  • The increasing use of nonlinear loads has resulted in an increase in the harmonic content of the load current for power transformers. Transformers subject to harmonic currents have higher losses and need to be derated. This paper presents a simple method for determining the capability of transformers to supply harmonic load currents and shows that the application of capacitor banks with a series connected reactor and harmonic filters will greatly increase the capability of transformers.. The EDSA program was used as a simulation tool for the case study.

  • In this paper, we propose a series active power filter control method to compensate current harmonics and unbalanced source voltage. The system is composed of series active power filter and shunt passive filer that are tuned 5th and 7th harmonics. In this conventional system, series active power filter complements drawbacks of the shunt passive filter, namely improves harmonic compensation characteristics, and compensates unbalanced source voltage. In the proposed algorithm, compensation voltage for harmonic reduction is calculated by performance function, and compensation voltage for unbalanced source voltage is calculated in based on a synchronous reference frame. So, ultimate compensation voltage is sum of those two compensation voltages. By computer simulation, we verify the excellency of proposed method.

  • This paper proposes new miniaturization method of parallel coupled line filter by using capacitors and grounding. Proposed method can reduce resonator size by using only a small number of capacitor and grounding of parallel coupled line filter which is conventional in field of RF filters because of its design and fabrication simplicity. This paper applies the miniaturization method of transmission line and parallel coupled line to parallel coupled line filter, and presents that grounding can reduce the number of shut capacitors. Presented miniaturized method has merits of miniaturization of parallel coupled line, harmonic suppression, and improvement of high frequency skirt with harmonic suppression. For verification of proposed method, this paper presents a hairpin filter, which has 900 MHz center frequency and 10 % FBW, miniaturized to λ/4 by proposed method.

  • In most grid-connected inverters (GCI) with an LCL filter, since the design of both the LCL filter and the controller is done separately, considerable tuning efforts have to be exerted when compared to inverters using an L filter. Consequently, an integrated co-design of the filter and the controller for an LCL-type GCI is proposed in this paper. The control strategy includes only a PI current controller and a proportional grid voltage feed-forward controller. The capacitor is removed from the LCL filer and the design procedure starts from an L-type GCI with a PI current controller. After the PI controller has been settled, the capacitor is added back to the filter. Hence, it introduces a resonance frequency, which is identified based on the crossover frequencies to accommodate the preset PI controller. Using the proposed co-design method, harmonic standards are satisfied and other practical constraints are met. Furthermore, the grid voltage feed-forward control can bring an inherent damping characteristic. In such a way, the good control performance offered by the original L-type GCI and the sharp harmonic attenuation offered by the latter designed LCL filter can be well integrated. Moreover, only the grid current and grid voltage are sensed. Simulation and experimental results verify the feasibility of the proposed design methodology.

  • This paper proposes a new miniaturization method for a parallel coupled line filter with enhanced bandwidth characteristics. A previous method incorporated several advantages, such as size reduction through the use of only a small number of capacitors, in addition to grounding, suppression of harmonic characteristics, and improved skirt characteristics for the parallel coupled line filter, which is conventional in the field of RE filters due to its design and fabrication simplicity. However, the previous method also has disadvantages related to the bandwidth shrinkage of the miniaturized filters. In this paper, the amount of bandwidth shrinkage is analyzed in terms of the relationship between the loaded Q(quality factor) and the group delay of a resonator. Moreover, the reduction in the bandwidth is solved by a design with new design equations. To show the validity of the proposed method, a hairpin filter with a center frequency of 5.2 GHz and an fractional bandwidth(FBW) of 10% was scaled down to half its original dimension by the proposed method with the enhanced bandwidth characteristics. The measured result shows a high level of agreement with theoretical results.
