  • Purpose: This study was performed to evaluate of practicum by using standardized patient(SP) for nursing assessment. Method: This study had 2 steps. The 1st-step was pre-intervention stage including selection of a learning title, formation of case scenario, training of SP and developing the evaluation tools for students' clinical competence to assessment, 6 categories 29 items. The 2nd-step consisted of intervention and evaluation stages. 34 nursing students divided 2 groups participated in assessing the SP. Evaluation of each group was performed by 2 nursing professors. All students recorded their feelings after assessing the SP. The SP also evaluated about nursing students' attitude toward the SP. Results: ICC(Interclass correlation coefficient) between 2 groups was over 0.7 all categories. Students' assessing score(range 0-1) was muscular-joint function status(0.41), nutritional status(0.39), history taking(0.38), IADL(0.18), ADL(0.15), and emotional status (0.07). The mean scores of the nursing students' attitude by SP was 4.03(range 1-6). Also most students showed positive reactions to the education using SP because they had the chance to experience what they could not practice in clinical setting. Conclusion: The evaluation tool revealed high reliability. Nursing students' clinical competence was below average. But they took a good attitude to SP. We recommended further research using SP with various disease.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a new fall-prevention exercise intervention for the community-dwelling elderly and to examine the effects of program. Methods: A total of 7 older adults were participated in a 10-week fall-prevention exercise intervention (1 day per a week in community centers, 2 days per a week in a home). The exercise program consisted of warming-up, extension exercises, muscle strength exercises, balance exercises, and finishing exercise. Data were collected before the exercise and after 10 weeks of exercise. In this study, muscle strength of lower limbs was measured by 10 times of standing up and sitting on a chair. Static balance was measured by one-leg standing, and dynamic balance was measured by 6 meter walking. Results: After a 10-week exercise program, muscle strength of lower limbs (t=4.18, p<.05), statical balance were significantly improved (left leg, t=-3.11, p<.05; right leg, t=-4.56, p<.05). Seven of 11 items measuring fear of falls were significantly decreased (p<.05), and dynamic balance tended to be improved (p=.117). Conclusion: This result suggests that evidence-based, fall-prevention exercise program can improve muscle strength, static and dynamic balance, and fear of falling in the community living elderly.

  • The co-pyrolysis characteristics of polyvinylchloride (PVC) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) mixtures with various mixing ratios and effect of addition of CaO and $Cu_2O$ have been studied using thermogravimetry (TG) and gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In an isothermal decomposition conducted at $500^{\circ}C$, the yields of styrene monomers and aromatic compounds increased as the mixing ratio of ABS increased, and the yield of BTX compounds reached its maximum (16.14%) when the mixing ratios of PVC and ABS was 4:1. In an isothermal decomposition added with metal oxides, the maximum yield of liquid product was 73% when CaO [CaO/(PVC+ABS)=0.4] was added and it was 70% when $Cu_2O$ [$Cu_2O$/(PVC+ABS)=0.4] was added, respectively, where HCl contained in the gaseous product was completely removed when added with CaO [CaO/(PVC+ABS)=0.5] and $Cu_2O$ [$Cu_2O$/(PVC+ABS)=1.0]. Therefore, to obtain the highest yield of liquid product it appears to be the reaction condition: the reaction temperature of $500^{\circ}C$ and mixing ratios of CaO and $Cu_2O$ are 0.5 and 1.0, respectively.

  • This study was conducted to determine limiting nutrients and the physiological characteristics of phytoplankton in response of nutrients in Lake Paldang from March 2002 to October 2002. A field research was conducted along with laboratory batch culture experiment to find the limiting nutrients and the growth kinetics. According the results of Chl. a TP relationship, TN/TP ratio, and nutrient addition bioassay, phosphorus appeared to be a major limiting nutrient in Lake Paldang and thus the lake productivity was greatly influenced by it. P limitation for the phytoplankton of Lake Paldang varied with season, and the possibility of limitation by nitrogen and silica also occurred. The degree of P limitation was greatest during spring when the concentration of dissolved phosphorus is relatively much lower than summer and autumn. The maximum growth rate (${\mu}_{max}$) and half saturation concentration ($K_u$) of Lake Paldang phytoplankton ranged from 0.8${\sim}$1.1$day^1$ and from 0.1${\sim}$O.8${\mu}M$, respectively. $K_u$ was highest during May ($0.8{\mu}M$) and the lowest during September ($0.1{\mu}M$). Such result may be induced by the phytoplankton cell quota that showed the lowest concentration ($0.13{\mu}gP/{\mu}gChl.$ a) during May. The growth kinetics showed that phytoplankton growth in Lake Paldang was faster during summer and autumn than spring, suggesting that the Potential of algal bloom is high after the summer monsoon season.

  • Concentrative samplings of 35 times on standing crops of phytoplankton and physicochemical factors were conducted at five sites over Seongsu Bridge to Seongsan Bridge in lower parts of the Ban River from January to December 2006. Over the study, all physicochemical factors showed no large differences among the sampling sites except station 2 having high concentrations of BOD, TN, and TP. Heavy rain also cause these concentrations to decrease. The phytoplankton species and abundance (88 taxa and $1{\sim}41$,104 cells $mL^{-1}$) were varied according to the season, and sharply decreased during heavy rains. In particular, cyanobacteria dominated the phytoplankton community during dry seasons, while green algae and diatom dominated during the rainy seasons. However, after the termination of rain, high water temperatures over $20^{\circ}C$ and low N/P ratios $(9.4{\sim}18.9)$ evoked the cyanobacterial bloom. These results indicate that although the heavy rain (huge outflows of Paltang Dam) temporarily diluted the nutrient level and effected the cyanobacterial bloom in the lower parts of the Han River, cyanobacterial abundance was recovered by the high temperature and low N/P ratio as the rainfall discontinued.

  • The seasonal dynamics of phytoplankton and water quality were evaluated bimonthly at 7 park ponds in the capital region from October 2004 to August 2005. With out the change of water temperature $(0.4\sim26.0^{\circ}C)$, cyanobacteria dominated in park ponds such as Gyungbokgung Gyunghyaeru and Seokchon reservoir. The standing crops of phytoplankton was significant related with cell densities of cyanobacteria (r=0.993), while they did not significant correlation with environmental factors. Almost of all park ponds in the capital region were classified as eutrophic state with high TP concentrations and TN/TP ratios less than 10. Major dominant cyanobacteria were as followed; Anabaena sp., Aphanocapsa elachista, Lyngbya contorta, Merismopedia elegans, Microcystis aeruginosa, M. wesenbergii, Microcystis sp., Oscillatoria sp., Phormidium tenue, and Plectonema sp. To date, although the concentration of chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ and cyanobacterial densities in the capital region was below the 'danger' level of WHO guidelines value, the monitoring of cyanobacterial densities and its toxin (microcystin) in recreational/bath water should be continued.

  • Seasonal succession and community composition of planktonic ciliates were studied in Kyungan Stream from December 2000 to December 2001. Oligotrichs accounted for 53% of total ciliates. Total abundance of ciliates peaked in spring (30 March, 6 April) and in summer (8 June, 20 July) reaching values up to $1.9\times10^4$ cells $L^{-1}$. Seasonal succession of dominant species occurred obviously. Large-sized $(>50{\mu}m)$ species (Stylonychia sp1, Phascolodon vorticella and Codonella cratera) dominanted from winter to spring. Small sized $(<30{\mu}m)$ species (Vorticella spp., Rimostrombidium hyalinum and Halteria grandinella) dominanted in summer and autumn. Total abundance of large-sized species coincided with the Chl-${\alpha}$ concencetation during the study (r=0.33, p<0.05, n=39). Among the small-sized species Halteria grandinella was a significant relationship with bacterial abundance (r=0.35, p<0.05, n=39).

  • The aim of this research was to detect and observe delivering generation effects from $F_0$ generation exposed to 4-nonylphenol 4NP) to $F_1$ generation on Tigriopus japonicus. The nauplius survival rate of $F_1$ from $F_0$ exposed to low 4NP concentration was significantly lower than other concentrations. Among the developmental process, copepodite first emergence day (CE) and adult male first emergence day (ME) on $F_1$ were accelerated relatively high concentration conditions. The sex ratio of $F_1$ was different between control group and treatment groups for 1, 10 and $30{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ 4NP. The fecundity of $F_1$ was not significantly affected (except, $0.1{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ 4NP). When 4NP concentrations were increased, first brooding day (FB) of F 1 was generally delayed. The length, width, and biomass of $F_1$ adult female were smaller than control group. In addition, the width and biomass of adult male were narrower or smaller than control group.

  • Pigments were extracted by aqueous acetone from the boiled canned oyster colored during storage and then the components were separated by thin layer chromatography. Totally eleven pigments could be isolated including one yellow, one red, five orange or reddish orange and four green components, and their UV-visible spectra were measured. It can be envisioned from the electronic spectral study and color reaction on the indivisual pigments isolated from the brown acetone extracts that the green pigments as well as most of the yellow orange ones may be porphyrin derivatives originated probably from the chlorophyll and some of the orange pigments contains ketocarotenoids. In particular, the pigment of band 8 which is expected to be pheophytin a or its derivatives and the carotenoid band 7 seem to be the major pigment. The close resemblance of the chromatogram of the colored muscle extract to that of the viscera suggests that the brown coloring material is probably originated from the viscera pigments.

  • Every one experiences death one day, however no one can hows exactly what it is because people can not experience death until it comes, it is therefore impossible to judge correctly on the phenomenon of the death. On the whole, man experiences indirect death through the mass communications such as TV drama, fiction, magazine etc because those methods can easily access by every one. In addition to this, people usually acquire the negative awareness of death through the dramatic change of story like dying of cancer for dramatic effect by giving scare and fear to the cancers. The purpose of this study is to provide basic information on the spiritual care that enables the facing death patients to accept death as a part of life and divert hope from scare about after death by comparing and analyzing of two aspects of death meaning i.e, Korean fiction and the end stage cancer patients. Additionally, for medical staff to understand the facing death cancer patients by making to aware patients correctly and provide the better quality of care. The study was performed from September 28, 2002 to February, 28, 2003. The materials of this study were collected by direct data obtained from observation, interviews, note and diary of end stage of cancer patients and written materials acquired from Korean contemporary fiction. Participants of this study were 4 end stage cancer patients including 2 lung cancer patients, 1 liver cancer patient and 1 esophagus cancer patient.
