  • The writing brush, ink stick, paper, and ink stone were the four precious things of the studying and recording in oriental world until even nowaday. The oriental paper was comparatively well evaluated in many papers and reviews, but it is difficult to find some scientific reports or reviews about the ink stick. In this paper, the scientific aspect of ink sticks of oriental maine three country(Korea, China, Japan) were evaluated by the physical, chemical and microscopic analysis. The result could summarized as fellows; 1. The Korean lampblack ink stick contains more carbon and less nitrogen and the Chinese ink sticks contain less carbon and more oxygen. 2. The Korean lampblack and cowhide glue contain relatively higher amount of sulphur. 3. The particle size distribution of carbon in the ink stick was not change after grinding in the ink stone. 4. The particle size of carbon and the pore size in the charcoal ink sticks of three country were larger than those of the lampblack ink sticks. 5. The ink solution of the charcoal ink sticks shows high roundness on Hanji while the ink solution of the lampblack ink sticks is spread readily to Hanji surface. 6. The change of whiteness in printing of the ink sticks is notable in thermal treatment.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the functional properties of Changhoji with natural dyeing. This research would provide a basic information for interior material Changhoji. To estimate functional properties of super eight colors Changhoji, water staining, lightfastness, and floodlight color test were executed. In term of the water staining test, blue color showed the clear and other colors showed the little spot. As a result of measuring the lightfastness, Magenta color dyed with sappanwood showed the worst. But blue color dyed with indigo and Turquoise color dyed with indigo and Pagoda tree flower showed the highest. As a result of floodlight color test was no difference between sample color and floodlight color.

  • The hydrolysis of old book(Hanji) was performed using endoglucanase Ⅰ(endo Ⅰ), and exoglucanase II(exe II) and their mixtures purified from Trichoderma viride cellulase. The optimum degradation of old book(Hanji) with endo Ⅰ, exo II and endo-exo mixture(Ⅰ:Ⅰ) were exhibited at pH 4.5, 5.5, 5.0, respectively. Maximum degradations using endo Ⅰ, exo II and endo-exo mixture(Ⅰ:Ⅰ) occurred at 50$\^{C}$. The yield decreased an increasing the enzyme concentration. Especially, the yield was lowest for treatment with the endo Ⅰ-exo II mixture(Ⅰ:Ⅰ), which may be regarded as being due to a synergistic action of the cellulase components. Physical strength increased with increasing exo II concentration, and decreased with increasing concentration of endoglucanase Ⅰ. These results indicated that the degradation of old book(Hanji) depends largely upon the action of endoglucanase. Therefore, the most effective method of conserving paper cultural properties is to repress the action of endoglucanase.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate actual condition of the modern adaptation of interior elements (wall floor ceiling door & window) in traditional house. The examined objects were 316 pictures of residential interior spaces from the 5 different monthly magazines between Jan. 1993 to Dec. 1997 The results of this study were as follows; 1. Mostly they were either parital adaptation from the original or partially transformed adaptation rather than entire adaptation of the original 2. Of the traditional interior elements adapted in residential space only specific elements were being adapted. For example. partial adaptation from the original were oiled paper flooring(Jangpan) rice papered wall (Hanji) a ceiling finish that left the rafters and beams exposed (Yondunt-chonjang) and window or door frame which is vertical lattices accented with horizontal lattices grouped into three sections(Ttisal-mun)And partially transformed adaptation were wood flooring(Chang-maru) rice apered wall(Hanji) Yondung-chonjang wind or door frame of Wan character(Wanja-mum) 3. In regard to space the mostly adapted spaces were bedrooms rather than living or dining rooms.

  • Three Korean Broussonetia species (Moraceae) were reexamined based on morphological characters. The plants which has been used for making traditional paper Hanji in Korea are considered hybrid species between B. kazinoki and B. papyrifera, its natural habitat was firstly discovered in Is. Gageo (Jeonnam Province). Thus it is newly described as B. ${\times}$ hanjiana M. Kim. Its Korean name is changed into Daknamu instead of Kkujidaknamu. Therefore, Korean name for B. kazinoki is also changed into Aegidaknamu instead of Daknamu. Dioecious plants of Broussonetia kazinoki which were found in Is. Gageo are named as B. kazinoki for. koreana M. Kim (Gageo-Aegidaknamu).

  • This study was carried out to manufacture microcapsules from natural aromatic essential oils by polymeric emulsification and to evaluate their properties using microscopical and electro-chemical analysis techniques. It was shown that aromatic essential oils (yuja, lavender, and peppermint) could be microcapsulated and their emulsion has a good stability and storage characteristics.

  • To satisfy consumers' desire to enjoy their own individuality and cultural trends, the discovery of various materials and the expression of materials embodying their characteristics are increasingly important in the fashion jewelry industry. This study examines, paper mulberry fiber, a raw material of hanji that has been excavated as a new material for fashion jewelry, is durable as wall as, soft and easy to form, has a unique texture along with, excellent aesthetic quality, and expresses various colors, thereby differentiating itself from traditional fashion jewelry materials. The material itself also has symbolic significance as an approach to discovering new sustainable materials for fashion jewelry to ensure increased specificity of the product based on the premise of freedom of expression. The weight and optimal drying time of chicken fiber were derived for the study of fashion jewelry expression using the characteristics of paper mulberry fiber. The techniques of casting, deflection, packing and winding (winding beads with fibers and straps) were derived and four brooches were produced in total. This study is meaningful for the future of, the fashion jewelry industry as it presents the uses of new materials such as paper mulberry fiber to induce multidisciplinary consumption and to suggest a direction for the creation of new value-added products. Further, in order to expand the realm of fashion jewelry industry with our own competitive products that have secured our cultural identity and uniqueness in the global market, there must be continued follow-up research on mass production methods for industrialization.

  • The application of the dispersant is indispensable to the manufacture of Korean traditional paper (Hanji). However the mucilage of which extracted from Abelmoschus manihot root has viscosity drop problem in summertime and synthetic dispersant such as polyacrylamide (PAM) and polyethyleneoxide (PEO) have some problems that under the influence of the quality of. water, cohesion, and bad solubility. This study was carried out not only to develop new natural dispersant that can solve such problems but also to investigate the viscosity and papermaking characteristics of Hydrangea paniculata mucilage. There were no viscosity changes between control and treated mucilage that adjusted to pH 9, heated 6 hours at 40 $^{\circ}C$, and stored heating treatment one for a week at 5 $^{\circ}C$. The treatment of mucilage that adjusted to pH 9 and aged for 120 hours at 4$0^{\circ}C$ resulted in viscosity drop. In the hydrolysis of mucilage, galacturonic acid and glucuronic acid contents were decreased by heating and pH adjusting treatments. Wet web stripping quality and physical properties of Korean traditional paper, which used Hydrangea paniculatamucilage were same or superior to the Abelmoschus manihot root.
