  • Hangul search functionality, including dictionary search is used in many Hangeul applications. Existing research of hangeul search method is the study of using hangeul syllable as a basic unit. However when you consider the characteristics of Hangul, the research of using hangeul character as a basic unit is needed. In this paper we propose the character based hangeul search method using the location-specific frequency information and verify the effectiveness of the proposed method through the experiments.

  • In accordance with development of smart phone, the importance of keypad was increasing, because the smart phone provides a variety of feature like word processor, chatting program, messenger and etc. In this paper, we propose the new Hangeul keypad for smart phones using gestures. And, also we do experiment for performance evaluation of the proposed keypad in this paper. The experiment shows that the proposed keypad is more efficient than other keypads.

  • The use of 'Idumunja' for programs is inevitable before Unicode came out. However, even now that Unicode has been established as an international standard in both name and reality, there has been an insistence that the use of Hangeul identifiers should be avoided. This study surveyed the students for the reasons why they prefer to use English identifiers and for the notations that can substitute the function of English capital letters in using Hangeul identifiers. Then, we discussed the vanity of argument that the use of English identifiers is a global trend, and proposed two notations for the use of Korean identifiers. In order to improve the productivity of software, programmer's job satisfaction, and the ease of maintenance, the use of Hangeul identifiers should become rapidly common.

  • The author studied the process of unifying Hanja variant groups of Korea and China for LGR (Label Generation Rule) of Internet Top-Level Hangeul Hanja Domain and possible confusion between Hangeul syllable and Hanja character. Among 3518 Chinese variant groups, Korea and China need not review variant groups which include no or just one Korean Hanja character. Korea and China reviewed 304 Chinese variant groups (9% of the 3518 Chinese variant groups) which include two or more Korean Hanja characters. By doing so, Korea and China succeeded in efficiently unifying variant groups. Unification process of variant groups which is the main core of Korea-China coordination and almost final unification result is summarized in this paper. In addition, the author analyzed systematically whether some Hanja character could be confused with a Hangeul syllable and obtained a good result which was not expected at the beginning. Probably this kind of systematic analysis has not been performed in the past and seems the first attempt, which is one of the contributions of this paper. The author also reviewed how to express K-LGR in XML for submission to ICANN.

  • This paper describes how to recognize hand written Hangeul character using the stroke order of the elementary segment. The recognition system is constructed of parts : character input part, segment disassembling part, character element extraction part and character recognition part. The character input part reads the character and performs thinning algorithm. In the segment disassembling part, the input character is disassembled into elementary segments using the direction codes and the feature parameters. In the character element extraction part, we extract the character element using the stroke order and the knowledge rule. Finally, we able to recognize the hand written Hangeul characters by assembling the character elements, in the character recognition part.

  • Recently, a name retrieval function is widely used on navigation systems. In this paper, we propose the new dynamic hashing algorithm for a name retrieval function on it. The proposed dynamic hashing algorithm by constructing an index using the variance information of character is the better than existing methods in terms of storage capacity and retrieval speed. The algorithm proposed in this paper can be useful on systems that have limited resources as well as navigation systems.

  • In this paper, We investigate the search patterns that are applied to the character based word search and make the search algorithm. We used to various hangout coded set that are KS X 1001 hangeul coded set and unicode 3.0 for the character based word search algorithm. In each case, We study of efficiency of algorithms that are related to hangeul coded set.

  • This paper proposes an efficient method to recognize Hangeul in video open captions. The open captions in news video can play an important role in the video indexing. The strokes of Korean character have a very strong horizontal and vertical directionality and some strokes appear repeatedly in each character. Based on this characteristics, in this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm to extract the character regions in open caption and recognize the characters based on these characteristics of Korean character. The simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of our algorithm in terms of computation time and recognition accuracy.

  • UCS (=ISO/IEC 10646, =Unicode) will be used widely as globalization. If UCS is used for official purpose in Koreas, UCS solves a Problem in different hangeul code between South and North Korea. But, UCS is not a solution for problems in unequal order with the same character. IS0/1EC 146sl : 2000 (International String Ordering), which is a international standard for string ordering, defines a framework sorting all char-acter strings consisting multi-national scripts. Because the Common Template Table in ISO/IEC 14651 defines orders of characters, we can change orders of characters without changes of characters sequences in programs. Therefore, we can solve a ordering problem without unifying order of hangeul in South and North Korea. Functions related ISO/IEC 14651 are contained by system librarys in unix-based operating system such as Linux, Solaris and FreeBSD. We implement EUC-KR-based North Korean locale, which includes North Korean hangeul order, in Linux in order to use North Korean locale in South Korea. And we develop a program ordering strings with South and North Korean hangout order.
