Excitation Enhancement Based on a Selective-Band Harmonic Model for Low-Bit-Rate Code-Excited Linear Prediction Coders (저전송률 코드여기 선형 예측 부호화기를 위한 선택적 대역 하모닉 모델 기반 여기신호 개선 알고리즘)

  • In this paper, we propose a new excitation enhancement technique to improve the speech quality of low bit-rate code-excited linear prediction (CELP) coders. The proposed technique is based on a harmonic model and it is employed only in the decoding process of speech coders without any additional bits. We develop the procedure of harmonic model parameter estimation and harmonic generation, and apply this technique to a current state-of-the-art low bit rate speech coder, ITU-T G.729 Annex D. Also, its performance is measured by using the ITU-T P.862 PESQ score and compared to those of the phase dispersion filter and the long-term postfilter applied to the decoded excitation. It is shown that the proposed excitation enhancement technique can improve the quality of decoded speech and provide better quality for male speech than other techniques.

  • This paper presents the on-line current controller tuning method of grid-connected inverter using PSO(particle swarm optimization) technique for minimizing the harmonic current. Synchronous frame PI current regulator is commonly used in most distributed generation. However, due to the source voltage distortion, specially in weak AC power system, current may contain large harmonic components, which increase THD(total harmonic distortion) and deteriorates power quality. Therefore, some tuning method is necessary to improve response of current controller. This paper used the PSO technique to tune the current regulator and through simulation and experiments, usefulness of the tuning method has been verified. Especially in simulating the tuning process, ASM(average switching model) of inverter is used to shorten execution time.

  • An iterative technique based on orthogonal filters and frequency tracking is proposed to estimate harmonic components in power systems. The technique uses frequency interpolation to estimate fundamental frequency and harmonics when the nominal frequency of the signal is a non-integer value. Due to the number of computations involved during the generation of filter coefficients, an offline computation is suggested. Beneficial features of the proposed technique include fixed sampling rate and fixed data window size. The performance of the proposed technique is examined by simulating different power system operating conditions and evaluating the data from these simulations. A technique based on Fast Fourier Transform is also used to estimate the harmonic components for all the simulated signals. These estimates are compared with those obtained from the proposed technique. Results show that the proposed technique can converge to the accurate fundamental frequency and therefore, provide accurate harmonic components even when the fundamental frequency is not equal to the nominal frequency.

  • We have experimentally investigated the cyclic deformation in copper using ultrasonic nonlinearity. The observation and characterization of dislocation substructure have been conducted using transmission electron microscope and electron backscattered diffraction technique. The ultrasonic nonlinearity (${\beta}/{\beta}_0$) was measured by the harmonic generation technique after various fatigue cycles. The microstructural effect on the nonlinearity was discussed regarding the extent of dislocation substructures evolved from low cycle fatigue. The ultrasonic nonlinearity of copper monotonically increased with the fatigue cycles due to the evolution of dislocation cell substructures.

  • Programmed PWM(Pulse Width Modulated) generation techniques eliminating several low order harmonics have been widely used in the inverter circuit which produces minimum current ripple, reduced torque pulsation and thereby improves overall system performance. However, the applications of the programmed PWM technique are limited to CVCF(Constant Voltage Constant Frequency) applications and various motor drives. Although the programmed PWM produces a lower harmonic distorted waveform than the carrier modulated PWM, real-time programming is not possible because of the complicated calculation required for the gating signal. In this paper, a new programmed PWM technique named TAM (time averaging model) is developed to compensate for the demerits of the conventional programmed PWM technique with moderate harmonic distortion. Computer simulations are performed to verify the performance of the proposed algorithm.

  • The power quality of Single Phase Grid-Connected Inverters (GCIs) has received much attention with the increasing number of Distributed Generation (DG) systems. However, the performance of single phase GCIs get degraded due to several factors such as the grid voltage harmonics, the dead time effect, and the turn ON/OFF of the switches, which causes the harmonics at the output of GCIs. Therefore, it is not easy to satisfy the harmonic standards such as IEEE 519 and P1547 without the help of harmonic compensator. To meet the harmonic standards a certain kind of harmonic controller needs to be added to the current control loop to effectively mitigate the low order harmonics. In this paper, the harmonic compensation is performed using a novel robust harmonic compensation method based on Digital Lock-in Amplifier (DLA). In the proposed technique, DLAs are used to extract the amplitude and phase information of the harmonics from the output current and compensate it by using a simple PI controller in the feedforward manner. In order to show the superior performance of the proposed harmonic compensation technique, it is compared with those of conventional harmonic compensation methods in terms of the effectiveness of harmonic elimination, complexity, and implementation. The validity of the proposed harmonic compensation techniques for the single phase GCIs is verified through the experimental results with a 5kW single phase GCI.   • Second harmonic generation was measured in porous silicon superlattices surface which were made by changing and anodization current density and the anodization time periodically in the process of obtaining porous silicon. The technique of second harmonic generation is used as a probe to the surface of porous silicon superlattice by using Nd:YAG laser. We have investigated the surface structure and nonlinear-optics properties of porous silicon superlattice.

  • The surface characteristics of polymers for liquid crystal alignment are studied by optical second-harmonic genertion (SHG) tecnique. Using SHG technique, the LC monolayers on rubbed polymer have already been studied. But, in this paper, the SH signals of polymer were observed and the orientational distribution of oriented polymer was studied. Te SHG experiments for side-chain type and main-chain type polymers are carried out as a function of rubbing strength. The orentational distribution of surface molecules of polymers is compared with the LC pretilt angle measured by the crystal rotation method.

  • The spectra of scattering light fromlaser-produced plasma near its fundamental and second harmonic wavelength were observed respectively by means of spectroscopic technique. The experimental results and the generation mechanism of nonlinear effects such as the second garmonics and the brillouin scattering were analysed theoretically. The spectra of reflected laser light became wider than that of incident laser light. And the peak of spectrum of reflected light shifted to red-side from that of incident light. The second harmonic light is generated from the nonlinear interaction of the incident laser light and the electron plasma wave excited in resonance region by the oblique incidence of laser light to the plasma. The Brillouin backscattering from laser-produced plasmas of hydrogen and deuterium has shown an isotope effect in the red-side region of the generated second harmonic light. This isotope shift is explained by the parametric instability at the cutoff (resonance) region using frequency-and phase-matching conditions of the waves.
