  • At the early design stage, a designer would develop a design through reviewing various alternatives. However, the limitation of human information handling capacity restricts what makes various alternatives. A way to overcome the limitation is to create the alternatives with computer power and the generative design concept with computer has been used. For the generative design, even if a great deal of methodologies has been presented, the core of methodologies would be the process of shapes which examine interrelationship among shapes and how shape can be changed with the interrelationship. The interrelationship can be represented as rules. To represent the rule, the shape grammar is suggested by Stiny in 1972 with the article of "Shape Grammars and the Generative Specification of Painting and Sculpture". The aim of this paper is to present a way of using generative design based on shape grammar for generating alternatives in 3D manner.

  • Facilities are getting more automated and informative in modern manufacturing systems, especially in semiconductor and LCD plants. These systems keep a great deal of such information on its current and near-future status as the arrival time and job completion time of their parts. This paper presents an efficient policy for AGV and part routing using information on the future status of the system where AGVs are playing a central role for material handling. Efficient control of AGVs is very important because AGV systems often become the bottleneck and limit the total production capacity of a very expensive plant. The cell controller records the future events chronologically in Next Event Schedule, and uses this list to determine to which place the AGVs and parts to be sent.

  • The design of the container stacking yard influences significantly the productivity of handling operations in port container terminals. This study proposes methods for determining specifications of the yard considering the travel distance of vehicles and the storage capacity of yards. For a given length and width of a yard, it is discussed how to determine the layout and the dimension of yard blocks. The alternatives of the yard layout are evaluated by using a simulation study.

  • A robust economic dispatch algorithm involving transmission losses is proposed and investigated for a possibility of on-line applications. In this paper, the penalty factors are calculated directly from transposed Jacobian of load flow analysis with advantages of superiority to B-coefficients method based on its computation time and suitability for real time application since the approach is based on a current system condition. The proposed algorithm is systematically handling the generation capacity constraints with transmission losses. Implementation of the algorithm for IEEE systems and EPRI Scenario systems shows that computation time is enough to apply on-line economic dispatch to large power system and production cost is saved compared with the crude classical economic dispatch algorithm without considering transmission losses.

  • The design of LAI(Local Area Identifier), the first paging area for searching the mobile terminal has a close relation with the performance of paging channel in CDMA cellular network. This paper discusses the performance of the forward channel of IS-95 CDMA standard, known as the paging through the related messages such as call control message, channel assignment message. Modeling and simulation work were conducted to quantify the performance of paging channel in terms of traffic handling capacity and blocking levels. This result serves as illustrative guidelines for the proper engineering of common control channel, which has a major impact on the overall performance of cellular network.

  • In recent literature on traffic scheduling, the combination of the two-dimensional discrete-time Markov chain (DTMC) and the Markov modulated Poisson process (MMPP) is used to analyze the capacity of VoIP traffic in the cognitive radio system. The performance of the cognitive radio system solely depends on the accuracy of spectrum sensing techniques, the minimization of false alarms, and the scheduling of traffic channels. In this paper, we only emphasize the scheduling of traffic channels (i.e., traffic handling techniques for the primary user [PU] and the secondary user [SU]). We consider the following three different traffic models: the cross-layer analytical model, M/G/1(m) traffic, and the IEEE 802.16e/m scheduling approach to evaluate the performance of the VoIP services of the cognitive radio system from the context of blocking probability and throughput.

  • The efficiency of port operations is an important indicator of port development. Moreover, there is excess handling capacity in Chinese ports, which results in a slower speed of development. Under the detrimental environment of the international shipping market, it is necessary to improve the operation efficiency of ports for long-term development. This paper provides an assessment of the competitiveness of Chinese seaport companies using the Boston Consulting Group's matrix, and efficiency measurements using a data envelopment analysis and the Malmquist method. This analysis showed that highly efficient companies reformed their development strategies, which should be a solution considered by less efficient companies, such as Shenzhen Yan Tian Port Holdings Co., Ltd.. Although, having high throughput should be reformed in the investment structure. This research will assist port companies in gaining effective operating experience, and governments in establishing strategic planning to enhance the efficiency of port development.

  • Allomatrix (Wright Medical Tech, Inc., USA), is a newly designed, injectable putty with a reliable demineralized bone matrix(DBM), derived from human bone. The compound contains 86% DBM and other bone growth factors such as bone morphogenic protein (BMP)-2, BMP-4, insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1, and transforming growth factor (TGF)-${\beta}1$. It has excellent os-teoinduction abilities. In addition, DBM is known to have osteoconduction capacity as a scaffold due to its collagen matrix. This product contains a powder, which is a mix of DBM and surgical grade calcium sulfate as a carrier. A practitioner can blend the powder with calcium sulfate solution, making a putty-type material which has the advantages of ease of handling, better fixation, and no need for a membrane, because it can function as membrane itself. This study reports the clinical and radiographic results of various guided bone regeneration cases using Allomatrix, demonstrating its strong potential as a graft material.

  • Inchon Port is the second largest import-export port of Korea, and has the point at issue such as the excessive logistics cost because of the limits of handling capacity and the chronic demurrage. The purpose of this paper is to develop the simulation program as a long-term strategic support tool, considering the dual dock system and the TOC(Terminal Operation Company) system executed since March, 1997 in Inchon Port. The basic input parameters such as arrival intervals, cargo tons, service rates are analyzed and the probability density functions for these parameters are estimated. From the simulation model, it is possible to estimate the demurrage status through analyzing various scenarios and to establish the long-term port strategic plan.

  • A 4-bundle shift refuelling method of CANDU6 F/H (Fuel Handling) System is analyzed to assess the operational flexibility and capacity of F/H system. The current 8-bundle shift refuelling scheme requires to refuel eight fuel bundles from a single fuel channel, and to refuel 14 fuel channels in a week on average assuming that the reactor is in a steady state. The analysis showed that the 4-bundle shift refuelling method increases F/M (Fuelling Machine) duty cycle and operator load. However, the fuellin’g method change from the 8- to 4-bundle shift refuelling ill not require additional team of operators. A marginal increase in the maintenance cost may be resulted in by the change of fuelling method and the increase of fatigue usage factors requires some components to be replaced during the FM lifetime.
