  • A light-weight enough to be portable yet functionally complete hand-writing machine was designed with hardware assembled and software implemented. The machine simulating human hand-writing not only allows identical massive scriptings on papers in human's proxy, but also offers emotional appearance as if the script was directly hand-written in ink. The features of human writing were independently put together to complete the action of scripting. The writing style could be altered in order to mimic a person's own specific writing style. The present work demonstrates that the assembled hand-writing machine was able to duplicate writing of scripts in almost parallel lines in consistent manner. The machine can be used in the emotional marketing area where seasonal greetings or thank-you cards are to be sent in massive manner. The pen-holding machine can also find an emotional application such as writing a short greeting note on a plastic lid on a disposable coffee cup in coffee-selling stores.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to provide the material about the treatment effect of hand function training and writing training being performed as a part of treatment to improve the function of the non-dominant hand of the patients whose dominant hand is damaged and thus need to improve their non-dominant hand's function. Method : During one month of November, 2013, this study randomly chose five study subjects for hand function training, five for writing training, and ten of control group from 20 normal male and female adults going to K Univ. in Busan. All study subjects fully understood all of the training course, agreed to take the test in this study, and volunteered to participate in the test. Each training was performed five times for two weeks, 30 minutes each time. For measurement, Purdue pegboard was used to look into the change of hand dexterity. To investigate an improvement in hand function through hand function training and writing training, this study conducted early evaluation before training, interim evaluation, and final evaluation. Result : First, according to the comparison of dominant hand dexterity by group and by method during a training period, the groups of hand function training and of writing training improved dominant hand dexterity more than the control group. Secondly, according to the comparison of non-dominant hand dexterity by group during a training period, the groups of hand function training and of writing training improved dexterity more than the control group. According to the comparison of non-dominant hand dexterity by method during a training period, there was no big difference in dexterity between the groups of hand function training and of writing training and the control group. But, the group of hand function training showed a further improvement. Thirdly, according to the comparison of both-hand dexterity by group and by method during a training period, the groups of hand function training and of writing training improved both-hand dexterity more than the control group. Fourthly, according to the comparison of both-hand handling ability by group and by method during a training period, the groups of hand function training and of writing training improved both-hand handling ability more than the control group. Conclusion : Given the study result, it is considered that hand function training and writing training help brain damaged patients improve their hand function for their daily activity. And it will be meaningful to research brain damaged patients' motor skills after their brain damage, and the patients who have low abilities of visual perception and cognition. In the future, it will be necessary to secure more study subjects and perform systematic training during a sufficient test period.

  • In future domestic context aware applications the location of mobile devices is often required. Ultrasonic technology enables high resolution indoor position measurements. A disadvantage of state-of-art ultrasonic systems is that several base stations are required to estimate 3D position. This study aims to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of using UPS as a 3D free-hand writing or drawing tool. The processes include the design and testing of UPS as an efficient 3D free-hand writing or drawing tool in the air. The paper will further explain the system architecture of the UPS and how to use GPS as 3D free-hand writing or drawing tool. The efficiency and effectiveness of the system was confirmed by a computer software simulation. The software will further display the result of drawing or writing from the user by graphics. As a result, it is possible to implement UPS as a 3D free-hand writing or drawing tool in the air.

  • Ultrasonic Positioning System (UPS) is an absolute positioning system using ultrasonic waves and has better performance in low price than the other absolute positioning systems. UPS can be further used as pseudo-satellites in the place where GPS is not available. This study aims to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of using UPS as a 3D free-hand writing or drawing tool. The process includes the design and testing of VPS as an efficient 3D free-hand writing or drawing tool in the air. The paper will further explain the system architecture of the UPS and how to use GPS as 3D free-hand writing or drawing tool. The efficiency and effectiveness of the system was confirmed by a computer software simulation. The software will further display the result of drawing or writing from the user by graphics. • When people write a character with a pen stably, proper compliance planning is necessary. In this paper, after investigating the property of character writing task, we propose a fundamental grasp model for character writing and also analyze compliance characteristics for effective character writing using multi-fingered hands. For this, the general stiffness relation of multi-fingered hand is firstly described. Next, we investigate the grasp configurations for grasping a pen and then, we analyze the conditions of the specified stiffness matrix in the operational space to successfully and more effectively achieve the given character writing task. Through the analysis, an effective grasp modeling for successful character writing is shown. And also, we conclude that the operational compliance characteristics should be properly planned for character writing, stably and precisely.

  • Purpose : Primary writing tremor(PWT) can be classified as either type A or type B depending on whether tremor appeared during writing or whilst writing and also on adopting the hand postures normally used for writing. Through the clinical experience author has had an impression that PWT type B may not be purely dependant on specific writing postures. The objective of this study was to clarify whether PWT type B have writing posture-specificity or not. Results : The data indicated that type B PWT is not writing posture-specific. Various pronation and supination postures could evoke tremor as well as writing postures. Furthermore most of other pronation- and supination-related tasks could evoke tremors as well as action of writing. Conclusions : The present data suggest that PWT should be limited only on the pure form of task-spesific PWT type A.

  • This paper examined the role of intermediate texts in the writing process in the context of an EFL composition class. From the tradition of teacher research, this study examined how the Korean college students in different proficiency groups created intermediate texts and used them while composing their own writing. The students produced various types of intermediate texts during the compositing process, which could serve as a basis of their writing. However, the patterns of using these intermediate texts differed widely across the proficiency groups. A writing cycle for the low proficiency group, or "surface reading-few intermediate texts-writing," indicates that less proficient students tended to engage in reading in separation of writing practices and thus produced few intermediate texts through their literacy practices. On the other hand, the students in the higher proficiency groups revealed the more integrated pattern (i.e., purpose reading/intermediate texts/writing), indicating that they often engaged in reading with specific writing purposes, practiced reading in connection to other writing practices, and elaborated written intermediate texts produced. This study argues that, to shift our student writers to a higher level category, we as teachers need to help them engage in reading and writing practices in the way they produce and use intermediate texts appropriate to their specific writing purposes.

  • This study examined a portfolio scale for the assessment of the writing of 295 kindergarten children. The data were analyzed by Spradley's Developmental Research Sequence(DRS), using qualitative methods. Results showed that the writing portfolio scale for 4-year-olds includes "a word or write a children's name" "picture or word with shape of letters" and "scribbling or zig-zag". The writing portfolio scale for 5- and 6-year-olds includes "invented spelling" "write according to sound" and "omitted letters" "write a good hand". The writing portfolio scale for 4-, 5-, and 6-year-olds reflects their writing experience in daily life.
