Hand gestures are attracting attention as a NUI (Natural User Interface) of wearable devices such as smart glasses. Recently, to support efficient media consumption in IoT (Internet of Things) and wearable environments, the standardization of IoMT (Internet of Media Things) is in the progress in MPEG. In IoMT, it is assumed that hand gesture detection and recognition are performed on a separate device, and thus provides an interoperable interface between these modules. Meanwhile, deep learning based hand gesture recognition techniques have been recently actively studied to improve the recognition performance. In this paper, we propose a method of hand gesture recognition based on CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) for various applications such as media consumption in wearable devices which is one of the use cases of IoMT. The proposed method detects hand contour from stereo images acquisitioned by smart glasses using depth information and color information, constructs data sets to learn CNN, and then recognizes gestures from input hand contour images. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves the average 95% hand gesture recognition rate.

To effectively use these functions many kinds of human-phone interface are used such as touch, voice, and gesture. However, the most important touch interface cannot be used in case of hand disabled person or busy both hands. Although eye tracking is a superb human-computer interface method, it has not been applied to smartphones because of the small screen size, the frequently changing geometric position between the user's face and phone screen, and the low resolution of the frontal cameras. In this paper, a new eye tracking method is proposed to act as a smartphone user interface. To maximize eye image resolution, a zoom lens and three infrared LEDs are adopted. Our proposed method has following novelties. Firstly, appropriate camera specification and image resolution are analyzed in order to smartphone based gaze tracking method. Secondly, facial movement is allowable in case of one eye region is included in image. Thirdly, the proposed method can be operated in case of both landscape and portrait screen modes. Fourthly, only two LED reflective positions are used in order to calculate gaze position on the basis of 2D geometric relation between reflective rectangle and screen. Fifthly, a prototype mock-up design module is made in order to confirm feasibility for applying to actual smart-phone. Experimental results showed that the gaze estimation error was about 31 pixels at a screen resolution of $480{\times}800$ and the average hit ratio of a $5{\times}4$ icon grid was 94.6%.

Communication occurs through verbal elements, which usually involve language, as well as non-verbal elements such as facial expressions, eye contact, and gestures. In particular, among these non-verbal elements, gestures are symbolic representations of physical, vocal, and emotional behaviors. This means that gestures can be signals toward a target or expressions of internal psychological processes, rather than simply movements of the body or hands. Moreover, gestures with such properties have been the focus of much research for a new interface in the NUI/NUX field. In this paper, we propose a method for recognizing the number of fingers and detecting the hand region based on the depth information and geometric features of the hand for application to an NUI/NUX. The hand region is detected by using depth information provided by the Kinect system, and the number of fingers is identified by comparing the distance between the contour and the center of the hand region. The contour is detected using the Suzuki85 algorithm, and the number of fingers is calculated by detecting the finger tips in a location at the maximum distance to compare the distances between three consecutive dots in the contour and the center point of the hand. The average recognition rate for the number of fingers is 98.6%, and the execution time is 0.065 ms for the algorithm used in the proposed method. Although this method is fast and its complexity is low, it shows a higher recognition rate and faster recognition speed than other methods. As an application example of the proposed method, this paper explains a Secret Door that recognizes a password by recognizing the number of fingers held up by a user.
This paper presents a tool that automatically generates mobile web applications from user interface (UI) models which are based on PELUM (Pattern and Event based Logical User Interface Modeling). PELUM is a method for the effective development of UI-centered embedded systems via UI modeling. The proposed tool consists of a model editor and a code generator. The former provides an environment for modeling a Logical UI Model (LUM) and a Programming Interface Model (PIM) on the web. On the other hand, the code generator sets the screen configuration and events' behavior, according to the LUM, synthesizing a local database schema according to the PIM, and then generates an executable mobile web app. It also can produce mashup web apps by receiving an open API address via the PIM. The generated mobile web apps follow the Model-View-Controller (MVC) architecture in order for users to easily customize them. The proposed tool enables them to generate mobile web apps that can be executed on various devices by modeling logical UIs on the web.
This paper presents a hand motion tracking method for hand gesture interface using a camera in mobile devices such as a smart phone and PDA. When a camera moves according to the hand gesture of the user, global optical flows are generated. Therefore, robust hand movement estimation is possible by considering dominant optical flow based on histogram analysis of the motion direction. A continuous hand gesture is segmented into unit gestures by motion state estimation using motion phase, which is determined by velocity and acceleration of the estimated hand motion. Feature vectors are extracted during movement states and hand gestures are recognized at the end state of each gesture. Support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighborhood classifier, and normal Bayes classifier are used for classification. SVM shows 82% recognition rate for 14 hand gestures.

Recently, the issue has been tangible game environment due to the various interactive interface developments. In this paper, we propose the multi card touch based interactive arcade system by using marker recognition interface and multi-touch interaction interface. For our system, the card's location and orientation information is recognized through DI-based recognition algorithm. In addition, the user's hand gesture tracking informations are provided by the various interaction metaphors. The system provides the user with a higher engagement offers a new experience. Therefore, our system will be used in the tangible arcade game machine.
In this paper, we present a real-time hand pose recognition method to provide an intuitive user interface through hand poses or movements without a keyboard and a mouse. For this, the areas of right and left hands are segmented from the depth camera image, and noise removal is performed. Then, the rotation angle and the centroid point of each hand area are calculated. Subsequently, a circle is expanded at regular intervals from a centroid point of the hand to detect joint points and end points of the finger by obtaining the midway points of the hand boundary crossing. Lastly, the matching between the hand information calculated previously and the hand model of previous frame is performed, and the hand model is recognized to update the hand model for the next frame. This method enables users to predict the hidden fingers through the hand model information of the previous frame using temporal coherence in consecutive frames. As a result of the experiment on various hand poses with the hidden fingers using both hands, the accuracy showed over 95% and the performance indicated over 32 fps. The proposed method can be used as a contactless input interface in presentation, advertisement, education, and game applications.
Recent advancements in optics technology enable us to realize fast scans of hands using two-dimensional (2D) image scanners. In this paper, we propose an automatic hand measurement system using 2D image scanners for customized glove production. To develop the automatic hand measurement system, firstly hand scanning devices has been constructed. The devices are designed to block external lights and have user interface to guide hand posture during scanning. After hands are scanned, hand contour is extracted using binary image processing, noise elimination and outline tracing. And then, 19 hand landmarks are automatically detected using an automatic hand landmark detection algorithm based on geometric feature analysis. Then, automatic hand measurement program is executed based on the automatically extracted landmarks and measurement algorithms. The automatic hand measurement algorithms have been developed for 18 hand measurements required for custom-made glove pattern making. The program has been coded using the C++ programming language. We have implemented experiments to demonstrate the validity of the system using 11 subjects (8 males, 3 females) by comparing automatic 2D scan measurements with manual measurements. The result shows that the automatic 2D scan measurements are acceptable in the customized glove making industry. Our evaluation results confirm its effectiveness and robustness.
In this paper, we propose a control method of virtual hand by the recognition of a user's hand in the virtual reality game environment. We display virtual hand on the game screen after getting the information of the user's hand movement and the direction thru input images by camera. We can utilize the movement of a user's hand as an input interface for virtual hand to select and move the object. As a hand recognition method based on the vision technology, the proposed method transforms input image from RGB color space to HSV color space, then segments the hand area using double threshold of H, S value and connected component analysis. Next, The center of gravity of the hand area can be calculated by 0 and 1 moment implementation of the segmented area. Since the center of gravity is positioned onto the center of the hand, the further apart pixels from the center of the gravity among the pixels in the segmented image can be recognized as fingertips. Finally, the axis of the hand is obtained as the vector of the center of gravity and the fingertips. In order to increase recognition stability and performance the method using a history buffer and a bounding box is also shown. The experiments on various input images show that our hand recognition method provides high level of accuracy and relatively fast stable results.

In this paper, we propose a novel motion recognition platform using smart-phone tracking and color communication. The interface requires only a camera and a personal smart-phone to provide a motion control interface rather than expensive equipment. The platform recognizes the user's gestures by the tracking 3D distance and the rotation angle of the smart-phone, which acts essentially as a motion controller in the user's hand. Also, a color coded communication method using RGB color combinations is included within the interface. Users can conveniently send or receive any text data through this function, and the data can be transferred continuously even while the user is performing gestures. We present the result that implementation of viable contents based on the proposed motion recognition platform.
