  • In laser heat treatment process of steels, the thin layer of substrate is rapidly heated to the austenitizing temperature and subsequently cooled at a very fast rate due to the self-quenching effect. Consequently, it is transformed to martensitic structure which has low magnetic permeability. This observation facilitates the use of a sensor measuring the change of electromagnetic field induced by the hardening layer. In this paper, the eddy-current electromagnetic field is analyzed by a finite element method. The purpose of this analysis is to investigate how the electrical impedance of the sensor's sensing coil varies with the change in permeability. To achieve this, a numerical model is formulated, taking into consideration the hardening depth, distance of the sensor from the hardened surface and the frequency driving the sensor. The results obtained by numerical simulation show that the eddy-current measurement method can feasibly be used to measure the changing hardening depth within the frequency range from 10 kHz to 50 kHz.

  • This paper proposes a monitoring method for nondestructive and in-process measurement of the case depth in LASER surface heat treatment process. The method is essentially an eddy-current method, and measures sensing coil's electrical impedance which varies with the changes of the material microstructure due to hardening. To investigate te validity of the proposed method a series of experiments were performed for various hardning depths. The results show that the relationship between the eddy- current sensor output and the changes in case depth is almost linear. This indicates that the eddy-current measuring method can be used as one of the possible monitoring method for mesauring the hardened depth in LASER heat treatment processes.

  • This paper proposed that the eddy-current measurement method can be used a means of in-process measuring the hardening depth in Laser surface treatment process. Also, this paper deal with the numerical analysis of magnetic flux distribution and experimental result of measurement. In Laser heat treatment process of steels, a thin layer of the substrate is rapidly heated to austenitizing temperature and subsequently cooled at a very fast rate due to the self-quenching by heat conduction into the bulk body, to produce a martensite structure which have low magnetic permeability. The eddy-current measurement method depends on the properties of material to be measured such as electric conductivity, magnetic permeability and geometry. In this paper, the hardening depth was measured by detecting relevant magnetic permeability changes caused by heat treatment of steels.

  • In laser surface hardening processes, the geometrical parameters such as the depth and the width of a hardened layer can be utilized to assess the hardened layer quality. However, accurate monitoring of the geometrical parameters for on-line process control as well as for on-line quality evaluation is very difficult because the hardened layer is formed beneath a material surface and is not visible. Therefore, temperature monitoring of a point of specimen surface has most frequently been used as a process monitoring method. But, a hardened layer depends on the temperature distribution and the thermal history of a specimen during laser surface hardening processing. So, this paper describes the estimation results of the geometric parameters using multi-point surface temperature monitoring. A series of hardening experiments were performed to find the relationships between the geometric parameters and the measured temperature. Estimation results using a neural network show the enhanced effectiveness of multi-point surface temperature monitoring compared to one-point monitoring.

  • The laser beam hardening has been experimentally tried to find the hardened characteristics of STD11. Experiment was performed on the optimum hardening condition with 2kW $CO_2$ laser. The microstructure of the hardened layers was observed using the microscope. The hardened zones exhibits very high Vickers microhardness of 720 Hv, however, the deoxidation was observed under the surface of hardened area. The case depth of hardened zones is about 0.6mrn and case width is 4mm. FEM-simulation on laser surface hardening of STD11 steel are described. With the proper assumption of the absorbed energy density, the calculated case depth and width in 2 kW $CO_2$ laser hardening were in good agreement with the experimental result. It was found that there is optimum absorbed energy density of STD11.

  • Case hardening behavior of carbon tool steel(SK5) was investigated after pulsed YAG laser irradiation. In the case od beam passes, martensite formed in the melt zone and in former pearlite regions of the austenitization zone exhibits vary high Vickers hardness values. The molten depth and width decrease as the beam power density increase. The influence of depth and width of color painted specimen was also investigated. The molten zone of the black painted specimen was the largest. The were loss of the black painted specimen was smaller than any other painted or raw material.

  • Surface hardening of plain carbon steel (SM45C) by Laser are usually much finer and stronger than those of the base metals. The present study was under taken to investigate the wear resistance and a processing parameters such as, power density, pulse width, defocusing distance, and molten depth for surface modification of plain carbon steel. The wear test was carried out under experimental condition using the wear test device, and in which the annular surfaces of wear test specimens as well as mating specimen of alumina ceramics($Al_2O_3$) was rubbed in dry sliding condition. It is shown that molten depth and width depend on defocusing distance. The wear loss on variation of sliding speed was much in lower speed range below 0.2m/sec and in higher speed range above 0.7m/sec, but wear loss was little in intermediate speed range. It depends on oxidation speed and wear speed.

  • The specimen for laser hardening have been carried out using SM45C which is coated with black paint or graphite for better absorption. Segmented mirror was used in order to produce a square beam ($10{\times}10mm$) at the surface with a homegeneous intensity distribution across the beam. $CO_2$-Laser power was changed from 2kW to 4kW and transfer velocity was varied from 0.1m/min to 2.0m/min. The maximum hardness and case depth of SM45C steel are 790Hv and 1.5mm by laser hardening. When the surface of specimens was melted during laser hardening. the surface hardness of SM45C steel was decreased. The surface hardness of 2 layer coated specimen(black paint: $15.4{\mu}m$, graphite coating: $9.5{\mu}m$) was increased than that of 1 layer coated specimen. It is desirable to prepare 2 or more coating layer on the steel surface in order to sufficient case depth and hardness in laser hardening. The graphite coating on the specimen surface was obtained more uniform temperature distribution than black paint coating in laser hardening process.

  • The earn shaft is very important for the safety of automobiles. The earn shaft needs a surface hardening process by high frequency induction to have both strength and toughness. It is required for safety of automobile to consider how the characteristics of tensile strength and toughness are changed according to the condition of surface hardness. In this study, we prepared surface hardened SM53C which is used as cam shaft materials. We examined the tensile strengths according to the depth of surface hardening and the effect of tempering. We also investigated the fracture toughnesses according to the depth of surface hardening(1mm, 2mm).
