured using a uni-directional prepreg sheet of carbon/Epoxy and axial static collapse tests were performed for the members. The collapse mode and the energy absorption capability of the members were analyzed under the static load.
This work aims to study the effect of stiffener ties in the behavior of intermediate length open section Cold-Formed Steel (CFS) Columns under axial compression. A comparative study on the behaviour and strength of Cold Formed Steel Columns by changing the direction of projection of lips (i.e., inwards or outwards) are also done. In this work two types of sections were considered Type-I section with lip projecting outwards (hat) and Type-II section with lip projecting inwards (channel). The length of the columns is predicted by performing elastic buckling analysis using CUFSM software. The theoretical analysis is performed using DSM - S100;2007, AS/NZ: 4600-2005 and IS: 801-1975. The compression tests are carried out in a 400 kN loading frame with hinged-hinged end condition. The non-linear numerical analysis is performed using Finite Element software ANSYS 12.0 to simulate the experimental results. Extensive parametric study is carried out by varying the width and spacing of the stiffener ties. The results are compared; the effects of stiffener ties on behaviour and load carrying capacity on both types of columns are discussed.
