  • Since various type of wireless/mobile network likes WLAN, WIBRO, HSDPA were come to us, technology providing high quality multimedia service while user move are actively researched such as MIH (Media Independent Handover) proposed by IEEE for interworking between heterogeneous network and CMIP (Client Mobile IP), PMIP (Proxy Mobile IP) for mobility. Despite the technology about interworking and handover between heterogeneous network are actively researched, handover decision method need to be researched. In this paper we suggest a simple and effective handover method for high quality multimedia service in real wireless environment. For this, we use MIH+CMIP platform for target multimedia service to make handover decision rule in WIBRO and HSDPA networks. After apply this rule, we verified effectiveness of handover decision method through real test.

  • In heterogeneous wireless networks supporting multi-access services, selecting the best network from among the possible heterogeneous connections and providing seamless service during handover for a higher Quality of Services (QoSs) is a big challenge. Thus, we need an intelligent vertical handover (VHO) decision using suitable network parameters. In the conventional VHOs, various network parameters (i.e., signal strength, bandwidth, dropping probability, monetary cost of service, and power consumption) have been used to measure network status and select the preferred network. Because of various parameter features defined in each wireless/mobile network, the parameter conversion between different networks is required for a handover decision. Therefore, the handover process is highly complex and the selection of parameters is always an issue. In this paper, we present how to maximize network utilization as more than one target network exists during VHO. Also, we show how network parameters can be imbedded into IEEE 802.21-based signaling procedures to provide seamless connectivity during a handover. The network simulation showed that QoS-effective target network selection could be achieved by choosing the suitable parameters from Layers 1 and 2 in each candidate network.

  • Effective handover decision is important for providing seamless services to mobile users. In this paper, we propose an analysis framework to evaluate the performance of handover decision based on received signal strength (RSS) measurements in terms of the late notification and false alarm probability. In our framework, we consider mobility of a mobile user, signaling delays for exchanging messages related to handover protocols, cell sizes and RSS measurement interval to stabilize RSS reading due to random measurement errors. By quantitatively scrutinizing the impact of each parameter on the late notification and false alarms, we suggest the research directions for effective handover decision mechanism that may provide fast and reliable handover.

  • In cellular mobile communication systems, if the size of a cell is decreasing for economic utilization of frequency resources, frequent handovers may be requested because the time a mobile stays in a cell is decreasing. In general the measured parameters to decide handover including RSSI, BER, and the distance between mobile station and base station, are usually incorrect and handover decision using single parameter insufficient. Therefore, the better handover algorithm should take over the problems of this uncertain measurements, and make the decision more robust and flexible by the consideration of all those decision parameters at the same time. We propose a novel handover algorithm based the multicriteria decision making, in which those parameters are participated in the decision process using aggregation function in fuzzy set theory. As a simulation results, the overall decision making is more reliable and flexible than the conventional method using only one parameter, RSSI in terms of call force ratio, and handover request ratio.

  • Today, as the hierarchical cellular system is getting more attention than before, some recent studies introduce delay based admission control (AC) scheme which delays the admission to the macro-embedded small cell for a relatively short time to prevent unnecessary handover caused by the short-term visitors of the small cell area. In such delay based ACs, when we use improper delay parameter, the system frequently makes incorrect handover decisions such as where unnecessary handover is allowed due to too short delaying, or where necessary handover is denied due to too long delaying. In order to avoid these undesirable situations as much as possible, we develop a new delay parameter decision method based on probabilistic cell residence time approximations. By the extensive numerical and analytical evaluations, we determine the proper delay parameter which prevents the incorrect handover decision as much as possible. We expect our delay parameter decision method can be useful system administration tips in hierarchical cellular system where delay based AC is adopted.

  • The SCTP (Stream Control Transmission Protocol) implementation with the DAR (Dynamic Address Reconfiguration) extension is called the mSCTP (Mobile SCTP) that is proposed recently for mobility support in transport layer. The mSCTP does not satisfy short handover latency for real-time applications and it has no specific handover decision mechanisms. In this paper, we propose fast handover schemes for mobile nodes that are moving into different subnet using pre-acquisition RA (Router Advertisement) and L3 trigger for improving handover performance. Furthermore, we introduce three specific methods which are RA cache, FMIPv6 (Fast Handovers for Mobile IPv6) and dual interface and how proposed scheme can be interoperated with handover process respectively. Finally, we show two experimental results which are the mSCTP and the mSCTP using FMIPv6 on Linux platforms. Experimental results show that handover performance is improved with reducing the time of receiving RA which takes most of total handover latency.

  • It is widely accepted that the coverage with high user densities can only be achieved with small cell such as micro- and pico-cell. The smaller cell size causes frequent handovers between cells and a decrease in the permissible handover Processing delay. This may result in the handover failure. in addition to the loss of some Packets during the handover. In these cases. re-transmission is needed in order to compensate errors, which triggers a rapid degradation of throughput. In this paper, we propose a new handover scheme in the next generation mobile communication systems, in which the handover setup process is done in advance before a handover request by predicting the handover cell based on mobile terminal's current position and moving direction. Simulation is focused on the handover failure rate and Packet loss rate. The simulation results show that our proposed method provides a better performance than the conventional method.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel inter-cell handover approach from a new perspective in dense Heterogeneous and Small Cell Networks (HetSNets). We first devise a cell selection mechanism to choose a proper candidate small cell for the UEs that tend to implement inter-small cell handover (ICH). By exploiting the property of a typical non-concentric circle, i.e., circle of Apollonius, we then propose a novel analytical method for modeling inter-cell handover regions and present mathematical derivation to prove that the inter-small cell handover issues fit the property of the circle of Apollonius. We design an inter-cell handover algorithm (ICHA) by means of our proposed handover model to dynamically configure hysteresis margin and properly implement handover decision in terms of UE's mobility. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed ICHA yields lower call drop rate and radio link failure rate than the conventional methods and hence achieve high Handover Performance Indicator (HPI).

  • This paper introduces the mobility-adaptive QoE provisioning solution. The key is placed on the intelligent selection of access network depending on the QoE criteria classified by the user mobility and the bandwidth demand for service. We further focus on the network-based smart handover scheme using the mobility-adaptive handover decision and the enhanced MIH-FMIP framework. The concept is the network-based calm service and the balance in order to facilitate vertical and seamless handover. In result, it is figured out that our solution improves QoE performance by selecting appropriate access network, repressing handover occurrence, and reducing handover delay as well.

  • Handover is constantly a challenging issue in wireless networks. Most of the existing solutions are host-based, which are implemented on the wireless terminals and leave the decision making to the terminals. This paper studies the problem of network-based handover in the wireless networks with the constraints of low latency as well as low computational time. To address this problem, we employ the software-defined network (SDN) architecture to facilitate handover. According to the operational model of the SDN, we define a workflow for all involved network entities, and then design a framework implementing the workflow as a complete handover system. The proposed framework aims to establish a channel conveying the mobility-related information of devices and the context information of their vicinity from the switches/access routers to the controllers. Based on collected information, the controller can optimally execute the handover.
