  • REBCO coated conductors are widely used for HTS power application, high magnetic field magnet application, and etc. A thermal stability of the REBCO conductor is essential for the operation of HTS-based device, and thermal conductivities of the conductor are relevant parameters for modeling cryogenic heat transfer. REBCO conductors consist of a REBCO layer, copper layers for electrical stabilization and a hastelloy substrate. At cryogenic temperature, thermal conductivity of copper and silver strongly depend on the purity of the material and the intensity of the magnetic field. In this study, thermal conductivities of the laminated composite structure of REBCO conductor are evaluated by using the thermal network model and the multidimensional heat conduction analysis. As a result, the thermal network model is applicable to REBCO conductors configured in series or parallel alone and multidimensional heat conduction analysis is necessary for complex cases of series and parallel configuration.

  • The objective of this research were to produce amino acids from freezing-dried brown seaweed(Undaria pinnatifida) powder by sub- and supercritical water hydrolysis and to characterize the products. The hydrolysis was carried out in a batch type reactor consisting of 4.6 cm inside diameter and $200cm^3$ vessel and stir made of Hastelloy 276. A stir inside the reactor was continuously moving at 100 rpm. Brown seaweed powder and 100 mL of 1% acetic acid in distilled water were charged into the reactor at a ratio of 1:100(w/v). The applied conditions were $180{\sim}374^{\circ}C$, respectively for 1 hour. The total amino acid content was found to be significantly higher in brown seaweed hydrolyzed by low temperature comparing to high temperature. The amounts of low molecular weight amino acids(glycine, alanine, serine etc) were higher than that of high molecular weight amino acids. The maximum yields of amino acids were produced at low temperature($220^{\circ}C$) with acid catalyst.

  • PHE(Process Heat Exchanger) is a key component required to transfer heat energy of $950^{\circ}C$ generated in a VHTR(Very High Temperature Reactor) to the chemical reaction that yields a large quantity of hydrogen. Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute established a small-scale gas loop for the performance test of components, which are used in the VHTR, and they manufactured a PHE prototype made of Hastelloy-X to be tested in the small-scale gas loop. Results from the elastic structural analysis on the PHE prototype were reported in the previous article. In order to investigate the macroscopic structural characteristics and behavior of the PHE prototype under the test condition of the small-scale gas loop far more in detail, elastic-plastic high-temperature structural-analysis of the PHE prototype was carried out in this study.

  • A PHE (Process Heat Exchanger) in a nuclear hydrogen system is a key component required to transfer heat energy of $950^{\circ}C$ generated in a VHTR (Very High Temperature Reactor) to a chemical reaction that yields a large quantity of hydrogen. Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute has established a small-scale gas loop for the performance test on VHTR components and recently has manufactured a medium-scale PHE prototype made of Hastelloy-X. A performance test on the PHE prototype is scheduled in the gas loop. In this study, high-temperature structural analysis modeling, and macroscopic thermal and structural analysis of the medium-scale PHE prototype by imposing the established displacement boundary constraints in the previous research were carried out under the gas loop test condition. The results obtained in this study will be compared with performance test results.

  • We measured and analyzed the quench development in coated conductor(CC) tapes. The CC was grown on hastelloy substrates and has an Ag protection layer. The tapes were subjected to simulated AC fault currents for quench development measurement. They were immersed in liquid nitrogen during the experiment. The quench resistance increased rapidly first, and the increase slowed down afterwards. It increased linearly with applied voltage at lower voltages, and depended less strongly on applied voltage at higher voltages. The resistance was compared with that of Au/YBCO films grown on sapphire substrates, and found to increase more monotonously than the latter. Data were analyzed quantitatively with the concept of heat transfer within the tape and the surrounding liquid nitrogen. A heat balance equation was derived and solved, taking into consideration temperature dependence of thermal parameters of the tapes. Solutions, together with values of thermal parameters taken from the literature, explained the data well. Cooling by liquid nitrogen affected the quench development considerably at lower applied voltages. Dependence on applied voltages could be also understood quantitatively.

  • Corrosion of nickel-base alloys (Hastelloy C-276, Inconel 625, and Inconel X-750) in $500^{\circ}C$, 25MPa supercritical water (with 10 wppb oxygen) was investigated to evaluate the suitability of these alloys for use in supercritical water reactors. Oxide scales formed on the samples were characterized by gravimetry, scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results indicate that, during the 1000h exposure, a dense spinel oxide layer, mainly consisting of a fine Cr-rich inner layer ($NiCr_{2}O_{4}$) underneath a coarse Fe-rich outer layer ($NiFe_{2}O_{4}$), developed on each alloy. Besides general corrosion, nodular corrosion occurred on alloy 625 possibly resulting from local attack of ${\gamma}$" clusters in the matrix. The mass gains for all alloys were small, while alloy X -750 exhibited the highest oxidation rate, probably due to the absence of Mo.

  • The effects of the brazing temperature and homogenizing time for brazed specimens on the joint of Ni-based superalloys such as Haynes 250, Inconel 617 and Hastelloy-X were investigated. The brazing alloy is nickel base MBF 15. The foil had a thickness of $38{\mu}m$, which was used two sheets of that for the all experiments. The experimental brazing was carried out by a brazing process in a vacuum of approximately $2{\times}10^{-5}$ Torr, an applied pressure of about 0.74MPa and the three kinds of brazing temperatures were 1100, 1150, and $1190^{\circ}C$ for a holding time of 5 to 1440 minutes. Microstructural observations were made on the cross-sectional samples by using an optical microscope(OM), scanning electron microscope(SEM), and electron probe X-ray microanalyzer(EPMA). The tensile tests were performed at room temperature with a cross head speed 1.5 mm/min according to ASTM E8M. The results show that excellent joint tensile strengths of as high as 788MPa were obtained when processed at $1190^{\circ}C$ for 5 minutes.
