This study was carried out to investigate the making method and properties of Hanji(Korean traditional paper) for wallpaper for the purpose of mass production and mass consumption of Hanji. Paper mulberry fiber was longer than wood fiber in length and it had also much extractives and ash in content. Bast fiber was a little damaged in the fibrilation and beating process because it was weak in flexibility and compressive properties. Proper conditions for making two-ply and three-ply Hanji were examined and six kinds of Hanji were made on the basis of the three-ply paper making method. The sample OH(Original Hanji) 2-2 and OH 3-2 among them obtained good results in quality test by appearance from wallpaper makers.
This study was carried out to explore a new application of traditional Hanji and obtain fundamental properties for producing Hanji wallpaper by incorporating ceramics from wood and rice-husk as an interior building material. The results of properties determined were summarized as follows: The addition of ceramics in Hanji paper reduced its apparent density, but increased bulk density due to the ceramic particles distributed on the surface and inside the fiber of Hanji wallpapers. In particular, woodceramic particles were specifically distributed on the fiber surface, while particles of rice-husk ceramics were permeated into the inside surface of fibers. The density of rice-husk ceramics were greater than that of woodceramics. The physical properties of Hanji wallpapers, such as breaking strength, wet breaking strength, burst strength, tear index and folding endurance were deteriorated with the addition of ceramics. However, the addition of woodceramics in the Hanji wallpaper resulted in better strength in most cases than that of rice-husk ceramics, except tear strength. Therefore, an optimum addition level of woodceramics into the wallpaper was found to be 5% on the basis of intensity. The addition of ceramics also prolonged the combustion time because it lowered air permeability and brightness of the wallpaper.
This study was carried out to develop the manufacturing technique of Korean paper(Hanji) and find out new uses of machine-made Hanji produced on a a large scale by paper machine. Six kinds of Hanji were made and laminated with backpaper by acryl-based or vinyl acetate ethylene-based adhesive. Six kinds of wallpapers were made such as WH 1, WH 2-1, WH 2-2, WH 3-1, WH 3-2 and WH 4. Physical properties and quality test on the wallpapers were examined. Physical strength of the wallpapers was better than each strength of the Hanji and backpaper. It might be a roll of adhesive. And so, Production cost of the Hanji could be brought down if the Hanji was made thin to get strength not enough to cut during lamination of two papers(Hanji and backpaper). Hanji wallpapers of WH 3-1 and WH 4 are lower than a standard in sunlight resistance and WH 1 is in properties of opacity. WH 2-1, WH 2-2 and WH 3-2 were better than Korean standard in some quality tests. WH 2-2 and WH 3-2 were superior to other wallpapers as a whole. About, twenty kinds of wallpapers with surface treatment, are now being produced on the basis of these two types of wallpapers.
The sound absorption property, hand feel, air permeability and pore size of 25 kinds of traditional Korean natural wallpapers (Hanji) were measured and analyzed in this study. The sound absorption rate of Hanji became larger with increasing of frequency beginning from 3.2 kHz, reached 2 times in frequency range of nearby 4 kHz. The sound absorption rate of Hanji was increased as the permeability was lowered and the pore size was decreased. The sound absorption property of Hanji wallpaper could be improved by manufacturing process such as super calendering process.

In this study, we used various dyes from natural pigments such as tumeric, goldthread, indigo, pagoda tree flower, sappanwood, and safflower to make the Hanji wallpaper with super eight colors of yellow, orange, green, turquoise, violet, red, blue, and magenta. As a result of measuring the lightfastness, magenta dyed with sappanwood showed the worst effect, but blue dyed with only indigo showed the best effect. In terms of the spot test by water, red wallpaper dyed with safflower showed the clear spot, but blue, turquoise, and green dyed with indigo resulted in a little spot. The orange, violet, and magenta dyed with goldthread and sappanwood showed antibacterial activity, and the turquoise, green, and blue also has a little antibacterial activity. However, yellow and red didn't show the some result as expected. In the experiment for efficiency of formaldehyde removal, all Hanji wallpapers dyed with natural pigments showed the significant removal effect of formaldehyde, especially turquoise and red were the highest.
By taking wallpaper specimens from Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, and Chilgung Palace preserved from the late Joseon Dynasty to the present, we planned in this study to determine the types and characteristics of the paper used as wallpaper in the Joseon royal family. First, we confirmed the features of paper hanging in the palaces with old literature on the wallpaper used by the royal family based on archival research. Second, we conducted a field survey targeting the royal palaces whose construction period was relatively clear, and analyzed the first layer of wallpaper directly attached to the wall structure after sampling the specimens. Therefore, we confirmed that the main raw material was hanji, which was used as a wallpaper by the royal family, and grasped the types of substances(dyes and pigments) used to produce a blue color in spaces that must have formality by analyzing the blue-colored paper. Based on the results confirmed through the analysis, we checked documents and the existing wallpaper by comparing the old literature related to wallpaper records of the Joseon Dynasty palaces. We also built a database for the restoration of cultural properties when conserving the wallpaper in the royal palaces. We examined the changes in wallpaper types by century and the content according to the place of use by extracting wallpaper-related contents recorded in 36 cases of Uigwe from the 17th to 20th centuries. As a result, it was found that the names used for document paper and wallpaper were not different, thus document paper and wallpaper were used without distinction during the Joseon Dynasty. And though there are differences in the types of wallpaper depending on the period, it was confirmed that the foundation of wallpaper continued until the late Joseon Dynasty, with Baekji(white hanji), Hubaekji(thick white paper), jeojuji(common hanji used to write documents), chojuji(hanji used as a draft for writing documents) and Gakjang(a wide and thick hanji used as a pad). As a result of fiber identification by the morphological characteristics of fibers and the normal color reaction(KS M ISO 9184-4: Graph "C" staining test) for the first layer of paper directly attached to the palace wall, the main materials of hanji used by the royal family were confirmed and the raw materials used to make hanii in buildings of palaces based on the construction period were determined. Also, as a result of analyzing the coloring materials of the blue decorative paper with an optical microscope, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopic analysis(UV-Vis), and X-ray diffraction analysis(XRD), we determined that the type of blue decorative paper dyes and pigments used in the palaces must have formality and identified that the raw materials used to produce the blue color were natural indigo, lazurite and cobalt blue.

The purpose of this study is to reevaluate the performance of Hanji as an architectural material. Hanji has good things in controlling indoor space comfortably. Particularly, ability of controlling humidity of Hanji affects indoor space comfort and human health. The major focuses of this experimental research are (1) how much of water vapor passes through Hanji, (2) how much of water vapor is absorbed into Hanji. In the first case, indoor humidity is higher than outdoor humidity. In this case, approximately 38 g of water vapor passes through Hanji 1, genarally utilized in window paper (Changhoji), per square meter in one hour. And approximately 4 g of water vapor is absorbed into Hanji 2, genarally utilized in wallpaper, per square meter. In the second case, outdoor humidity is higher than indoor humidity. In this case, Hanji passes water vapor to inner space at first, but when indoor relative humidity reach approximately 66%, although outdoor humidity is higher than indoor humidity, water vapor doesn't pass through Hanji. If Hanji is utilized in window material and wallpaper, indoor space is maintained comfortably without mechanical devices in humidity control.

This study was carried out to develop a new application field of traditional Hanji and obtain the basic data for producing functional Hanji using sawdust ceramics and rice-husk ceramics as an architectural material. The results measuring water vapor permeance and water vapor absorption for using window materials and wallpapers are as follows. Hanji wallpaper has good things in controlling indoor space comfortably. Particularly, ability of controlling humidity of Hanji wallpaper affects indoor space comfort and human health. In the case indoor humidity is higher than outdoor humidity, according to the addition of ceramics, Hanji wallpapers maintain the humidity by retaining water vapor molecules in the pores of ceramics. Thus the Hanji wallpapers with ceramics, in particular rice-husk ceramics, make it superior to non-ceramics Hanji wallpapers in maintaining the humidity indoors.
