In this paper, a new continuously and linearly controlled capacitive static VAR compensator is proposed for the automatic power factor correction of inductive single phase loads in 220V 50Hz power system networks. The compensator is constructed of a harmonic-suppressed TCR equipped with a new adaptive current controller. The harmonic-suppressed TCR is a new configuration that includes a thyristor controlled reactor (TCR) shunted by a passive third harmonic filter. In addition, the parallel configuration is connected to an AC source via a series first harmonic filter. The harmonic-suppressed TCR is designed so that negligible harmonic current components are injected into the AC source. The compensator is equipped with a new adaptive closed loop current controller, which responds linearly to reactive current demands. The no load operating losses of this compensator are negligible when compared to its capacitive reactive current rating. The proposed system is validated on PSpice which is very close in terms of performance to real hardware.
Distributed control architecture is based on sharing control and data between multiple nodes on a network Communication and task sharing can be distributed between multiple control computers. Although many communication protocols exist, such as TCP/IP and UDP, they do not have the determinism that realtime control demands. Fiber-optic reflective shared memory creates the opportunity for realtime distributed control. This architecture allows control and computational tasks to be divided between multiple systems and operate in a deterministic realtime environment. One such shared memory architecture is based on Curtiss-Wright ScramNET family of fiber-optic reflective memory. MTS has built seismic and structural control software and hardware capable of utilizing ScramNET shared memory, opening up infinite possibilities in research and new capabilities in Hybrid and Model-In-The-Loop control.
Position estimation that uses only active phase voltage and current is presented, to perform high accuracy position sensorless control of a SRM drive. By extracting the amplitude of the first switching harmonic terms of phase voltage and current for a PWM period through Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), the flux-linkage and position are estimated without external hardware circuitry, such as a modulator and demodulator, which result in increased cost, as well as large position estimation error, produced when the motional back EMF is ignored near zero speed. A two-phase SRM drive system, consisting of an asymmetrical converter and a conventional closed-loop PI current controller, is utilized to validate the performance of the proposed position estimation scheme in comprehensive operating conditions. It is shown that the estimated values very closely track the actual values, in dynamic simulations and experiments.
This paper presents a control algorithm for smart actuators that can be used in a 'steer-by-wire' system for next-generation intelligent automobiles. 'Steer-by-wire' is a network-based mechatronic steering system in which mechanical linkages and hydraulics are replaced by electric motors and a digital communication network. The algorithm is designed not only to achieve the capabilities of following the desired steering angles while minimizing the discrepancy between two steering wheels, but also to tolerate an actuator with faults. The proposed algorithm is based on a simple proportional control so that it can be implemented in real-time with a low-cost embedded microcontroller. The effectiveness of the control algorithm is examined using a hardware-in-the-loop simulator consisting of two DC motors and a CAN bus network.
Various HILS systems for developing and testing vehicle mechatronic systems have been proposed and constructed during the last few years. However, performance of those systems have not been evaluated in a systematic way. Based on the transfer function approach, this paper presents a method far evaluating performance such as stable dynamic simulation range of a proposed steering HILS system. In the evaluation, we have investigated effects of time delays that exist in the real-time dynamic simulation, additional actuators, and data transmission on the stable dynamic simulation range, simulation frequency range, and steering feel. This evaluation methodology may be useful to help engineers develop a HILS system for their own purposes.

The new engineering challenges lead to a control of a vehicle more and more complex. To tackle this issue, Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) simulation is used in the development of real-time embedded systems. In this paper, the control of a double parallel hybrid vehicle is validated using a reduced power HIL simulation. A graphical description is used in order to organize the emulation and control. Some experimental results of a versatile testbed are given for the Peugeot $3{\infty}8$ HYbrid4.
Vibration generated by the non-uniform road profile propagates though each tire and the suspension and finally generates structure born noise in the interior of the passenger vehicle. In this paper, the road-booming-noise which has strong correlation with the vibration signals measured at the suspension system was compensated. Active noise control of the road-booming-noise is rather difficult to achieve because of its non-stationary characteristics. CMFX LMS (Constraint Multiple Filtered-X Least Mean Square) algorithm, which can track non-stationary process rather well, is applied. Comprison of the proposed method and the conventional MFX LMS (Multiple Filtered-X Least Mean Square) algorithm is made through the hardware-in-the-loop simulation and the feasibility of the proposed method is demonstrated with the experiment.
Solar array simulator (SAS) is a special DC power supply that regulates the output voltage or current to emulate characteristics of photovoltaic (PV) panels. Especially, the control of SAS is a challenging task due to the nonlinearity in the output curve, which is dependent on irradiance as well as temperature and is determined by panel materials. Conventionally, both current-mode control and voltage-mode control should be alternated by partitioning the operating curve into multiple sections, which is not only for the measurement noise problem with the feedback sensing but also for the control stability issue near the maximum power point. However, the occurrence of transition among different controllers may deteriorate the overall performance. To eliminate the mode transitions, a novel single controller scheme has been introduced in this paper, where the reference operating projection technique enables simple, smooth and numerically stable control. Theoretical consideration on the loop stability issue is discussed and the performance is verified experimentally for the emulation of a PV panel data in view of stability and response speed.
This paper describes the dynamic modeling of a railway vehicle when it is under braking force. It is important for the enhancement of braking performance to establish a proper dynamic model of a railway vehicle because the braking performance is affected by some dynamic forces generated by a railway vehicle when it undergoes braking. In this paper, a dynamic model for one vehicle is suggested to compute the dynamic behavior of a railway vehicle in the HILS(Hardware In-the-loop Simulation) system for the railway vehicle braking devices. To simplify the dynamic model, friction between a wheel and a rail is assumed that there exist only the static and the dynamic friction forces. Static friction coefficient is also assumed to be a function of the running speed. Some simulations are carried out with various braking forces, and the braking characteristics according to the change of the braking force are discussed. This study can provide some fundamental results to construct the HILS system for braking devices of a railway vehicle.
This paper presents design and analysis of an HID lamp ballast for a fast turn on characteristics and stable operation. It produces a high open circuit voltage for the ignition and it is controlled to supply effectively the power required to shorten the warm-up period after the breakdown. The lamp modeling by empirical data is presented. It is very effective in the designing of the control loop in the steady-state operating region. A stable operation of the lamp power regulation in the steady state is achieved, which is crucial for the long life time and constant light output. Stability analysis of the system is performed and the results are verified through various simulation results and the hardware experiments.
