  • This paper presents a direct single-stage power converter using single-phase isolated full-bridge converter modules, with inherent power factor correction (PFC) for a 12 kW switched mode power supply (SMPS). The advantages of the proposed converter are its simple control strategy, reduction in number of conversion stage, low input line current harmonics, and improvement in power factor. Analysis of the single-stage converter is carried out in continuous conduction mode of operation. Steady-state analysis of the proposed converter is conducted to obtain converter parameters. A systematic design procedure is also presented for a 12k W converter with a design example. The effect of load variation on SMPS is also studied in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed converter for the complete range of load conditions. A set of power quality indices on input ac mains for an SMPS fed from a single-stage converter is also presented for easy comparison of their performance.

  • This paper deals with the optimum design of the stator and rotor shape of the interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSM) that are used in applications for automobiles. IPMSMs have the following advantages: high power, high torque, high efficiency, etc. However, cogging torque which causes noise and vibrations is generated at the same time. The optimum design of shape of a IPMSM was carried out with the aim of reducing cogging torque. Six variables which affect to the performance of a IPMSM are chosen. The main effect variables were determined and applied to the response surface methodology (RSM). When compared to the initial model using the finite elements method (FEM), the optimum model highly reduces the cogging torque and improves the total harmonics distortion (THD) of the back-electro motive force (EMF). A prototype of the designed model was manufactured and experimented on to verify the feasibility of the IPMSM.

  • Design aspects of a bearing casing system of a power plant are mainly focused on the strength and weight of itself to have a more stable system. Since the rotor speed often passes through the critical speed region when the operation begins, the relation between the rotating frequency of the rotor and natural frequency of the casing is very important for a prevention of resonance. However, harmonic components above the rotating frequency have often been overlooked the design for the resonance avoidance. In this paper, it is revealed that resonance vibration is generated when the natural frequency of a bearing casing is close to the one of harmonics of basic rotating frequency(1x), and as a consequence, sensing qualify of seismoprobes attached to the bearing casing structure can be seriously damaged. In order to reduce the resonance vibration, some stiffeners are added to the casing structures. Significant reduction in the magnitude of vibration corresponding to 2x harmonic of basic rotating frequency is observed from both FE analysis and experiment.

  • Seoul National University Flap (SNUF) blade is a small-scaled rotor blade incorporating a small trailing-edge flap control surface driven by piezoelectric actuators at higher harmonics for vibration attenuation. Initially, the blade was designed using two-dimensional cross-section analysis and a geometrically exact one-dimensional beam analysis, and material configuration was finalized. Flap deflection angle of ${\pm}45^{\circ}$ was established as the criterion for better vibration reduction performance based on an earlier simulation. Flap linkage mechanism design is carried out and static bench tests are conducted to verify the flap actuation mechanism performance. Different versions of test beds are developed and tested with the flap and chosen APA 200M piezoelectric actuators. Through significant improvements, a maximum deflection of ${\pm}3.7^{\circ}$ was achieved. High frequency experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance and transfer function of the test bed is determined experimentally. As the static tests are almost completed, rotor power required for testing the blade in whirl tower (centrifugal environment) is calculated and further preparations are under way.

  • In direct contact power transmission from primary driver to a secondary follower system, one of the important problems is the vibration transmission. In some applications the reduction of vibration level at the follower as low as possible is utmost important. The magnetically coupled power transmission system is often used for this purpose. In this paper, we report the results of a study on the nonlinear torsional vibration transmission characteristics of the rotating system with face-type magnet coupling. The equation of motion is solved analytically up to 3rd harmonics. The frictional force of the sliding bearing which is used to support the follower shaft is considered as the damping term. Numerical calculations are carried out by the Newton-Raphson method, and the calculated results are compared with the experiment for face-type magnet coupling. The experimental result shows that the reasonant frequency of the magnet coupling is very low and is in good agreement with the theoretical result when the average damping constant per unit area of the sliding bearing is 0.5kg*f*sec/cm$^{3}$.

  • In this paper, we propose a predistortion technique which uses a novel combination of the second harmonic technique and the difference frequency technique to achieve independent control of the 3rd and 5th order intermodulation products generated by the PA. The second harmonic and difference frequency terms are generated using an envelope detector and two frequency multipliers. The RF predistorter has capability to independently control of the 3rd and 5th order intermodulation products so that high power amplifier is optimized for linear characteristics. From the measurement results, over the frequency band 2137.5 MHz to 2142.5 MHz, ACPR reduction of 11 dB is obtained for a single 30 dBm W-CDMA carrier.

  • In this paper, a novel dead time minimization algorithm is proposed for improving the output waveform of an inverter. The adverse effects of the dead time are mainly described by the voltage drop and the distortion factor of waveforms. The principle of the proposed algorithm is organized with forbidding unnecessary firings fo the inverter switches which are not conducted even though the gate signal is impressed. The proposed methods are explained with the conduction mode of output currents. The H/W and S/W implementation method of the proposed algorithm are also presented. The validity of the proposed algorithm is verified by comparing the simulation and experimental results with conventional methods. It can be concluded from the results that the proposed algorithm has the advantage which is able to reduce the harmonics in the output voltages and which the output voltage can nearly be equal to the reference value. Another advantage of the proposed method is the reduction of total numbers of switching so that the switching losses of inverter drives can be minimized.

  • The V/F slip frequency constant control methods are used for driving induction motor with load commutated current source inverter, that is. constant V/F and slip frequency driving is used to load commutate the inverter below the critical frequency, while constant voltage and variable frequency and slip frequency driving are used in above the critical region. In order to applicate the load commutated current source inverter to the general use, speed control range of induction noter is selected to two times at rated frequency. Therefore, economical application is possible because of the maximum reduction of the condenser of the inverter output port. The use of the proposed force commutated circuit improves the false operation of force commutated circuit and inverter commutation failure which are produced by the influence of the lower-order harmonics of the conventional load commutated current source inverter at starting.

  • The design and performance analysis of a reduced rating autotransformer based thirty-pulse AC-DC converter is carried out for feeding a vector controlled induction motor drive (VCIMD). The configuration of the proposed autotransformer consists of only two single phase transformers, with their windings connected in a T-shape, resulting in simplicity in design, manufacturing and in a reduction in magnetics rating. The design procedure of the autotransformer along with the newly designed interphase transformer is presented. The proposed configuration has flexibility in varying the transformer output voltage ratios as required. The design of the autotransformer can be modified for retrofit applications, where presently a 6-pulse diode bridge rectifier is used. The proposed thirty-pulse AC-DC converter is capable of suppressing less than $29^{th}$ harmonics in the supply current. The power factor is also improved to near unity in the wide operating range of the drive. A comparison of different power quality indices at AC mains and DC bus is demonstrated in a conventional 6-pulse AC-DC converter and the proposed AC-DC converter feeding a VCIMD. A laboratory prototype of the proposed autotransformer based 30-pulse AC-DC converter was developed with test results validating the proposed design and system.
