  • Continuous measurements of ground-level ozone (O3) were made in five minutes intervals in the rural area of Korea from July 1993 to June 1994. This site is located in Chongwon, near latitude 36.4$^{\circ}$N, longitude 127.6$^{\circ}$E. The results show that the one-year mean value was 17 ppb, and monthly mean ranged from 6 to 47 ppb. A pronounced maximum in summer and a minimum in winter were found, and these were related to anthropogenic emission and photochemical reaction. Diurnal variations of ozone minimum at 07:00 - 08:00. During the period when ozone concentration was very high (> 80 ppb), the stable winds were from N and UW; on the other hand, when ozone concentration was very low, air movement in the large scale was from the North Pacific Ocean. This suggests that in the rural area the long range transport of anthropogenic pollutants from distant sources can contribute to the larger contribution than the generation of ozone from local sources in the rural area.

  • In this paper we realized a system, if a user selects the area of the important parts or the arrangement parts when he reads the books or the papers, which amends, stores and readjusts the characters that are included in the selected area by outputting the characters to the word processor in sequence. If a user selects what he wishes lot with his finger, the system detects the movement of the finger by applying the hand recognition algorithm and recognizes the selected area. The system converts the distance of the width and the length of the selected area to the number of the pulse, and controls the motor to move the camera at the position. After the system scales up/down the zoom to be able to recognize the character and controls the focus to the regulated zoom closely, it controls the focus in detail to get more distinct image by using the difference of the light and darkness. We realize the recognition and editing support system of korean language that converts the obtained images to the document by applying the character recognition algorithm and arrange the important parts.

  • A preliminary study of a new pulsatile pump that will work to a frequency greater than 1 Hz, is presented. The fluid-structure interaction between a Newtonian blood flow and a piston drive that moves with periodic speed is simulated. The mechanism is of double effect and has four valves, two at the input flow and two at the output flow; the valves are simulated with specified velocity of closing and reopening. The simulation is made with finite elements software named COMSOL Multiphysics 3.3 to resolve the flow in a preliminary planar configuration. The geometry is 2D to determine areas of high speeds and high shear stresses that can cause hemolysis and platelet aggregation. The opening and closing valves are modelled by solid structure interacting with flow, the rhythmic opening and closing are synchronized with the piston harmonic movement. The boundary conditions at the input and output areas are only normal traction with reference pressure. On the other hand, the fluid structure interactions are manifested due to the non-slip boundary conditions over the piston moving surfaces, moving valve contours and fix pump walls. The non-physiologic frequency pulsatile pump, from the viewpoint of fluid flow analysis, is predicted feasible and with characteristic of low hemolysis and low thrombogenesis, because the stress tension and resident time are smaller than the limit and the vortices are destroyed for the periodic flow.

  • In 1969, Y.J. Yun wrote the terrestrial navigation text book that discussed earth sciences, aides to navigation, chart and publications, tide and tidal current, piloting, rhumb-line sailing, great circle sailing grounded on the hand-on background and theory. It has still been used as a principle text book in a lot of maritime academies and schools. And many contents and definitions came from other terrestrial navigation books published in the United States of America, the United Kingdom, and Japan. But some of them have caused the misunderstanding because they had no enough explanation and explained by incorrect items. In this study, we have found out the problems in the terms course and heading which are related with the direction of the vessel movement, and proposed the amended definitions in order to prevent the misunderstanding and confusion. of them.

  • Automatic water feeding system for chickens is the one of the most important devices at poultry farms. Chickens drink water directly from a water feeder nipple of the automatic water feeder. Check valve inside the water feeder nipple is open when they drink water and is closed otherwise. There are two types of nipples. One is the piston nipple, and the other is the ball nipple. Because the nipple stick in the ball nipple can move freely, the sloping mechanism of the ball nipple works well. but it has complicated mechanism. On the other hand, the piston nipple has very simple structure, but its movement is limited so it can move only up-and-down. To overcome those limitation, the piston nipple with sphere valve seat face (sphere face piston nipple) has been developed and is just distributed at domestic markets. The experimental performance test of the commercialized sphere piston nipple has been conducted, and compared with the performance of the ball nipple and the piston nipple which are domestic products. As the result, sphere piston nipple shows excellent performance compared to that of the piston nipple but its performance is similar to ball type nipple.

  • It has been known that RA, one of major constituents of Perilla frutescens which has been used as a traditional folk remedy for sedation in oriental countries, shows the anxiolytic-like and sedative effects. This study was performed to know whether RA may enhance pentobarbital-induced sleep through ${\gamma}-aminobutyric$ acid $(GABA)_A-ergic$ systems in rodents. RA (0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mg/kg, p.o.) reduced the locomotor activity in mice. RA decreased sleep latency and increased the total sleep time in pentobarbital (42 mg/kg, i.p.)-induced sleeping mice. RA also increased sleeping time and number of falling sleep mice after treatment with sub-hypnotic pentobarbital (28 mg/kg, i.p.). In electroencephalogram (EEG) recording, RA (2.0 mg/kg) not only decreased the counts of sleep/wake cycles and REM sleep, but also increased the total and NREM sleep in rats. The power density of NREM sleep showed the increase in ${\delta}-waves$ and the decrease in ${\alpha}-waves$. On the other hand, RA (0.1, 1.0 and $10{\mu}g/ml$) increased intracellular $Cl^-$ influx in the primary cultured hypothalamic cells of rats. RA (p.o.) increased the protein expression of glutamic acid decarboxylase ($GAD_{65/67}$) and $GABA_A$ receptors subunits except ${\beta}1$ subunit. In conclusion, RA augmented pentobarbital-induced sleeping behaviors through $GABA_A-ergic$ transmission. Thus, it is suggested that RA may be useful for the treatment of insomnia.

  • We have found that the east coast of Korea has had few sea fogs on January, February, November and December for the past 20 years by the analysis of monthly fog frequency and duration time. These phenomena appear to relate to the topographical characteristics of which the Taebaek Mountains descends toward the east to bar the radiation fog. On the other hand, the cause of occurring the spring and summer fog which has 90% of the whole frequency is divided into three cases. The first is the steam fog caused by the advection of the northeast cold air current on the East Sea due to the extension of Okhotsk High. The second is the advection fog caused by cooling and saturation of warm airmass advected on cold sea surface. And the last is the frontal fog caused by the supply of enough vapor due to the movement of low-pressure system and the advection of cold air behind a cold front. While, we simulate the sea fog for the period of the case studies by implementing fog prediction system(DUT-METRI) that makes it possible to forecast the fog in the vertical section of neighborhood of the East Sea and to predict the sea surface wind, relative humidity, ceiling height, visibility etc. Finally we verified this result by satellite image.

  • Measuring the depth of water is very important in ensuring the protection and safety of seaside. There are many difficulties in making the contour bathymetric map, and contour line due to the limitation of continuous measurement of water depth and collimation with the conventional measuring and positioning methods. But the real-time kinematic GPS (RTK GPS) positioning using a carrier phase enables us to decide a precise position without breaking a signal even under the condition of a moving environment. It is also possible to obtain an accurate depth of water in real time with a fathometer through the measuring of time delay between sending and receiving epochs. This research aims at investigation of accuracy potential of RTK GPS in combination with Echo Sounder(E/S) for the coastal mapping. Apart from this purpose, the accuracy of ambiguity resolution with the OTF(On the Fly) method was tested with respect to the initialization time. The result shows that the accuracy is better than 1cm with 5-minute initialization in the distance of 10km baseline. The seaside topography was measured by the RTK GPS only, on the other hand the seafloor topography was surveyed in combination of RTK GPS and E/S. Comparing to the volume of seaside measured by RTK GPS and digital topographical map, the difference of only 2 % was achieved. This indicates that the coastal mapping with RTK GPS is successfully conducted. In addition it is also demonstrated that the 3-dimensional perspective model resulted from the undersea topography measured by RTK GPS and E/S is very close to that from the digital map. Through this study, it was verified that RTK GPS is to be very useful method in the analysis of coastal morphology owing to its capability of getting the precise DTM for the using of harbor reclamation, dredging, and the estimation of soil movement in a river.

  • In this paper, we propose the pointing and correction algorithm for optimized performance based on Bluetooth communication. The error from the accelerometer sensor's output must be carefully managed as the accelerometer sensor is more sensitive to data change compared to that of the gyroscope sensor. Thus, we minimize the noise by applying the Kalman filter to data for each axis from the accelerometer. In addition, we can also obtain effect compensating the hand tremor by applying the Kalman filter to the data variation for x and y. In this study, we extract data through the Quaternion mapping process on data from the accelerometer and gyroscope. In turn, we can obtain a tilt compensation by applying a compensation algorithm with acceleration of the gravity of the extracted data. Moreover, in order to correct the inaccuracy on smart sensor due to the rapid movement of a device, we propose a adaptive pointing and correction algorithm using the genetic approach to generate the initial population depending on the user.

  • In this paper, a small inverted-F antenna with adjustable characteristics is proposed with use of lumped elements, capacitor and resistor. Capacitor is inserted between end of the antenna and ground for size reduction and tuning of resonant frequency. On the other hand, $0{\Omega}$ resistor is replaced as the short line connected to ground. The movement of short point due to use of $0{\Omega}$ resistor results in providing variation of input impedance. Therefore optimum characteristics can be obtained only by proper choice of capacitor and short point without redesign of it's geometry. In order to check the validity, the proposed antenna is designed and fabricated for 2.4 GHz frequency band, and then is applied to a product of Zigbee wireless remote controller. As a result, the size of applied antenna is $8.5{\times}4.5mm^2$ and it is observed that the measured bandwidth and antenna gain are 150 MHz and 2 dBi respectively without redesign of the antenna.
