ARM Multimedia data retrieval in low power mobile disk drive (저전력 모바일 드라이브에서의 멀티미디어 데이터 재생)

  • In this work, we present the novel scheduling algorithm of the multimedia data retrieval for the mobile disk drive. Our algorithm is focused on minimizing the power consumption involved in data retrieval from the local disk drive. The prime commodity in mobile devices is the electricity. Strict restriction on power consumption requirement of the mobile device put unique demand in designing of its hardware and software components. State of the art disk based storage subsystem becomes small enough to be embedded in handhold devices. It delivers abundant storage capacity and portability. However, it is never be trivial to integrate small hard disk or optical disk drive in handhold devices due to its excessive power consumption. Our algorithm ARM in this article generates the optimal schedule of retrieving data blocks from the mobile disk drive while guaranteeing continuous playback of multimedia data.

Efficient Stream Sequence Matching Algorithms for Handheld Devices over Time-Series Stream Data (시계열 스트림 데이터 상에서 핸드헬드 디바이스를 위한 효율적인 스트림 시퀀스 매칭 알고리즘)

  • For the handhold devices, minimizing repetitive CPU operations such as multiplications is a major factor for their performances. In this paper, we propose efficient algorithms for finding similar sequences from streaming time-series data such as stock prices, network traffic data, and sensor network data. First, we formally define the problem of similar subsequence matching from streaming time-series data, which is called the stream sequence matching in this paper. Second, based on the window construction mechanism adopted by the previous subsequence matching algorithms, we present an efficient window-based approach that minimizes CPU operations required for stream sequence matching. Third, we propose a notion of window MBR and present two stream sequence matching algorithms based on the notion. Fourth, we formally prove correctness of the proposed algorithms. Finally, through a series of analyses and experiments, we show that our algorithms significantly outperform the naive algorithm. We believe that our window-based algorithms are excellent choices for embedded stream sequence matching in handhold devices.

  • In this paper, we implement and construct a kernel on handhold systems. The goal of this project is to develop issues related to the development of small devices: embedded kernel, power management, user interface issues, networking, and the development of applications for small devices. We explain basic system configuration, kernel activity, device drivers and developing environment in this paper. We also explain detail scheduler activity.

An Effective Pre-refresh Mechanism for Mobile Handhold Device′s Embedded Web Browser

  • Mobile handhold devices such as PDA(Personal Digital Assistant) and Cellular Phone are more and more popular for personal web surfing. But today, most mobile handheld devices have relatively poor web browsing capability because of the small bandwidth of wireless connection, the small speed of CPU, the small capacity of RAM and Flash ROM, the small display size of LCD and the short lifecycle of battery. Users have to endure bigger communication latency than Desk PC's one because of these factors. In this paper, we propose an effective pre-refresh mechanism for handheld device's embedded web browser so as to make user's web surfing faster. The experiment was done using the simulator designed by ourselves and the experiment result demonstrates the proposed mechanism has a good performance to make web surfing faster.

  • DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting for Handhold) is a new standard, currently being developed, which defines mobile enhancements for the DVB-T (DVB-Terrestrial) standard. For the reception of service via mobile handhold devices, seamless mobility and power saving are essential requirements of DVB-H. For seamless handover, the receiver should monitor neighboring cells and it increases the power consumption. And so, power efficient handover scheme to support both mobility and power saving is required. In this paper, we propose cell searching scheme to reduce power consumption by reducing the number of frequency scanning during the handover. Through the numerical evaluation, we analyzethe performance of handover schemes.

  • In this paper, we present a pilot system that tn compress a Korean sentence automatically using knowledge extracted from news articles and their headlines. A sot of compressed sentences can be presented as an abstraction of a document. As a compressed sentence is of headline-style, it could be easily displayed on small devices, such as mobile phones and other handhold devices. Our compressing system has shown to be promising through a preliminary experiment.

  • The increased availability of portable, low-cost, high resolution video devices has resulted in a rapid growth of the applications for video sequences. These video devices can be mounted in handhold unit, mobile unit and airborne platforms like maned or unmaned helicopter, plane, airship, etc. A core technique in use of video sequences is to align neighborhood video frames to each other or to reference images. For video sequences registration, we extracted interested points from aerial video sequences using Harris, $F{\square}rstner$, and KLT operators and implemented image matching using these points. As the result, we analysed image matching results for each operators and evaluated accuracy of aerial video registration.

  • With the rapid development of wired or wireless Internet, various kinds of resource constrained mobile devices, such as cellular phone, PDA, homepad, smart phone, handhold PC, and so on, have been emerging into personal or commercial usages. Most software to be embedded into those devices has been forced to have the characteristic of flexibility rather than the fixedness which was an inherent property of embedded system. It means that recent technologies require the flexible embedding into the variety of resource constrained mobile devices. A document processor for XML which has been positioned as a standard mark-up language for information representation on the Web, is one of the essential software to be embedded into those devices for browsing the information. In this paper, a framework for configurable XML processor called EmXJ is designed and implemented for flexible embedding into various types of resource constrained mobile devices, and its advantages are compared to conventional XML processors.
